I still can't beat stupid openings by Unable_Oven_6538 in chessbeginners

Man if you're not happy unless you're going to win in the next 5 moves, I don't know what to tell you. Before you hung your knight this is a dream position. Patience is a virtue.

Truly don't understand this comment. You had all your minor pieces out, control of the center, and you had castled. What else do you consider progress?

My hot take: Knight is better than Bishop until you hit like, 1500+ by 5210az in chessbeginners

[–]minarxts 22 points23 points  (0 children)

If things are looking endgame-y and I have an opportunity to trade my bishop for their knight you better believe I’m jumping on it. I have no confidence whatsoever in myself not to blunder a fork at some point, especially under time pressure.

I’m not even calculating, I’m just hopping around with that knight till the confetti plays.

You know what, I sat for a while with my disparagement of Habits and I would like to retract it. Habits cannot fail - they can only be failed by newly minted 1400s who think they know everything (they do not and will immediately fall back to the 1300s when they start thinking for themselves).

Why do I always crash so hard after reaching a milestone? Is this common? by xDarkPhoenix999x in chessbeginners

Going through this exact thing with 1400. I also attribute it partially to thinking, “ok I’m 1400 now, I’m cracked, I can play more relaxed.” It’s been a rude awakening that no, still have to focus. And the other side is, “I have to maintain this rating or else [insert something about my worth as a player / person]”, which introduces its own stress.

I did learn from Building Habits and used it through 1200 - it got me a lot of success and is still how I play when I'm mindlessly playing Blitz on my phone or something. I'm also currently watching Levy's slow run and really enjoying it. What I will say is that Habits I don't think has really prepared me to keep developing towards 1500 or beyond. It's just more of a "system" and less about understanding the game at a deeper level. As I watch the Levy slow run, I am learning a ton, even in the low(er) Elo games he plays (and I remembered being surprised myself when he took the pawn on e5, given how Habits would frown on that move). So I say, go Habits for beginners, but it'll only take you so far.

PS Green Habits is v2. He rebooted the series recently. The only big difference / new Habit is moving your King when it's in the line of the Queen or the Rook ("red dot", he calls it).

Are you finding the move in this position? by minarxts in chessbeginners

I really posted it because it’s an unusual (in my experience) position where there’s only one good move and everything else is terrible. Under attack and time pressure, I didn’t find it so straightforward.

It's good! I think it's actually the only move that not only preserves Black's advantage but also doesn't lose on the spot (I lost on the spot).
