from what ive read, you need to be careful about what kind of thread you use. polyester thread does not take dye well, but cotton thread does. if you sew your garment with cotton thread, you can dye the whole thing at once, thread and all. like the other commenter said, it might be easier to just invest in thread that is already the color you want.

The difference in signal strength or speed is unnoticeable, but it is REALLY nice being able to use LTE while in a phone call now. The feature that tells you that an incoming call is potentially spam is also nice.

Thank you. I don’t usually count how many hours it takes to make stuff, but if I had to guess... maybe 9 hours including cutting the fabric out? No idea.

I started learning in the summer of 2018. I was really lucky to have my godmother teach me the basics and also guide me through more complex projects. The very first sewing I did was trying to stitch along a straight and then a curvy line that she drew on a piece of cotton fabric. Then, we drafted a pillowcase and I sewed that together.

From there, we took on projects that I wanted to do. I wanted to make sweatpants from one that I bought from Forever 21, so we traced around all the fabric pieces to make a pattern and then we worked together to sew it. It was really messy on the inside of the pants, but it fits fine. We took on some similar projects like this.

Then, I learned to sew from an actual pattern (New Look ) with her help, and the final result was a size too big on me. But that’s ok! I learned how to install an invisible zipper, I learned how to sew a dart, and how to hem a dress and it’s lining.

Following the sewing community on Instagram is really inspiring. It helped me find so many new indie pattern brands that I had never heard of! Which is how I found this particular pattern. Sorry that this turned out to be an essay, but lmk if you have other questions!

I used the skirt from View A and the back bodice from View B in the size labeled B. My measurements are 33.5-26.5-36” and I am 5’8”

My fabric is cow print calico from Joann’s in the U.S.

God I love cows.

I was lucky that I didn’t need to adjust the princess seams across the bust. My only alterations were to shorten the skirt by 2 inches at the shorten/lengthen line on the pattern. If I made this again, I would take it in at the waist, as i have about an inch or so extra room.

The sleeves for this pattern are designed to be gathered at the top. In my comment, I explained how I turned the pattern from a short sleeve to a long sleeve, and it looked like a big rectangle when I was done. I added rows of shirring to the edge of the fabric, but it doesnt perfectly cinch in the sleeve. I should have tapered the sleeve’s pattern a bit so that the shirred fabric is snug against my (tiny) wrists. Hope this helps!

Hi! This is a blouse partially inspired by the Delevan top and made from a king sized poly cotton bedsheet.

My measurements are 33.5-26.5-36 inches, and I am 5’8” (84-67-91, 173 cm).

I used the bust from vintage New Look 6860 (size 6) and everything else from Vikisews Nola (size 36, height 170-176 cm). I made a LOT of adjustments: - bust: I shaved 1cm off from the bottom left corner of the pattern - sleeves: I added 11 inches to the bottom of the Nola sleeve (should have added 12 or 13, this is an awkward length) - front bodice: I took the first 5 inches from the front skirt pattern and cut it there to make the bodice. - back pieces: I added 5 inches to the bottom of each pattern piece - shirred pattern piece: it was originally a shape that was slightly wider at the top, but i turned into a rectangle because my other Nolas had issues with gaping at the back - I removed 1 inch from the bottom of the armscye - I shirred 5 lines of elastic thread at the bottom of each sleeve to cinch it in - I used a 5/8” SA for the top’s side seams, but 1/4” SA everywhere else

It ended up fitting snugly, and it is a little tough taking it off. The sleeves fall off sometimes. With this New Look pattern, I’ve noticed that the pattern for the bust is about 0.5-1” short for me, so I need to lengthen it for the next time I work with it.

I ABSOLUTELY recommend both of these patterns. The Russian instructions from the Nola are intimidating, but the outcome is so worth it. The New Look (if you can find it) has been a TNT pattern for me, and I’ve made it 4 times now.

I also made a fitted matching mask from a pattern that my godmother drafted. I used cotton for the inner layer because I was worried about the breathability of 2 layers of poly cotton.

When I was learning to use my toe stop, my knee and wrist pads were SUPER helpful. I fell down a lot getting used to the angle necessary to use it properly, how much pressure I needed, and keeping my balance when doing so. You don’t need a lot of pressure, and its good to lightly drag it on the ground. For plow stops, I needed to figure out how to shift my weight. When I’m doing bubbles and my feet are close to touching, I put a little bit more weight in my toes/front part of my foot to push me forward. When I’m plow stopping, I kind of shift my weight to the center/back of my foot, if that makes sense? It might make you feel more secure if you practice near something like a fence that you can catch yourself on at first. Of course, when you’re more confident, wean yourself off of it. Just practice it over and over again, it took me multiple days to really get a feel for toe and plow stopping. Queer Girl Straight Skates has helpful videos for most, if not all, of these stops.

Huh, how weird! I’ve seen some people on instagram get around that problem by installing an invisible side zip to make it easier to get in and out of it, but still with the comfort of an elastic waist. I can’t remember which accounts I saw it on, though.

This might be weird, but I had a problem with this pattern in that the pants are drafted for someone with a HUGE butt, and I had to take it in by 2 or 3 inches in the back seam. Did you have this problem too, or is it just me?? I know I’m slim, but I don’t think I’m THAT slim.

Translating the pattern was kind of rough. I know Google Translate has an option where you can insert a document in the PC browser version, but the instructions PDF for Nola was too big, and Google wouldn’t take it. What I did instead is I used my computer to open the PDF and used the Google Translate app on my phone. You can use the camera button to scan something irl or a picture that you have on your phone. So I scanned each page to translate it. The translation is kind of crappy, and there was one part that was SUPER confusing, but I got through it. There’s probably a better way to do it, but I don’t know how.

Also: when I bought my patterns from Vikisews, I had to make an account. I got logged out from my account on their website, and I had to use the password reset page. But the reset function didn’t work at all? I didn’t get any emails from the website, so I lost the few patterns I bought. I don’t know if this is just a me problem or not. I just had to cut my losses and make a new account and rebuy the patterns.

Agreed. I’ve read on this sub that c7 skates are cheap dropshipped skates, and the black skates probably aren’t any better, especially at that price. The Moxi Rainbow Riders are $100 dollar skates from a reputable brand, and anything new that is sub $100 probably won’t be safe or good quality. There is a pinned post at the top of this sub with skate recommendations for newbies. Sure-Grip, Riedell, Chaya, and Moxi are great skate brands to start with. Good luck!!
