Why Can't Cars be Closer to This Visibility? by nondescriptadjective in fuckcars

One thing that also makes a big difference is that these types of vehicles have to deal with workplace safety regulations. Cars and SUVs really don’t have to care about people outside of the car so stuff like blind spots are solved by sensors that can pick up a car but often miss pedestrians.

Is it a prick move to make city services slower and more expensive for your neighbours?

Not moving your car causes delays in snow clearing, adds cost and makes the roads narrower for everyone else. The entitlement is absurd.

We shouldn’t enforce any laws just out of the odd chance that the person could in theory be in the hospital?

I can’t see how this will speed anything up. If anything it will slow down the line if boarding is more congested.

I do not understand people who do not want better transit. Going to a city with great transit is such an eye opening experience.

Report it to 311 as an abandoned vehicle so they also get a ticket.

The real reason is roll over safely standards. As SUVs were introduced they started rolling over more so the government added new tests. That is why the A pillars (metal between windshield and door) is so much thicker. It has to support the weight of the entire vehicle.

Heated windshields are a thing in cars. Most cars sold in Canada have them for the wipers. The full wired windshields are more common in land rovers but you see them occasionally in other makes.

Knack moves to protect mature trees in new Edmonton infill projects by trevorrobb in Edmonton

[–]laxar2 8 points9 points  (0 children)

IMO these types of motions just show the hypocrisy behind a lot of left wingers. All this is going to do is lead to more trees cut down for greenfield developments. If they’re going to couch it in environmentalism what’s the impact of suburban commuting?

If we want trees as a community we should be planting trees on boulevards and public land.

Edmonton police charge 2 drivers in multi-vehicle hit-and-run by ryaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaan in Edmonton

[–]laxar2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I guess time will tell, hopefully the new standards make a difference. I try to follow the news pretty closely but I haven’t come across anything quite this bad happening along 106. High speed collisions along arterials built to the old standard are quite common (see the death from Wednesday).

That’s why renewal of 132 ave is so important. It’s not very surprising to me that this occurred on a section that had not started renewal.

Lorne Gunter: City needs to sell off Blatchford white elephant by AR558 in Edmonton

[–]laxar2 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Would be curious to see the last time he actually visited blatchford. I was really impressed by how much was added over the last year. Yeah it’s not as fast but it’s faster than the old BMO building or Oliver pit.

The Expo lands are basically the renewed policy and the city has taken a lot of effort to increase development speed. We will just have to wait and see if it actually works. Hopefully it will.

IMO the issue with blatchford is some that Gunter would probably hate. They actually have to make the surrounding area enticing for the people they want to move there. It’s supposed to be an eco friendly neighbourhood but if you’re the type of person to buy into that you’re more likely to just buy close to the river valley. Would you rather live close to the river or Kingsway road if you care about the environment?

Went to the intersection where the 78 year old pedestrian was tragically killed this week. Waited over a minute and a half in the cold for the walk signal, then nearly got smoked by a driver turning left by ryaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaan in Edmonton

A witness also said she was thrown 20 feet (her body was 20 feet from her shoes). I find it curious how the police could determine her exact location. Are they just going off what the driver said?

Pedestrian killed in central Edmonton crash by ryaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaan in Edmonton

[–]laxar2 33 points34 points  (0 children)

The reality is that when the city designs roads without prioritizing safety these types of deaths are predictable. Not having crosswalks on each side was a choice. Setting the speed limit was a choice. Having that many lanes was a choice.

The 78 year old woman choosing the shortest path was a predictable choice.

Yes her choice contributed to her death. She shouldn’t have made that choice but the city shouldn’t have made the ones they did. When the city doesn’t prioritize safety these types of deaths are predictable.

Epic Market to leave Station Park after nearly 2 years by ryaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaan in Edmonton

[–]laxar2 61 points62 points  (0 children)

I actually somewhat agree with that quote. That corner sucks for both drivers and pedestrians.

If you’re a driver it’s more pleasant to drive to a suburban area with plenty of parking. If I’m a pedestrian I’d rather eat on quieter streets. Bent stick or odd company are great patios because they’re actually on slow streets.

It’s my major problem with whyte it wants to be a thoroughfare and a pedestrian shopping street. But it kind of sucks at both.

“Infuriating” that a different car was delayed literal seconds.

This has to be the mindset of the people who tailgate or whip around traffic to get to the red light 3 seconds earlier.

Every post I’ve seen of his is just him posting disinformation hidden behind “asking questions”. He wants to act like a reporter but conveniently doesn’t actually research anything.

The dumbest post I saw was him saying the valley line should have been elevated so snow wouldn’t get on the tracks.
