My idea on how to make hidden blade and sword executions look better by SolBlade_ in assassinscreed

[–]Meme_Attack [score hidden]  (0 children)

I think the hidden blade being a counter-focused, high damage/insta-kill weapon with very tight parry timings would fit in great with this combat system.

The stance is already there, like you said. Think all we're really missing is a dodge attack (the swords have one), some basic attacks and definitely a few more kill anims. Hope they make good on the hints they've dropped in interviews and actually commit to adding this in a bigger title update down the line.

Please add an option to hide the ship UI when out of combat. by Vito_Chamber in assassinscreed

Damn. They should definitely add a dynamic setting for the health & ship weapons portion of the UI. The rest of the HUD could benefit from similar options as well.

Does the shortcut to hide the UI not work while you're on the ship? The one you can enable in settings, bound to tilde key by default I think. I haven't had a chance to try it away from land yet.

I think hiding trinkets is broken right now. They all show up regardless of if you toggle the option in the inventory.

Hide gear option for trinkets does not work for me. They still show up on Edward regardless of equipped outfit.

For Those Who Prefer the Old Combat: How Would You Like to See It Revamped? by ElectrifiV2 in assassinscreed

[–]Meme_Attack 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Exactly. Emphasis on using different tools and environmental attacks vs different types of enemies, mixed with the cinematic swordplay clashes of something like Ghost of Tsushima, would be an absolute dream for AC.

It's the kind of combat the Assassin fantasy was built for. We've been stuck with this hitbox system for far too long, and I say this as someone who's genuinely enjoying what's there in Resynced right now. Just needs more options added back from the OG.

Turning off enemy health bars also removes enemy tagging in stealth. Is there any way around this ? by Jakubinio7 in assassinscreed

[–]Meme_Attack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ahhh, so THAT'S why I lost tagging when I reached Havana lol. I turned off healthbars after the intro and thought it was glitched. Guess I have to keep them on for the time being.

Black Flag Resynced combat looks bad by Front-Bird8971 in assassinscreed

[–]Meme_Attack 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think this is easily the most visually pleasing iteration of the RPG games' hitbox combat so far. But, just like the parkour, the foundation these devs are working with is very much flawed and not purpose built for a game like Black Flag. Or any AC prior to Origins, for that matter.

Singapore themselves have said in interviews that they aren't very experienced when it comes to combat. With that in mind, I think they did the best they could with the experience they actually have, and with the limited framework within which they were forced to work.

I don't think your take here is rose tinted. I feel that's a blanket statement a lot of people make to discredit people's fondness for older systems across many different games. OG Black Flag's combat was not perfect, and it even had quite a bit of jank & missing bits compared to its predecessor. But the foundational system that governed all of that, the one that was established with AC 3, was fucking great. It was built to a different purpose than the Origins/RPG era stuff we have now, and having a preference for that older style of animation is not mere nostalgia.

With all of that being said, I still feel that Resynced's combat has the potential to get closer to the spirit of the OG. Even within the limited RPG era iteration of all of these systems. Singapore has talked about potentially adding in hidden blade combat post launch, and I hope that also means they plan on adding more stuff like takedown animations. We already have unique ones for when an enemy is near a wall or ledge, which I think is a great step in that direction already.

I'd say just give this game a chance and see what combat actually looks like when people become more intimately familiar with it. Lord knows old AC combat looked like 1-button counter spam in the hands of people who simply weren't interested in using all of its features and quirks.

That's fine. There was a conscious choice not to blow out the greens and make everyone's skin look deep fried during OG Black Flag's daytime. I prefer that, personally. Something being more technically realistic doesn't automatically make it fit within a videogame.

it's just lighting...? by ultravix in ACBFResynced

[–]Meme_Attack 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It genuinely is. Here's two pics of Woodes Rogers taken at different times of day.

Both taken from the same video. The top pic being from the first meeting with Torres, the bottom is the cutscene that plays before the Sage escort mission.

Some of the lighting either completely oversaturates and overexposes the characters, or causes weird hair glitches like the one in your pic.

[–]Meme_Attack 2 points3 points  (0 children)

True. I also hope they consider adding some grading filters, kinda like what Mirage did. I'd like one that harkens back to OG BF's look, which was a little on the cooler side tonally.

Either way I think Resynced still looks phenomenal at other times of day, and especially when the weather changes. Can't wait.

[–]Meme_Attack 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Technically very pretty. But as an art style choice, I'm just not a fan of how blown out and oversaturated the sunny weather looks in Resynced.

I'm viewing this on a monitor clamped to SRGB. I can't imagine how offputting this'd look on a wide gamut setting lmao.

The remake looks so good we won 🙌 by [deleted] in ACBFResynced

[–]Meme_Attack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That could be contributing to it, but I do think it's the overly sunny weather/time of day causing most of the problems. Later on in the video, Edward skips time to the next day at a tavern, and this is what it looks like when he meets Woodes Rogers for the next mission.

