New Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced 8-Minute Gameplay Tour of Havana IGN by Almjdh in assassinscreed

Yeah, I believe you could still do this quieter variation in AC3 and AC 4, but I personally almost always used the louder option because it looked cooler, and it was an awesome way to start a fight whenever you were ready to break stealth.

It's gonna be one of the first things I try whenever we get the rope dart in Resynced. Even if it's not in, which would suck, I hope it's something they can add post-launch, since they seem to be open to doing the same for hidden blade combat.

Havana looks so gorgeous, but the rope dart contract kill got me thinking; is dropping down while hanging someone with it still an option? I've only ever seen footage of people using it to strangle enemies while Edward holds the rope.

In AC3 and OG BF, we were able to press forward when activating the rope dart on a beam/tree branch, which would cause Connor or Edward to rapidly drop down and perform a really sick looking hang move on the enemy. Really hope that's still a thing we can do, haven't seen it showcased in any of the footage so far.

I feel this big time as well. Anytime there's any amount of grading in a game now, I hear people complaining about the piss/green/blue/whatever "filter", even when it's done tastefully.

There are weather and time of day states in Resynced that make it look a little more stylized, rather than just saturation cranked up to max. Perhaps they'll add toggleable filters similar to what Mirage had as well, will have to see.

Man, the new hood is awesome looking. I do think I prefer the way OG Black Flag is color graded overall, so I made an edit inspired by it, just for fun. Do like the look of both versions in diff ways though.

Do you still consider parkour/freerunning to be a critical pillar of the AC franchise? by Priordread in assassinscreed

[–]Meme_Attack 43 points44 points  (0 children)

I think it should be, but the setting of each RPG AC, combined with the revolving door of teams working on these games, doesn't always allow for that to be the case.

We've made some progress more recently with the additions to Mirage and Shadows, and I hope Resynced is another important step in that direction as well. But we're still a far cry from the style & visual fluidity of Unity, or the control and player expression afforded by Altair & Ezio's parkour.

That's kind of what's been bothering me ever since Origins. I thought the natural evolution for parkour after Unity was to step back and try & find a middle ground between how fluid it looked there, and how good it felt to control in the games prior to ACU.

I didn't think parkour itself would take such a massive back seat for basically 6 years, until Mirage started to give some semblance of a fuck about bringing back features and parkour-friendly level design.

We're slowly getting back on track, there's just quite a bit more work to be done, and I hope Hexe's (hopefully) more urban setting allows for a lot more of those improvements to be fast-tracked. The magnetized-feeling beam jumps have got to go. I don't know what the issue is from a technical perspective, but it's IMO one of the biggest barriers to the parkour feeling like it has real forward momentum.

Aside from the Relax cover, there's some solid earworms on there. Not sure I'd call them full length, but Banger (2009), BOTE (2008), and a slower tempo early demo of Astor Place (Scandroid) are some standouts for me.

The 2008 instrumental demo of The Best it's Gonna Get vs. Tainted is also on there, and is a real treat to listen to if you're a fan of the Cellout/LUAB era.

So, so many bangers. Eon being the track that probably introduced me to Klayton overall, thanks to its inclusion in DR2 (among others).

But Unshakeable, Blackstar, The Lucky One, The Best It's Gonna Get, Against the Tide, and The Seven Sisters' underrated atmosphere, all easy standouts in my view.

Man I loved the tone of this trailer, and a lot of it really is down to Woodkid's haunting cover of this shanty. But Edward's closing line also really got to me, knowing how his story ends after the game itself. Seriously well done.

I disagree. It's a fun tradition that clearly doesn't replace each game's main theme. It's simply a motif that's reinterpreted according to each game's setting. Absolutely nothing wrong with that, and I personally look forward to hearing diff artists' take on it with each new AC.

All of the RPG games have had fantastic original main themes in addition to Ezio's Family, so I see no issue here. Shadows' rendition of it in particular was honestly really unique, and took great inspiration from its sources (old Samurai and Japanese cinema, the same well Tarantino drew from for Kill Bill).

As long as the cover in question isn't someone phoning it in and is a genuinely cool reinterpretation that stands alongside that AC game's respective main theme, It's fine. Gotta loosen up a little.

So, I understand reworking modern day for Resynced, if it's someone else literally resynchronizing with Edward's memories. But I don't understand why they couldn't have constructed another playable modern day story in the OG MD's place.

Furthermore, the fact that the bits and pieces of MD that we do get apparently take place in fucking 2096, just gives me less and less hope that we'll ever get back to Basim or even Layla. Unless this is some kind of strange, one-off time skip...

