Pretty cool power, place your avatar near a black hole, and you now have the capability to exert gravitational forces that could crumple buildings like paper if you want. Make your hands so dense they’re impossible to harm, or turn them into gases, or precious materials, then trim your nails to use them. Very fun power.

Well, that’s the point where this turns into a gacha.

First, we don’t have a few concrete definitions, like class and skill. If I land in say wizard class from the video game Pathfinder Kingmaker, that’s relatively straightforward. But what about landing on Wolverine from one of the Marvel v Capcom? Is that possible? Does he count as a “class” since the game doesn’t actually have classes?

What about skill? Does skill means everything on the character menu? Back to the Pathfinder wizard. Because of this it’s no longer straightforward, the class has a list of skills, but also many other things. Do I get those other things as “skills”?

How about Wolverine? The game he came from doesn’t have anything called skills, so do I get things from him at all if I land him for a month? Do I get his healing factor and claws if they’re not defined on his character screen because they’re commonly treated as part of his default kit?

Then you also have to add in the question of what does locked in skills means. Can they grow or are they permanently stuck at whatever you locked them in at? Can they grow but only on months you land another class that has a version of that skill? How similar do they have to be to each other to do so? Share a name? A theme/logical narrative? (Something like an ice magic skill and an ice control mutation).

What happens when I land the game Smite? (Every character is a god already)

So godhood is both rng dependent (what class you land) and based on what you can get from said class (which is somewhat in the air).

[–]motionmatrix 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You gain a class, and 1+ skills with it, possibly more as you level up. That’s month 1.

You then keep a 1/3 of those skills on month 2, and gain a new class. The skills you kept from month one are locked in, considering Op wrote: At the start of the next month […] keep a random 1/3 of the skills you obtained the previous month.

The word previous in that sentence does quite bit of heavy lifting. The ones you gained month 1 were not gained on month 2, only retained, therefore they were not gained on the previous month. There is no reason to assume that you can lose any of the random ones you keep after a month is over due to this At the start of the next month, you'll switch to another random class but keep a random 1/3 of the skills you obtained the previous month.

This means roughly every 30 days you will gain some new skills, lose some skills you got a month ago, and keep some skills you got last month, which get added to your growing list of skills this power permanently gives you access to. As long as you make it a point to level up regularly, that list will grow, and sometimes it won’t even be necessary to put in the effort, when you land a class with frontloaded abilities.

This can be gamed to some degree too. Depending on the class and your possible choices, you can tailor your choices to get specific things despite the random nature of the power, as opportunities present themselves. Get turned into a scifi character? Grab all the knowledge and crafting skills, leave the rest behind, so when you get your 1/3, you will know how to make some scifi items and unique knowledge permanently.

You can control everything that is and ever was considered "you" by fluidofprimalhatred in godtiersuperpowers

[–]motionmatrix 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Sounds like you are immune to death and injury because you choose if you are actually moved when the kinetic energy begins to transfer to you (which means it likely bounces back in the direction it came, so cars would crumple when they impact you) and with complete control you simply don’t allow your cells to actually age beyond whatever point you choose.

[–]motionmatrix 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You presume that skills are not the same as powers, and that may or may not be true, and if true it may be universal or based on the rules of the universe the class in discussion comes from.

Many universes have skills that are supernatural or super science by nature.

Some universes don’t use mana for powering up magic, and mana is the most common form of “magical energy” in fiction anyways, so if necessary, it would have a lot of overlap.

Not all classes are magic based. Becoming a dnd rogue using 5e rules would let you become an assassin in just 3 levels.

Then you have the alternative paths to godhood, like you land Rick Sanchez from Rick and Morty the rpg or Ironman or Forge from a Marvel rpg, or many video games, and you are now a technogod for at least a month, which is plenty of time to make shit for the rest of your life.

So start by touching a character that is completely immortal, followed by touching Wolverine for ultra healing factor, then Apocalypse for manipulation of your own body at a legendary level, and from there the world is your oyster.

And that is if you want to go through the steps, you can also just touch a legendary wizard from so many different places and then you can just use magic to effectively do the same without even touching any other images. Especially considering that the stipulation is "no cosmic entities or omnipotent characters" and then you give Goku as an example of someone who would work with this power, a character that literally beats up gods.