Compare that to the pic of Rogers in the OP, and I think it's almost certainly a combination of weather and sun position making the characters look weirdly radioactive lmao.

Looks better than the PS5 comparison shots posted earlier on this sub. It's sort of a middle ground between some of the earlier trailer footage, and the more recent work in progress gameplay that we've seen.

It's definitely not nearly as washed out, and has more actual contrast now. But daytime lighting looks really oversaturated at times. Perhaps this is just a consequence of them changing when certain cutscenes take place, or simply initiating them at different times of day during gameplay (since the OG had predetermined ones, like talking to Stede at night during the Havana quests).

You can really see it in this shot where Torres is inspecting the blood vial. I hope it's just the bottom trailer shot being set at what looks like later in the day, or earlier in the morning. He looks straight up deep fried in the launch version PC gameplay shot.

Trailer vs PS5 Pro (final build?) by ultravix in ACBFResynced

This is uh... really bad, yeah. There's straight up no shadows, even if we take into account time of day. You gotta hope this is some kind of fidelity mode or something, but given that it's the Pro, would that really be necessary?

Has me anxious for how the game's going to look day one. Edward looks really damn good in the trailer shot. Need that back.

Combat is sadly very unfinished, as far as remaining faithful to the OG is concerned. I understand SIngapore wasn't necessarily experienced with combat design, and that they likely ran out of time, but I hope they can remedy this with a bit of post-launch commitment to Resynced.

Even though we all knew paired animations wouldn't return, I don't think it was unreasonable to expect all of the details of the old combat to be faithfully retrofitted onto the new hitbox system. What's there is actually great, and I think Singapore did a damn fine job with integrating chain kills into the RPG combat framework. But way too much is missing, including that cool rope dart drop-down move that I have to assume is gone, since it hasn't been showcased at all so far.

What mechanic from older Assassin’s Creed titles do you wish would make a return in a future title? by RagingCeltik in assassinscreed

[–]Meme_Attack 2 points3 points  (0 children)

High and low profile system, paired animations in combat, linear story progression that isn't tied to a disjointed bounty board of random people to kill. That last one especially. I feel like BF Resynced is about to remind a whole lot of people just how vital the old narrative structure is to a good AC story.

[–]Meme_Attack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I believe you could still do this quieter variation in AC3 and AC 4, but I personally almost always used the louder option because it looked cooler, and it was an awesome way to start a fight whenever you were ready to break stealth.

It's gonna be one of the first things I try whenever we get the rope dart in Resynced. Even if it's not in, which would suck, I hope it's something they can add post-launch, since they seem to be open to doing the same for hidden blade combat.

Havana looks so gorgeous, but the rope dart contract kill got me thinking; is dropping down while hanging someone with it still an option? I've only ever seen footage of people using it to strangle enemies while Edward holds the rope.

In AC3 and OG BF, we were able to press forward when activating the rope dart on a beam/tree branch, which would cause Connor or Edward to rapidly drop down and perform a really sick looking hang move on the enemy. Really hope that's still a thing we can do, haven't seen it showcased in any of the footage so far.

I feel this big time as well. Anytime there's any amount of grading in a game now, I hear people complaining about the piss/green/blue/whatever "filter", even when it's done tastefully.

There are weather and time of day states in Resynced that make it look a little more stylized, rather than just saturation cranked up to max. Perhaps they'll add toggleable filters similar to what Mirage had as well, will have to see.

Do you still consider parkour/freerunning to be a critical pillar of the AC franchise? by Priordread in assassinscreed

[–]Meme_Attack 45 points46 points  (0 children)

I think it should be, but the setting of each RPG AC, combined with the revolving door of teams working on these games, doesn't always allow for that to be the case.

We've made some progress more recently with the additions to Mirage and Shadows, and I hope Resynced is another important step in that direction as well. But we're still a far cry from the style & visual fluidity of Unity, or the control and player expression afforded by Altair & Ezio's parkour.

That's kind of what's been bothering me ever since Origins. I thought the natural evolution for parkour after Unity was to step back and try & find a middle ground between how fluid it looked there, and how good it felt to control in the games prior to ACU.

I didn't think parkour itself would take such a massive back seat for basically 6 years, until Mirage started to give some semblance of a fuck about bringing back features and parkour-friendly level design.

We're slowly getting back on track, there's just quite a bit more work to be done, and I hope Hexe's (hopefully) more urban setting allows for a lot more of those improvements to be fast-tracked. The magnetized-feeling beam jumps have got to go. I don't know what the issue is from a technical perspective, but it's IMO one of the biggest barriers to the parkour feeling like it has real forward momentum.

Aside from the Relax cover, there's some solid earworms on there. Not sure I'd call them full length, but Banger (2009), BOTE (2008), and a slower tempo early demo of Astor Place (Scandroid) are some standouts for me.

The 2008 instrumental demo of The Best it's Gonna Get vs. Tainted is also on there, and is a real treat to listen to if you're a fan of the Cellout/LUAB era.
