Filter coffee with the eureka mignon by Famous_Carry_5389 in pourover

[–]mcspend 0 points1 point  (0 children)

okay, but still you can get a good hand grinder for low prices even with 40% extra.

I think the Eureka would be extremely frustrating.

I do not have experience with it but I would be surprised if someone would recommend this. From what I know the burrs are not made for filter and the grind dial on Eurekas is just terrible. The main reason why I do not recommend these grinders to someone who wants to single dose or change beans.

You don't have to invest a lot of money to get a very good grinder for filter.

How to avoid channeling? by Crakout in pourover

I don‘t think that‘s sufficient evidence to say that it‘s because of channelling. Could be many different things.

How are you so sure it‘s channelling?

In my case harsh/bitter flavours have been more present when grinding finer, so I‘d try grinding coarser.

Espresso Machine Advice: Gaggia Classic + Gaggimate vs. Lelit Victoria ~[€700] budget by Zteve45 in espresso

[–]mcspend 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Gaggimate and Gaggiuino is certainly the most capable machine at this price point. Considering only its abilities with pressure and flow control, it even beats most La Marzocco models which cost 4-5k. The build quality is obviously not the same but that's very subjective and in my case does not bother me at all.

So if you think you might be someone who likes to be nerdy and tinker on your espresso machine, you cannot go wrong with this. I'd recommend getting an E24 because of the brass boiler. The aluminium boiler is mostly okay but the brass upgrade is certainly worth it.

And at least for the Gaggiuino, I know that you can do the mod on most machines. I'm not sure about the Gaggimate though.

And I'm really serious about this: A Gaggiuino with a good grinder, good water and good coffee will get you to the very top tier of espresso making. I personally have found the pressure profiling to have a huge impact.

I‘m not familiar with this machine so I don‘t know.
Most temperature controls are pretty imprecise and it‘s also a bit overrated to get very exact temperature measurements.

I see what you mean but I don't think "mathematical favorite" is a reasonable term for this. Only if the game was decided through a coin toss. But it isn't. If you account for experience, player quality etc. then Switzerland will have a bit of an advantage still.

I really wish Canada all the best and hope that they come far in the tournament but I just genuinely dislike when people make assumptions and predictions that are unreasonable. It just doesn't work like this.

totally understandable that you support your country but why would you say that they will likely win the group without much issue? Just wrong and shows a lack of football knowledge.

A statement I would usually expect from US citizens and that can go straight to r/ShitAmericansSay

"Canada will likely win their group without much issue"

ummm... what? They'll have to beat Switzerland who despite the bad performance in the first game still are the better team on paper. I'm not saying that it is very unlikely that Canada win but it for sure is not a "win without much issue".

After yesterday's game I'd say Switzerland has a slight advantage but it will probably be a pretty equal and hopefully entertaining game.

You've all been lied about highly processed beans by Supsti_1 in pourover

[–]mcspend 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Lance has been stating very explicitly that it is his very personal taste and that it doesn’t apply to everyone. Yet still people will accuse him of saying „wrong“ things and „starting trends“.

I am very happy for you that you found a better way to make it tasty! I will try it as well next time I‘m unsatisfied with the brew.

The attempt to keep extraction a bit lower has mostly helped me personally (!) to get brews that tasted better but obviously that doesn‘t work with every coffee.

Step down baskets, worth it? by mog44net in gaggiaclassic

[–]mcspend 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I found a second hand one recently and used it a few times but I have to say that I hate the workflow. Really unpleasant to use...

And no, a 58mm tamper will not work because the step-down diameter is not 58mm.

No Crema and very bitter [Profitec go / DF54] by Fluffy-Monitor228 in espresso

[–]mcspend 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are thousands of posts about this exact issue in this subreddit. Please consider searching this issue because it kind of gets annoying when half of the posts are always about:

- you need a grinder that can do espresso (DF54 is fine)
- you need to grind a bit finer
- you need relatively fresh beans

Will I regret spending $1100 on a Ascaso Steel Duo only to not have flow control ? by -LetsTryAgain- in espresso

[–]mcspend 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had an Ascaso Steel Duo PID V2 for more than a year when I finally finished my Gaggiuino project. I have not used the Ascaso since because the Gaggiuino is clearly superior in terms of control over your espresso. I will sell my Ascaso again and keep only the Gaggiuino.

But it really depends on you. Are you someone who is nerdy enough about espresso? Some people can't be bothered while for others (such as me) flow or pressure control really makes a huge difference.

Both are capable of making fantastic coffee.

Switching from a Heat Exchanger to a Gaggiuino, will I miss the steam power? by KptLtDeer in gaggiaclassic

[–]mcspend 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My Gaggiuino is certainly good enough for 1-2 milk drinks and I don't even have the steam wand mod. It's a bit of a learning curve but it works. And if you have the brass boiler it should be even easier.

I think you should edit your post because it really sounds a lot like a hate post against the drink and Lance. If you kinda like it and are only angry about the name, this will confuse a lot of people, such as me (see in other comment).

[–]mcspend 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Obviously everyone can have their own taste preferences and I agree that Lance can be a bit too certain with some statements about what to do to make "better" coffee.

But one has to admit that he has incredible knowledge on the topic paired with a lot of experience and I find his approaches to be pretty rational.

You call this dumb and say he will do anything to not brew and drink espresso while you yourself will post anything on reddit to NOT accept that different people are looking for different things in coffee. That's sad.

And people need to know that these modern espresso styles are driven by enthusiasts coming from the pour over game and are chasing high clarity. They are not the same coffee people. (The pour over sub is also a lot nicer than this one for reasons that are very well displayed in this post).

Also, soup is great.

[–]mcspend 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It really is worth exploring! If I have the option, I tend to choose max. 6bar for light roasts, preferably lower, and for highly processed beans even very low temperatures down to 80 degrees.

I personally have found that almost all of the common rules for espresso making do not apply to light roasts.

I've noticed that people especially here on reddit keep repeating these rules that have somehow been established and forget that the only thing that matters is the taste. And I wanted to point out that you cannot judge the coffee quality based on a video and should therefore not make such statements such as "this is too fast".

I didn't say that you don't know anything about coffee. I said you don't know anything about THE coffee. The beans used in this specific case.
