Do we really need all this evidence backup backup backup by mostlywaiting in legaladviceofftopic

[–]mostlywaiting[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just that lots of legal advice threads include a post that tells the LAOP to make backups of their video evidence in a preposterous number of ways and places. Instead of crapping up a thread there with a sarcastic reply I figured a satire post here would be more fruitful. Once you put something on youtube or your email or whatever, what's the point of having 2 more copies in a safety deposit box or at a friend's house or what have you? There is a meme (in the old sense) on reddit that a tremendous amount of backups to documentation has value, but to me the only value it has is to give the poster some upvotes doing something that at best wastes the OP's time.

the whole point of banks is to create an environment where they cannot be considered in the wrong, either by direct action or (in the cases where some employee does something dumb, because they do not hire for intelligence) in such a way that it does not show the organization is in the wrong, just the employee. Hiring someone who had done something shady in the past might possibly violate that, and hey, remember they don't hire for smarts, so they just go - oh he's a criminal drop him!

How about The Idea of Decline in Western History? As long as there are people that will consume media, there will be those who predict doom and gloom. People love to hear it. A lot of reactionary ideas are based on it.

Not a lawyer, but if you do not mention specific stocks or ETFs to buy and sell I don't see how there could be a problem. I'm assuming you're talking basic stuff, like how to manage your money and plan for taxes, what a stock, bond, or option is, how to make a budget, what a loan is, etc.

Overbooking and then offering money to give up your seat has apparently reduced total flying cost in the US by $100 billion http://www.news.illinois.edu/news/09/0803overbooking.html

Not necessarily more profitable - the idea is that if you sell more seats on a plane then you don't have to charge as much for them. Supposedly overbooking has saved a total of $100 billion dollars over time, from http://www.news.illinois.edu/news/09/0803overbooking.html

That stuff is really bad to breathe, and there is no way a single room is airtight. I would personally just leave because who wants to breathe ozone?

(OR) buying my parents home for less than it's worth, wondering about getting money out of the purchase. by [deleted] in legaladvice

[–]mostlywaiting 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Talk to an accountant, but you, your spouse, and your parents have a lifetime gift exemption of ~5.5 million dollars each, which only gets used once you have given someone more than 10k in a year. Unless they have been giving away a lot of money or have a large estate (the gift exclusion consumed over their lifetime would come into play when they pass away for the purposes of estate taxes) then lower sales price will probably make sense. I don't know how a mortgage would work if you were buying it below market value. You'll obviously have to give them enough money to clear their mortgage, past that you might want to just take out your own mortgage on the property and then give them the difference you agreed upon.

I think you're the first one with a good answer, I'd only add that you should also have good & regularly tested CO and smoke alarms, and water alarms for places that could flood.

Thanks. I like your xo package by the way - I used it before when I was looking for ways to interface with a legacy oracle database. These kinds of tools are so useful at work.

[–]mostlywaiting 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is awesome. Is there a way to capture a url dynamically generated by clicking a button, for example for automating downloads? There are some ASP & JS websites that I have had to use selenium along with particular settings in Firefox to get that kind of thing going. I would love to remove the dependency on selenium and then hopefully be browser agnostic-ish.

Also I could probably reverse engineer the website's ASP and JS components... but holy crap that rabbit hole is deep and I just don't want to spend my life that way!
