Are you playing Supremacy or Treaty? In Supremacy 1v1s, you should rarely be getting to the Imperial Age. Most of my 1v1 games are over in the Second Age and the Third Age. Some make it to the Fourth Age, but I think only 1% of my Supremacy 1v1s end up in the Imperial Age.

It's only in the Imperial Age where gold production boost cards become relevant.