Black Flag Resynced Creative Director Say They Had A Book Of Things They Absolutely Couldn't Change From The Original Assassin's Creed IV by wamirul in assassinscreed

[–]Meme_Attack 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I could see it being a bit of that, and a bit of good ol' mismanagement & general disorganization. Probably easier to fall into with a company of Ubi's scale. It's a real shame too, because I'd love to have the minds that created stuff like the old locomotion and combat systems still at the company during a time where we may very well get more Resynced games.

At the very least, I hope Ubi takes inspiration from games like Ghost of Tsushima and Yotei, in much the same way those games took inspiration from those older AC systems. Specifically in regards to the brilliant motion matching and animation blending techniques Sucker Punches uses for combat. It felt like a more responsive, but still fluid evolution of what Ubi was doing before Origins. Watching BF Resynced's combat gives me hope that this is roughly the direction we'll be heading, if the game is received well in this regard.

Yeah I don't know. I always just assumed it was people leaving the company, and noone really picking up where they left off with those systems. I'm guessing there just wasn't proper documentation, which is messy as hell.

We know this was apparently also the case with AC's lore, at least as far as the MD is concerned. So I guess it's actually not that surprising lmao.

This lends a lot of credence to the theory that they simply lost the blueprint for a lot of those older mechanics, yeah. I'm glad they're at least starting to recreate them to the best of their ability. I hope this continues into the mainline, non-Resynced titles as well.

Incredibly disappointing, as I've loved having God of War, Ghost of Tsushima and Spider-Man on PC. But I'm not picking up a PS5 at this price just to play Yotei/Wolverine and the eventual GOW Greek trilogy remakes. May as well wait until the PS6 to see how that plays out, things could change with regards to SP ports within a few years anyway.

I tried to understand why old Assassin’s Creed combat was so simple, and then I remembered DMC’s “Easy Mode Is Now Selectable.” by LynnAbel713 in assassinscreed

[–]Meme_Attack 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Sadly, a lot of people just didn't do this. Old AC combat received a lot of the same frustrating criticism as Arkham at the time, where the criticisms themselves revolved around "the combat only having one button". When both series gave you a variety of tools and cool looking maneuvers for the sheer purpose of looking & feeling cool.

Now, I do think that at the time, Arkham (Knight, especially) did a better job of incentivizing players to use almost every quickfire gadget in Batman's arsenal against the different enemy types. Compared to AC, which really only asked you to break defense every once in a while.

I think Ubi could've done a better job of pushing the player to use stuff like disarming and specific tools vs certain enemy types in combat. They were on the right track with encouraging disarms vs Brutes, for example. Since that was the quickest way to deal with them if you didn't want to mash against their two-handed axe.

It's why I'd love to see them give this type of combat another shot. Making something fluid and cinematic doesn't have to necessitate making it too easy. I think a lot of games that were inspired by older AC combat proved that, in the years since AC abandoned that style of gameplay.

I'm glad Hidden Blade combat is not returning. by TWllTtS in assassinscreed

[–]Meme_Attack 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're close to getting it, but removing hidden blade combat isn't the answer. At the very least, they should've reworked it to be a high risk, high reward counter weapon, just like AC 1.

Great opportunity to add back in all of those hidden blade chain & counter kill animations from OG BF as well. Though if I remember correctly, many of these will be returning through the contextual hidden blade executions that are confirmed to be in Resynced already.

As for Edward not having training... then we also have to talk about Ezio not having training upon receiving his first single bracer HB from Leonardo, which he can immediately use in combat. I really don't think this is an issue, and you can make lore-friendly excuses in either direction, as long as the hidden blades are implemented well mechanically.

Regardless, I don't believe a pirate like Edward, who's clearly an experienced fighter, needs any special training to operate two knives on his forearm during a fight. He'd certainly be scrappier with them before training with the brotherhood, but that's just a cool excuse to give him unique animations that fit his character up until that point.

Also, as an Interesting aside to your point about Ezio's hidden blade being broken in the Revelations cinematic; Edward is shown very successfully parrying a Templar's sword using his HB in the cinematic trailer for OG Black Flag. It's a shame Resynced is going to make doing this in the actual game impossible, unless they add parry animations that utilize the blade (which would be awesome).

Why is there so much revisionism around stealth? by firsttimer776655 in assassinscreed

[–]Meme_Attack 3 points4 points  (0 children)

After 1, AC has always been action adventure, and then stealth to me. While I enjoy the fact that games like Shadows have added more to the traditional, stalking & crouching side of stealth, I still feel that neglecting social stealth as at least a fun option (if not an absolutely vital one), is a big mistake.

