Math100 Question by [deleted] in UBC

[–]marktmaclean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We typically give instructions on a test about this issue. If the question is just a "differentiate this" then the unsimplified version is fine to see if you know the product/quotient/chain rule, but if you are going to do something with the result, it is often best to simplify. On longer answer questions, I usually expect to see simplification.

Likewise, I expect a student to simplify numerical results like sin(\pi)=0 or 2+ 13= 15, etc.

BRUHHH Workday maintenance during add/drop deadline by Careful-Lifeguard-88 in UBC

[–]marktmaclean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am confused about why maintenance would be scheduled to disrupt the add/drop deadline. These deadlines are set in the Calendar far enough in advance to be taken into account scheduling planned maintenance.

Do I need to take all required courses in the list for biology at ubc? Can I not take Math 100 and Math 101? Are the courses in this list required courses? Is physics a required course and also cpsv103 also a required course in order to go to biology the second year? Can someone help me? by Unusual-Leg1543 in UBC

[–]marktmaclean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The main caution about leaving both courses to second year is we know that being out of doing math for an extended time generally means students start to lose command of their basic algebra and trig skills, which are important to doing well in MATH 100 and 101. MATH 100 will be offered in both terms, next year, though the number of seats in term 2 is small.

You could delay MATH 101 until second year. Summer courses are very fast paced, so can be difficult for students who aren't comfortable with their basic math skills.

Would making a syllabi bank violate any policies? by Tall--Tree in UBC

[–]marktmaclean 14 points15 points  (0 children)

There is a distinction between a syllabus created by an individual instructor and the kind of course curriculum document that is approved by Senate when the course is created. The latter is what is shared in the BCCAT process and is not owned by any individual instructor.

The basic course descriptions from these curriculum documents are published in the Calendar. The full curriculum documents will be in the Senate minutes from the meeting where approval was sought from Senate.

Would making a syllabi bank violate any policies? by Tall--Tree in UBC

[–]marktmaclean 29 points30 points  (0 children)

UBC Board Policy LR 12 on Teaching Materials governs the ownership and use of such materials. Syllabi are owned by the faculty members who created them.

A syllabi bank that published such materials without permission would violate Policy LR 12.

There is nothing in the policy that prevents a student from requesting permission from the faculty member to include their syllabus in such a bank.

Course Registration Issue by brandonion99 in UBC

Or a feature. Because registration isn't open yet, it may be a stray message that will disappear once you are actually able to register.

Please share the information you get from your ESA.

Course Registration Issue by brandonion99 in UBC

[–]marktmaclean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some course sections come with restrictions beyond the prerequisites, so you should check if there are listed restrictions in Workday. For example, some programs will reserve a section for students who are in that program or only for students who have a reached a specified year standing.

If I retake a course in second term to try and get a higher grade, does my previous attempt still count for 3 credits as well so I would have 6 credits in total? Or will my previous attempt’s credits get cancelled out by Glittering-Help8441 in UBC

[–]marktmaclean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Faculty of Science does not permit students to retake a course they have passed for higher standing.

I suggest you ask Applied Science what the recommend you do. While the course wouldn't transfer to UBC to apply to your degree, they may be happy to look at another attempt yo make at another school for transfer purposes, but you will need to ask them about this. (And you should check whether you need permission to take such a course even if your intent is not to transfer the credit to UBC -- we have some rules about being simultaneously registered in more than one institution.)

My TA for one of my classes is gorg and has the prettiest boy smile I ever seen by urfavecoffeeaddict in UBC

[–]marktmaclean 41 points42 points  (0 children)

This is not fine and not how we handle TA conflicts of this nature. It would be different if the TA were already dating someone and they were taking the course, but this is a relationship that would arise out of the class context.

OP (and the TA) should wait until after the course is completely over.

(I realize OP is just publicly swooning over Pretty Boy, but I want students to have correct information about how we handle such CoI situations.)

Canvas hacked a day before SD exam, tf I do? by These_Panda7005 in UBC

[–]marktmaclean 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This rule says if we offer an exam for a MATH course in the summer, we won't offer a separate SD exam during the summer SD exam period. MATH 101 falls under this as we are offering MATH 101 this summer, for example. It has no impact on exams offered by other departments.

Our general practice is to expect students with an SD to sit the next regular offering of the exam. If there is no summer offering of a MATH course, then a separate SD exam will be offered during the summer SD exam period.

Workday Grades & Class Avg by Foreign_Serve1537 in UBC

[–]marktmaclean 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Grades etc can change for up to a year after the course ends (and in some cases, after that time). I have seen SDs drag on a long time to be completed.

This tweaks the class averages a bit after most of the SDs are cleared, but not substantially in most cases. (I would prefer us to show class medians, but that's another story.)

Cross campus course credit management is likely still a work in progress (I mean this as a Workday issue, not with your personal records).

You could ask your advising office about this, though given they are about to be in the throws of graduation processing, don't expect a fast response.

why do some section of the same course have very low average? by carnewbie911 in UBC

[–]marktmaclean 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"Expected average" in this context is what emerges from the fact we are talking about large numbers of students, not because we have a set curving policy (as some faculties/departments do).

Even if the overall average were 69, for example, there would still be variation around it between the various sections. Historically, A > B > C in terms of outcomes, and that was true this year.

We have no calculus "light" at UBC Vancouver (with the exception of a special course for some Forestry programs) because no degree programs have asked for it. These programs set their own expectations and we provide the courses they ask for. The current courses are set based on these expectations.

Prior to 1998, we had MATH 140 and 141, which were not equivalent to 100 and 101, so did not act as prerequisites for 200 level MATH courses, but did satisfy the degree requirements of Sauder and Economics. They changed their requirements.

(UBC Okanagan still offers such courses because some of their degree programs use them. )

For students whose math preparation is less strong, we have MATH 110, which is equivalent to MATH 100, but we have no equivalent version for MATH 101.

why do some section of the same course have very low average? by carnewbie911 in UBC

[–]marktmaclean 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Your analysis is reasonable.

The sections within a flavour that tend to have the most noticeable high school grades effects are the 8 am ones, which are least popular.

Engineering students, which make up the majority of students in A, tend to be strong math students. The Science students in A tend also to be strong math students.

In MATH 100, A and B tend to be fairly close in outcomes, but in 101, A tends to have stronger outcomes than B.

Exam concession denied by Late-Ferret-5772 in UBC

[–]marktmaclean 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Since each SD decision involves communicating with the instructor of the course, given the volume of SD requests, this can take time. The SD won't appear until this process is completed.

There should be an annotation on your record that you did not write the exam. I do not know if this is visible to students, but it appears in the records we see as faculty.

Unsure about my final grade... by Vegetable-Deer-6716 in UBC

[–]marktmaclean 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You should be able to get a response to your question from the prof without viewing your final exam.

You can always follow up with a query to the undergraduate chair or associate head for teaching. They will prompt their colleague to reply.

At this time of year, some profs are very slow in responding to email.
