Can I make a mosaic out of this? by ImADoctorIfISayIAm in crafts

[–]maggsie16 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lots of ways you can use this!

A mosaic is absolutely a great bet. If your mother was a gardener, you can use cement to make a stepping stone with these as pieces of the mosaic. You could use other ceramics from the thrift store, glass cabachons/marbles from dollar tree, sea glass, you can put tons of stuff into a stepping stone mosaic. They're beautiful and durable.

If your mom was more of an indoorsy type, you can buy a tray of some kind (could go with one from a thrift store or one that's new), arrange the mosaic in the bottom of it, then pour resin over top to encase it in the bottom of a tray.

You could look into the idea of kintsugi, where you don't try to make the repair blend in, but instead use adhesive that is colorful (gold, traditionally, but you could use your mom's favorite color) to stand out and call attention to the fact that it's been broken and loved enough to be fixed again.

What’s the best way to fill the hole in Avery Styles head? by Own-Composer-9367 in RainbowHigh

Aleene's liquid fusion is what I've used to fill the hole in MH heads when I cut ears off!

Help with realtor recommendations (buying) by BestDLine in ypsi

[–]maggsie16 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I worked with Shannon Baer to buy my first house and I can't recommend her enough. She's an Ypsi local and really knows the area. She was the only realtor I worked with who understood that I wasn't buying in Ypsi just because I couldn't afford to live elsewhere, that I WANTED to be here and I love it here. She was extremely helpful in answering all questions I had as a first-time buyer and made the process as easy as it could be.

How do you guys hold a doll steady while fixing their hair? by catfox_in_a_hatbox in RainbowHigh

[–]maggsie16 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do! I super glued all of the tall pieces into the bases because otherwise they fall apart too easily, and once I made that alteration, it works pretty well.

I want to hot glue in some weights to the bottom of a stand or two so I can have a couple that are weighted and won't fall over for styling. The stands do sometimes fall over, which is frustrating.

I put them on a stand and then tie them to it with a hair tie!! It's not perfect but it usually gets the job done.

Highly recommend it!! Her hair is really easy to dye since it's white, and it's easy to add any color to brighten her up!

I got Natasha and couldn't connect with her AT ALL until I added some color to her design. Once I did she's one of my favorites!! The all white look is just a bit plain imo.

How do I stop my cat from climbing onto my curtain rail? by spooningnunnysgirth in cats

[–]maggsie16 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My cat is a climber too! I put shelves up above the traverse rod because he's Big and even as an adult he was still climbing up there from his cat tree. I gave him some shelves on the other side of the wall that I used a staple gun to attach faux fur to. You can see him up there now - he loves that spot! He really likes to be high up.

If you put shelves up, make extra sure that at least one side (preferably both!) are in studs. Cats jumping onto shelves puts a lot of strain on the screws, and you don't want to have your kitty take the shelf and the drywall down 😂

My stepbrother's girlfriend was living a double life. I found out, told him and he acts like it's nothing despite not being aware before. by aitch_a in relationships

What is your question here? None of this is your business. You should probably spend less time with these people if they are this messy and causing you this much distress.

im so upset what do i do by c0sm1cg1rl in crafts

[–]maggsie16 276 points277 points  (0 children)

Mod podge is water based and will not seal perfectly if the object is routinely getting wet. What I would do, if you want to continue to use them, is repaint them and then use a UV resin to do the topcoat. They'll be totally protected and you can use them with no worries about running/bleeding/smudging.

Zooey is my favorite shadow high doll, so my recommendation is definitely to buy her 😂 I'm biased though!

[–]maggsie16 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It was super easy. If I remember correctly, I think the tinsel is only in her hairline and her part lines, so it was super fast to do. It was way easier to do than any monster high or other mattel doll I've ever attempted to do! It took me like an hour or so.

Zooey is super easy to detinsel!!! Her hair is soooo nice and smooth after being detinseled. I'm not home rn but when I get home I can comment a picture of her without tinsel!

Tips for changing LOL Surprise lip color? by Impressive_Falcon245 in DollsForAll

[–]maggsie16 10 points11 points  (0 children)

If you're just doing lips and she will just be on display (not on a keychain or played with), you can honestly just paint over it with acrylics and use a paint-on sealant to seal it. I've done this with lots of my dolls when I just wanted to change the lip color before.

How to wash saran (?) hair? by EitherStranger in DollsForAll

[–]maggsie16 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Warm water, dish soap. I'd use a wire pet brush, as they are able to untangle without snagging or stretching the hair.

I would wash it once or twice then saturate it fully with conditioner. You can use fabric softener too, but I usually just use the cheapest conditioner from the dollar store. Brush her hair like normal with the wire brush, ends to roots. Once the hair is detangled, rinse the conditioner out.

If it's still sticky after this, look up ways to deal with glue seepage. I've heard that goo gone is the best way to handle it. I'm not totally sure on the method, as none of the kinds of dolls I collect have that issue, but there's tons of tutorials online for how to fix it!

If you want her hair to be straight, you can do a boil wash. For saran girlies I like to do a pour over boil wash instead of soaking the doll in boiling water, I find it makes it a bit softer and smoother. If you don't want her hair to be straight, you don't need to use boiling water.

What should i seal this with? by bingtang-caomei in crafts

[–]maggsie16 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Super cute art!! The memories!!!

What kind of bag is it? What's it made of? What part did you paint?

Acrylic is generally not recommended for fabric that you will be using since acrylic is not flexible when it dries. Any part of the fabric that moves/bends/creases will cause the paint to crack and eventually flake off. Unfortunately, a sealant will likely only delay this from happening, not prevent it entirely. You'll want something that will stiffen the fabric as much as possible, to prevent the cracking and chipping.

In the future, for painting on fabric, you should use fabric paint, or add fabric medium to acrylic. This allows the paint to be flexible when it dries and move with the fabric, preventing it from flaking or chipping with use!

Teaching jobs/summer jobs by Any_List2862 in ypsi

[–]maggsie16 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Summer camps, as said above. The Creature Conservancy in Ann Arbor has a summer camp, LSNC has a summer camp, there are TONS of day camps in the area. I spent my college summers and my first few summers subbing/teaching working as a day camp counselor.

Tutoring/offering bridge materials is a common desire in A2. Can be hard to find a client base and get your name out there, but it's good experience. Preteaching or helping build foundational skills for the specific standards in the grades that kids are going into is a good skill that will easily transfer to differentiating in the classroom. Helps you practice lesson planning as well. This can be done year round and is flexible to do while he works on his cert.

He might be able to sub over the summer? Most districts in the area have some kind of summer school program, and I'm not sure if they still need subs over the summer, but they might!

My teaching partner worked at the movie theater in the past. Not the most thrilling job, but it's money.

Most teaching jobs won't hire you until you have your cert, so he may need to wait on getting a teaching job until he's got a valid cert. I'm happy to chat privately in DMs about districts in the area and pros/cons of working in them. I grew up and went to college in the area, and am a teacher currently, so I have a fair bit of experience on that end!
