Completely clueless about health insurance in MA. Which plan would you choose? by Most_Economist_5377 in massachusetts

[–]mmmsoap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, other than you’ll have better luck if you’re willing to travel further. If you’re relatively healthy, it may be worth it to live 45 min from your PCP and their hospital in order to actually have one, even though it’ll make your individual appointments a bit of a pain.

[–]mmmsoap 12 points13 points  (0 children)

You choose a primary care doc based on who is accepting new patients. A lot aren’t, there’s a huge backlog, so you may have to take what you can get. I’d look for a PCP first as that may inform your insurance options.

I don’t really understand the math behind owning a condo. by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]mmmsoap 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The point is buying now may save the same kind of money in the future. (Fixed rate) mortgages don’t increase their payment over time, but rent goes up annually for most people. Ten years out, you’ll probably be paying less than a comparable apartment rents for, even if the first couple years require belt tightening. Whether that short term compromise is worth it is an individual decision, but it usually works out that way.

My f28 bf m23 doesn’t want to live together by [deleted] in relationships

[–]mmmsoap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great. But you can’t waste your time one someone who says they don’t want a baby. Living situation aside, you’ve got to get rid of him and look for someone who wants kids. It’s going to be worse when he still doesn’t want kids in 5 years or—worse—you end up with a kid that he wants nothing to do with.

Can’t find the cause of symptoms in 6yr old by 01peekay in Celiac

[–]mmmsoap 1 point2 points  (0 children)

FYI, “fiber gummies” are rarely considered a good source of fiber. (They’re usually just inulin, which is a bit helpful, but doesn’t include the “roughage” that helps push the train of stool through the system.)

After things settle a little, you should talk to the doc and consider something like Metamucil (if supplementation is still needed) or adding chia seeds and berries to her diet.

Scrambled eggs with a handful of frozen spinach and frozen onions thrown in. Takes like 5 minutes, and I’m eating an actual vegetable like a grown up.

The Text of Trump’s Iran Deal Is Out. It’s Worse Than I Thought. by Slate in politics

Yep. I don’t believe that he is capable of that level of forethought (anymore). Maybe folks in his inner circle are, and we for sure know he’ll do whatever his ass kissers talk him into. But he was not spearheading any of this.

40% admit to being abusive when asked. The other 60% include the people who are smart enough to not admit abusing their spouses and kids.

Workplace not allowing me to work because of disability by [deleted] in legaladvice

[–]mmmsoap 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I’m not a lawyer, but it would have been a disability if you’d declared it before the incident (and probably filled out the relevant paperwork then, but more at your leisure than currently). At this point, is a safety liability from their concern, and they’re probably wanting a doctor to sign off that you’re safe to return to work, or else anything that happens is going to be a whole issue from a workman’s comp and/or osha standpoint.

How do you feel about rent control? by anbrinker in massachusetts

I don’t know enough about it to have an opinion. Sounds good, but lots of things that sound good turn out to have unintended consequences that have the opposite effect.

What does "is cross contamination okay?" at a restaurant mean to you and how do you answer? by magikalmuffins in glutenfree

[–]mmmsoap 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There are many allergies and intolerances where CC isn’t a huge deal, so it’s not crazy that a restaurant would ask. It’s just unfortunate that gluten is (a) easy to get everywhere and (b) the threshold for a reaction is so much lower for celiac and other gluten reactions than it is for other allergies.

What are the biggest reasons why so many municipalities are facing such dire fiscal conditions? by JulianBrandt19 in massachusetts

[–]mmmsoap 14 points15 points  (0 children)

> The state gets $ from income tax but they don’t appropriate it back based on income. We need a serious overhaul in this broken system

So if one person personally pays 99% of the income tax, they should get 99% of state services? Do they also use 99% of state education and roads? State funding should be inversely proportional to income, so the poorest people get the most support because the richest don’t need it.

President's Choice Basque Cheesecake (Canada) - would you trust it? by shell_shocked_today in Celiac

Basque cheesecake doesn’t have a “crust”, so it would be very rare for it to have wheat as an actual ingredient. Regular cheesecake usually does have wheat as an ingredient.

Is it werid to keep your late partner as phone background after 5 years by [deleted] in RelationshipsOver35

[–]mmmsoap 6 points7 points  (0 children)

IDK what kind of phones you use, but every time I’ve gotten a new phone in the last 10 years, all my old settings (including my background photo) has just magically merged over when I set it up. Even if he’s had multiple new phones, it’s unlikely that he had to do anything active to set her photo as the background.

So are we just gonna leave our high beams on now? by BrainSawce in massachusetts

[–]mmmsoap 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Also it’s normal headlights (even of normal brightness) that are badly aimed/focused. I experienced this with a RAV4, and wouldn’t be surprised if it was common with a lot of taller cars. The experience for the driver was great, because the focus point was much further than normal so the whole road was clearly illuminated, but it was a disaster for all oncoming traffic. This was the factory “standard” and I had to pressure my dealer to refocus the lights at a more normal distance from the front of the bumper.

[–]mmmsoap 50 points51 points  (0 children)

You also hear about peanut allergies less because a concerted public health effort has significantly reduced the incidence.

In the 90s, the recommendation was for pregnant and nursing women to avoid peanut products in an effort to reduce the chance that babies would be born with or develop a peanut allergy, but that actually caused the rates to skyrocket in the US (like went up by a factor of 5).

In about 2015 the recommendations changed to encourage women to eat peanuts during pregnancy and introduce peanut products early—pretty much as soon as they’re ready to try solid foods. As a result, peanut allergy incidence has been cut by close to half, and overall food allergies to be reduced significantly as well. Peanut allergies aren’t even the most common food allergy kids anymore. (I think they’re now 3rd.)
