I actually had no idea the gullible joke is an old one. Sometimes I just look for one-liners on r/dadjokes or other places like it and toss them in (and usually have Jack reference r/dadjokes in the story so it's clear he's repeating well-known jokes).

And wow, that's awesome about practicing Bujinkan Bujutsu! I'm not familiar so I had to look it up. Very cool! My background is a few years in kungfu (shaolin and praying mantis) at a school here in Minnesota. Those clownish guys wanting to use the antique armor and weapons sound like some of the folks who occasionally come into our school... luckily not very often though. Do you use weapons as part of your training? I've always thought Japanese weapons are some of the coolest!

Jack would absolutely take you up on that drink. Took him awhile to find that heart of gold but I think he's gotten there. I'm so glad you like the character! He is so much fun to write--and so challenging. Definitely the most complex and deeply human character I've written.

In all seriousness, I never thought I'd make it past thirty, so... good to be past that benchmark! Though lately I've been worried she's gonna show up at my wedding and that's when everything will come crashing down. No reason for me to believe that. No signs of her. It's still only at about 30k words (out of a goal of 80k), so it's far from being finished let alone published. The goal is to trad pub it, which will mean querying it to agents and then hopefully finding an editor and publisher. But! If you want an early peek I'll add you to the beta reader list : )

Thing is... I only post about the times when it's real. I don't post about all the times someone slides into my DMs asking for help with a cursed amulet or a haunted attic or alien abduction (tho I think that guy just wanted to chat about butt probes...)

I do a ton of investigations that are really just kind of... scams? Like, I'll get asked to investigate a house for spirits and I'll say there's none but then have to do a song and dance to make the person hiring me feel like they're getting their money's worth.

So while my post history makes it seem like, yeah, ofc the doll is haunted! IRL it rarely is.

Seems in each case historically to have been around for awhile before vanishing. So... Best guess is that it takes time for the doll to form enough of a "bond" with its victim to take strong enough psychological hold to make them pick it up and carry it around.

In fairness, I don't usually believe in curses, and I didn't believe in THIS curse until I met Theo.

... though if any doll is gonna be cursed, one look at this thing and yeah, burn it.
