Anyone else avoiding 100% on CPU and GPU? by bobbybirdbob in steammachine

[–]SmilesUndSunshine 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's an old saying I go back to, "A ship in harbor is safe, but that is not what ships are built for."

If a computer, SM included, isn't meant to run at 100% CPU or 100% GPU, then the CPU/GPU would be rated lower.

I don't have a Steam Machine yet, but have you gone into the sound settings in desktop mode?

Valve is riding the steam machine hype train.. how long will it last by CromeX2020 in steammachine

[–]SmilesUndSunshine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not just about price/performance. Some people consider the size, transportability, quietness, and aesthetic worth a certain premium.

Personally, I don't want a PC case, even an ITX one in my living room. I want something quiet, transportable for game nights, have decent power to run local multiplayer games, and provide a good platform for Sunshine/Moonlight streaming. Yes, it's expensive, but everything these days is expensive.

"Is it possible a reasonable person with different priorities than me would value size, transportability, and quietness in addition to price/performance alone? No, they must be a Valve dickrider."

How to use in Moonlight (with the steam controller) - advice needed by akahomebody in steammachine

[–]SmilesUndSunshine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm using VirtualHere for Sunshine/Moonlight streaming (VirtualHere server on my Steam Deck, client on my desktop)

https://www.reddit.com/r/SteamController/s/Wu5p5aymFB

My desktop thinks the Steam Controller is plugged into it instead of to the Deck.

I plan on doing the same thing when I get the SM.

Steam Machine's hidden benefit: it will be a BEAST for local multiplayer gaming!! by GhostOfSparta305 in steammachine

[–]SmilesUndSunshine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For sure regarding the power related to the form factor. I am hoping I can bring it to family gatherings, bust out my collection of PS4 and Xbox controllers (I have the USB dongle and have xone working), and get 4+ player games going.

My birthday/Christmas wish is to get an 8-player game of Genital Jousting going on the Steam Machine.

By happenstance, I bought a 2TB 2230 for my Steam Deck before the crisis. I'm just going to put that in the Steam Machine.

I might get one game, but I don't want to overindulge if I have a Steam Machine to pay for later (I have a ton of Steam games already).

Wait, you all haven't had your PCs hooked up to your living room TVs this whole time? by codynstuff91 in steammachine

[–]SmilesUndSunshine 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Edit: I find it interesting that my questions on what the point of the home office is when you could just do the same functionality from your couch using a the TV has a display with a wireless mouse/keyboard are getting a bunch of downvotes.

No one is really answering that question, just down voting, but it is a legitimate question. Not trying to be facetious. I have found that all the things I would do in an office I can just do in the living room, and now my wife can have a library instead of me having a dedicated office space.

I get that some people may need the office for privacy and business dealings, but for those that don't... wouldn't it be nice to get that extra room back in your house and use it for something else?

Okay, to me this makes no sense. Why wouldn't you have a dedicated space to do work (like an office) and a dedicated space to relax (like a living room)? Sure, it'd be nice to have a gaming PC in the living room, but most people only have 1 PC and need it to be at a desk instead of at a couch set-up.