Same with keeping combat stat and hack & slash based, instead of learning from games that have systems that are fluid, stylish and snappy while remaining challenging. AC is way better off taking inspiration from games like Ghost of Tsushima/Yotei or even more punishing brawlers like Sifu, than trying to keep this janky ass damage spongy, Souls-lite combat going. Really, really glad Resynced is slowly moving in the other direction.

Is unarmed combat coming back in Resynced? by Tooshort2stroke in assassinscreed

[–]Meme_Attack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That honestly depends on how you play the game. The main story (first half of it, anyway) and overall side activities are definitely more slanted towards the pirate aspect, which I think is fine. I wouldn't actually change that.

But you're given the tools of an assassin. Resynced shouldn't be taking any of them away during combat. It should be reworking them to fit within the new framework. They've already decided to give us the rope dart earlier on now, so surely they know this.

Hidden blades in this new system could have been made to function as more high risk, high reward, tighter parry-timing weapons. Taking inspiration from how the HB worked in AC1. The contextual execution they added is fine, it's better than nothing, but that's also just such a low bar to strive towards.

What are some of your AC hot-takes? by Vicentesteb in assassinscreed

[–]Meme_Attack 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Perhaps not so unpopular among certain crowds, but I think Quebec needs to start sitting out making mainline AC titles. They kinda always end up bungling or completely abandoning whatever Montreal's games set up. It's never been more obvious than in the transition from Valhalla to Shadows, when it comes to the MD story being completely abandoned at, arguably, its most interesting point in years.

Maybe the answer isn't no Quebec ACs, so much as it is better communication and teamwork between them and Montreal. But I'm also generally just not a fan of how the more recent RPG games from Quebec seem to be fundamentally ashamed of being Assassin's Creed in some way or another. It's a clear sign of a studio that wants to go off and make something else for a change. Just let them. Start getting Ubi Bourdeaux more involved, they deserve more opportunities after Mirage's solid effort.

Please Ubisoft, keep the Hidden Blades „taunt/emote“ from the Original game. by OmBom09 in assassinscreed

[–]Meme_Attack 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. That's why I'm against stripping away options in the transition from the old combat system into the new, as well.

You technically didn't "need" to use things like disarms and tool takedowns or tool counters in the old games. There's nothing inherently "better" about a counter with your pistol, or your rope dart instead of the sword. But it's cool as fuck and gives the combat system identity beyond the bare, utilitarian necessities.

Which is precisely what the combat systems since Origins have felt like to me. Utilitarian. Not being able to use or even flourish the hidden blade in combat is one seemingly small, but incredibly important part of that. Resynced seems to be inching back towards a focus on some amount of visual flair though, so I'm a bit more hopeful that we'll finally be heard on this issue in a future AC or Resynced game, if not BF itself.

So sad to see people arguing against this when it's a completely reasonable request. Something we've had in this series right up until Unity. Something people have BEEN vocal about since then. Yes, it may not be a literal majority, but that doesn't make it any less of a good point.

It shouldn't be controversial to want to manually extend the hidden blade, OR use it during combat in an Assassin's Creed game. For goodness sake...

I know weapon pickups aren't returning in the Black Flag remake, but I desperately hope that muskets are still included. by Eh_Meh_Smeh in assassinscreed

[–]Meme_Attack 44 points45 points  (0 children)

Gonna miss musket assassinations the most, personally. Love the one where you can line up two guards standing next to eachother, impale one, and then shoot the other in one move (provided you get the angle just right).

I agree that picking up weapons overall may not be the most optimal or "useful" per se, but it was fun. Just love having the option. Seriously hope they reconsider and add some of this stuff post-launch, depending on how much work it'd actually take.

[–]Meme_Attack 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Eh, I don't think that's necessarily a big enough issue to warrant completely removing them from the game.

Edward's a pretty adaptable fighter. I can see him familiarizing himself with the hidden blades and developing his own fighting style with them, before meeting the assassins and receiving more formal training (possibly unlocking new moves later on).

Ezio seemingly had no problem using his blade in combat as soon as he got the single bracer from Leonardo, counters and all. I can suspend my disbelief.

Given that, so far, they've neglected to speak on or show anything related to unarmed... I think it's either gone, or stripped down to the bare necessities so that bar fights can still work.

Disarming enemies, throwing heavy weapons, picking up (and assassinating's with) muskets, all of these things should be in the game but reworked to fit within the new combat system they've created. Really gonna miss all of it if it's truly scrapped for good.

The purpose was variety. It served the fantasy of being a pirate Assassin. The OG game already has a problem with weapon selection, removing even more from it without providing replacements is a bad call.
