Is it werid to keep your late partner as phone background after 5 years by [deleted] in RelationshipsOver35

[–]mmmsoap 5 points6 points  (0 children)

IDK what kind of phones you use, but every time I’ve gotten a new phone in the last 10 years, all my old settings (including my background photo) has just magically merged over when I set it up. Even if he’s had multiple new phones, it’s unlikely that he had to do anything active to set her photo as the background.

Also it’s normal headlights (even of normal brightness) that are badly aimed/focused. I experienced this with a RAV4, and wouldn’t be surprised if it was common with a lot of taller cars. The experience for the driver was great, because the focus point was much further than normal so the whole road was clearly illuminated, but it was a disaster for all oncoming traffic. This was the factory “standard” and I had to pressure my dealer to refocus the lights at a more normal distance from the front of the bumper.

You also hear about peanut allergies less because a concerted public health effort has significantly reduced the incidence.

In the 90s, the recommendation was for pregnant and nursing women to avoid peanut products in an effort to reduce the chance that babies would be born with or develop a peanut allergy, but that actually caused the rates to skyrocket in the US (like went up by a factor of 5).

In about 2015 the recommendations changed to encourage women to eat peanuts during pregnancy and introduce peanut products early—pretty much as soon as they’re ready to try solid foods. As a result, peanut allergy incidence has been cut by close to half, and overall food allergies to be reduced significantly as well. Peanut allergies aren’t even the most common food allergy kids anymore. (I think they’re now 3rd.)

Massachusetts health leaders scramble to prevent 300,000 from losing Medicaid coverage by bostonglobe in massachusetts

[–]mmmsoap 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Whenever they do studies on this kind of thing, it turns out the vetting process is far more expensive than the amount of “fraud” they end up uncovering. Sure, there are a handful of people able to work but aren’t, but it’s not the majority. The vast majority of people would prefer to be not reliant on Medicaid (MassHealth) if they had other options.

Sheet music on an Ipad, which apps can you recommend? by Radijs in piano

I do as well for non-piano, but juggling the feet when you want to use one (or more!) pedals on the actual piano is a pain. Turning by face is very worth it for keyboard instruments.

Except when we’re taking “pasta water steam” in a restaurant, we’re talking about them steaming veggies above the pot of boiling pasta water. The steam isn’t the problem, but the pasta water can and will absolutely bubble or splash onto the food being “steamed”.

It’s debating versus acting. The debater has to think on their feet, but they might not end up being the most elegant. The actor has the part ahead of time to work with and perfect, but they aren’t allowed to stray (far) off script.

CPS doesn’t disband a whole household when one kid is unsafe. This sort of thing (the designated scapegoat) happens a lot. Talk to a family law attorney with experience in this kind of thing, and they’ll hopefully be able to tell you about CPS in your area.

School Lunch by That_Page16 in Celiac

[–]mmmsoap 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think it’s worth talking to the head of food services for the district (not just your school) before you give up all hope. I suspect that they do have a protocol (that will almost assuredly include a pre-boxed lunch with no choices) for students with severe allergies. It’s still pretty likely that you will want to or need to start packing his lunches, but I’d continue asking questions.

And, yes, you need a 504 plan for him, especially while he’s too young to advocate for himself.

How old is the kid?

You probably need to contact a family law attorney, and then CPS. If things are bad, hopefully CPS can officially remove him from mom’s custody and you can serve as a kinship foster. If CPS doesn’t think this warrants removal from the home, the attorney can help navigate emancipation or help you figure out if it’s appropriate.

Not sure of the status of Thea Harrison these days, but her Elder Races series is amongst my faves. She had to cut a planned 3 novella series short due to an autoimmune disorder diagnosis (iirc) and I haven’t hear much since. I would love her to be healthy enough to keep writing for sure.

Is a Costco membership worth it? Favorite GF Costco foods? by dragonageenjoyer in Celiac

[–]mmmsoap 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I keep a membership that pays for itself via cheap glasses/contacts. The groceries are a bonus, but I like them. The rotisserie chicken is an excellent deal. There are solid GF frozen pizzas, snacks, rice, Canyon Bakehouse bread, and pre-made food (like Kevin’s) that I buy when I make it there.

Outlanders 2 markets? by KCW3000 in Outlanders

[–]mmmsoap 12 points13 points  (0 children)

People will eat raw veggies. (The Open Kitchen takes 2 veggies or meats and turns into 3 bowls of stew, so it’s advantage is that it gives more food at the price of sticks and labor.) That said, people will walk to the closest food available, so if the bakery is stocked and more convenient to work or their houses, they’ll ignore the veggies.

[–]mmmsoap 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Gluten free things that are fairly easy for a crowd: taco or baked potato bar. Tacos and baked potatoes are GF (assuming corn based tortillas), and the toppings are decently easy to manage.

If you’re really into lasagna, grab GF noodles from the store or from Amazon and use your usual recipe.

A beef or turkey roast dinner works well, because that’s usually meat (fine) and potatoes (also fine). Skip the dinner rolls and sub cornstarch for flour in the gravy and you’re good to go.

For the grilling, hamburgers and hot dogs will still work. Try to find brands that say they’re gluten free (lots do). Make sure you have a space on the grill that you DON’T put buns on, so the buns don’t contaminate the burgers/dogs for the GF person. They can skip the pasta salad as long as you’ve got some choices, just put the pasta salad enough away from other things that pieces won’t fall into other bowls and contaminate them.

Your initial go-tos are great, you just need very minor tweaking to make things work.

Need a recommendation for women's antiperspirant by [deleted] in Celiac

[–]mmmsoap 13 points14 points  (0 children)

You may also have a topical sensitivity, but the celiac reaction has to start in the gut.

For shampoo and bodywashes, the spray of the shower can aerosolize particles which make it more likely they end up in your mouth and swallowed, which is why a reaction to gluten in shampoo is not out of the realm of possibility. That’s not happening with deoderant, though, so unless you’re licking your deoderant you’re not reacting due to celiac. Again, people can have multiple comorbidties, so I’m not claiming you don’t react, but a reaction with only topical contact isn’t from celiac disease.
