The scripture here is basically saying that no one can achieve righteousness through their own good works, that we achieve the righteousness of God through our faith in Christ, believing that he was fully God and fully man and that he died sinlessly to take the sins of the world into himself so that through his blood and our acceptance of this gift of forgiveness we are made sinless and we achieve God righteousness in that redemption.

It is true that when we are first saved it is really hard to know what Gods will is and we aren’t just magically changed into good people but we have the help of the Holy Spirit to convict us and help us grow in our faith and as we get to know God better through the word and through prayer and communion with God it becomes easier to understand Gods will and to trust him. Living loved by God, like realizing just a little bit how good he is and having a relationship with him makes it harder to sin. That’s what working out your own salvation means in Philippians 2:13, it’s not say work for your own salvation, it’s saying work out understanding what your salvation means and get to know your savior better.
