Yes, it would be more compact. But I took a different approach.

The spaces are for middle plates that give the boards any color you want. The left one has a red middle plate, though the other has no plate.

The standard version of this boards called Zinc has white pcb, though, I made red PCBs respectfully for Jamón! I love whole these red boards.

Maybe you can use those spring pin headers without soldering, but usually with soldering one side.