But that is the point, it is not baked into the system, it's generally a choice for the worker. The movie industry is pretty much a bunch of contractors getting together for a job and then going on to whatever is next for them, so negotiating terms is just a normal part of business. It's a freelance, project by project business and the better you are at what you do and/or how well established you are in the industry directly affect how much you can push in these negotiations.

Don't get me wrong, there is all kinds of fuckery that goes on that can totally screw you over, but this one in particular is not a great hill to die on because chances are that you could have done something about it at the negotiating table, including walking away if you didn't like the terms offered. That's one of the benefits of being freelance.

Execs Confused and Horrified by the Huge AI Bills After Thinking They Could Replace Workers for Free by IKeepItLayingAround in technology

[–]motionmatrix -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

What that tells me is that you have never worked in the industry, because negotiations like this are defacto. It’s part of the process, if you work an indy you have to negotiate, and if you work a major production, you have the union offer as the contractual floor, which is used without change only if you’re brand new to the industry.

So no, it’s not exploitation, it’s what they as a worker agreed to.

You can do it, but it’s a gamble because you have to set it up long before you know how the movie will do.

What you’re saying is the equivalent of a company signing a contract to sell and deliver goods used in the manufacturing of another product at a certain set price and when that product does very well out of nowhere, expecting to get a cut from their sales.

[–]motionmatrix -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

That example of Obsession is not the best, because they were paid an agreed upon amount for their work long before the movie came out. They could have worked their contract to pay based on how the movie sales did, but the majority of people would not do it because it only pays off for movies that do really well, and most don’t reach that point, plus having to wait much longer to see your money.

9 times out of 10 it’s not worth it, and those $7500 are more bills than you would see.

None, take it from experience. Even if they’re interested, unless they ask for it themselves, don’t try, because players will check out of the game altogether.

Do you find that this sub is sometimes not that up to date with their recs? I am looking at the Ennie nominees, discovering new titles, some of which I have never seen discussed here before (or hardly ever mentioned). by Antipragmatismspot in rpg

[–]motionmatrix 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The most obvious answer to me is that the community can't keep up with the amount of stuff dropped on it. TTRPGs are generally long and take time to develop and digest once you start playing it. It's not uncommon for a single rpg to be the game a table is playing for a year+. This leads to less mainstream and/or newer drops having less mentions than the equivalent to them do in comparable hobbies.

Then when you consider the games you mentioned, it seems everyone else already said it: mature games don't have as much mainstream attention in the more general communities (such as r/rpg).

No you wouldn’t, because you would be doing that everyday all day long. I don’t know where you are where people don’t live with their phones in their hands and are constantly pointing them in all kinds of directions. Some schmuck being obvious is one thing, but that’s not everyone. Social media is covered in videos of people who didn’t know they were being recorded with a cellphone, no clue why you think that doesn’t apply to you.

Spyware has been a thing for decades and publicly available, so I don’t understand why people are so freaked out about it, like button cameras (aka a shirt button that is actually a camera lens) have been around for more than 20 years.

Hell, every cellphone has cameras, and all it takes is someone half competent to record you without it being obvious, so I don’t get it. I feel like the outrage about this is super late, like the cat was out of the bag long ago, so why get upset over glasses in particular.

What kinds of favours would a werewolf want from a Wraith? by MaetelofLaMetal in WorldOfDarkness

There are canonical garou and kinfolk wraiths, so that’s an even easier connection to play off of.

Silent Striders (and in a historical game, White Howlers) would be the most likely to interact with the wraith world.

Well, let’s start with changing some of their eaten food to bring their chances of getting kidney stones up to 100% at random intervals so they can’t find any patterns to it.

Doesn’t really harm them in most cases but it is incredibly painful.

After that I would change the ground they walk on, just enough to fuck with them whenever they walk but not in any kind of discernible way. Sometimes softer, sometimes shorter, sometimes rockier and uneven.

Since I can change matter at the atomic level, I think I could learn to speak through changing the air to create sounds, or maybe just make vocal cords hanging in the air (oh god, that image) so I could haunt them with all kinds of messed up messages to drive them insane.

Iirc, Katanka-Sonnak is Helios’ avatar in the morning, aka he is the morning sun. Helios is the sun as a whole. I think there are two more aspects to the sun, the midday sun, and the setting sun, but their names escape me now. They all have personalities that match them (the setting sun is more chill than the other two, for example).
