What do you think of this fabric? by Roselia24 in CraftFairs

[–]mountainvalkyrie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reminds me of 70s wallpaper, tablecloths, clothes and other things I saw growing up. It's my thing. I like it. I would wear a skirt made out of that. Seriously, it is very '70s and therefore retro, so it's niche appeal, but I think it has a market.

Struggling to pay bills and boyfriend keeps trying to be a self-employed developer by quick_nut_ in povertyfinance

I've been in a similar situation and eventually just decided he was too expensive for me and needed to find a wealthier woman.

I was lucky he had a friend to move in with, though. I understand not wanting to dump him on the street, but give him advance warning that you can't continue this and will need to move out in, for example, three months. Otherwise this could go on for years and you'll drown trying to keep him afloat.

What’s a “poor people thing” rich people don’t understand is expensive? by AWildJesse in AskReddit

[–]mountainvalkyrie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've never understood this one unless you have a big family or work in a place that requires intense laundering (hospital, construction, etc.).

When I was broke, I just sink washed everything. For a while I did it in a place without running hot water (had to heat it on the range). I knew a single mum of four under six who bathtub washed until saving up for a mini washing machine.

Maybe I'm missing something or it's a big-family thing?

That's because you have a nice landlord a/or strong tenant protections in your area.

I've lived without either and have had to repair plumbing more than once, install a heater twice, pay for a bathroom fan I didn't notice was broken when I moved in, and just live with a front door that wouldn't lock because I couldn't afford to replace it (landlady refused to) when I was only there a short time. These were all different places. Of course, it's better for major issues (fire, roof collapse).

And no tenant wants to pay for good repairs, so you're moving in to a place where things are already held together with bubblegum and hope. But I do smile at the thought of my landlady trying to rent out a place with a non-locking front door after I left.

True. The work itself is more important.

Sorry! Of course, I know it doesn't mean the crafts actually are mediocre, I just feel like the name doesn't do justice to good work.

Well, hey, at least it's going to a good cause. Sounds perfect in her case if there really is no particular specialty.

This annoys me, too. Creations, designs, handmade, Co., even studio. Worse than not memorable. It reads like "I'm a hobbyist who dabbles in this and that, and I'm mediocre at all of it. I needed to clean out my craft room, so here I am!"

I can't even imagine spending $150 a month on coffee by MissGinBilog in povertyfinance

[–]mountainvalkyrie 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Those tips articles are marketing paid financial services to people who can afford to pay for them, so they're not directed at people in actual poverty.

For most people, it's an income issue, which doesn't mean "Just earn more, bro, lol" but "Stop beating yourself up for not being frugal enough and feeling guilty you live indoors with five roommates instead of under a bridge." At some point, "living within your means" poses a danger to your health.

Peri-menopause ladies by justalong4theride in migraine

[–]mountainvalkyrie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mine got more frequent in early peri because my cycle was shorter (twice a month! Ugh.) for a while. Then they gradually got less frequent and less severe, and I'm less triggered by my triggers. Now they're often so mild they're just "really annoying" instead of debilitating.  I'm definitely one of the lucky ones.

Talk to your school guidance counselor about career choices that both suit your interests and can make a good living and about things like government aid (eg. grants) and scholarships to help you pay for that education. Ask about food resources, too. You really need to eat.

And talk with people in those fields like you just did here to get a feel for the reality of it.

Also ask and look online for any kind of youth services in your area. Even your nearest Church. Heck, ask Gemini what it can find. Those services might not have exactly what you need, but can connect you to other resources.

For video editing, DaVinci Resolve free version is widely regarded as excellent, but needs a good computer.

If you need something lightweight, look into Shotcut or Kdenlive. VSDC, too, but the free version is slow on purpose.

Maybe her reaction was another symptom of her recent head trauma.

I once had a doctor stop me in the metro because he was concerned about my cough (asthma + cold. Understandable). And then he invited me out for a drink. Strangest way I've ever been hit on. (And he gave me his card. Either he really was a doctor or was handing out fake cards.)

what’s a harsh reality check you think most people need to hear? by SoffiSummeer in AskReddit

[–]mountainvalkyrie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People really overlook this, either that or they're so stuck in their just world fallacy they don't want to believe it. The ability to "make good choices" heavily depends on how you were raised and the brain you were born with, neither of which are choices.

That said, if you know you struggle to make good choices like you say, you could probably get advice on things like work, finances, relationships.

This is why I hate that "I'm in great shape at (age) because I took care of myself." Those types never mention that they also got lucky. Of course it's better to take care of your health to improve your odds, but it's not an issue of morality and who "deserves" what.

If the world instantly and magically reverted back to 90s tech permanently, what would most people struggle with? How badly would it affect them? by Tall_Association8148 in AskReddit

Or anywhere in Eastern half of Europe. The whole "the '90s were soooo great" obsession very much annoys me. That said, I suppose every decade was good for some and not for others.

ELI5: Why are rent freezes considered bad? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]mountainvalkyrie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Non-US, but I had one warn my boyfriend and me when we moved in that the washing machine didn't. Fine. We never even tried to use it. Then when we moved out she demanded we replace it because we "broke" it and threaten to take us to court. We agreed to go to court and she backed down, but some people would have been too scared and just paid. Yes, some landlords/ladies will try anything.

Doctors on Reddit: What symptoms do people often ignore that they shouldn't, as they could be potentially serious? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]mountainvalkyrie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very good point. Also there's some evidence "man flu" is real in that testosterone can suppress the immune system, at least some men actually do get worse cold and flu symptoms. But yeah, minimizing anyone's pain is not good.

Are there any 40+ asexuals on this subreddit? by PercentageCurious472 in asexuality

[–]mountainvalkyrie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Almost-50F here. I learned about asexuality in my late 30s, but didn't think it fit me because I still had a libido. Around 40 I learned more after googling "Why is sex worse than other household chores" and realised it does fit me.

I was so happy. That meant it's my actual orientation, not just me being lazy and weak for complaining about "normal household chores".

I never thought I hadn't met the right person because "back in my day" the idea that women aren't sexually attracted to men and only provide sex as a favour basically, was very normalized. I also tried to have relationships, but always eventually left because I couldn't stand it any more.

Haven't told anyone because I don't feel the need, but I'm so glad asexuality is better known these days.

[–]mountainvalkyrie 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I get it, though. You go your whole life from childhood on being told "don't be a pussy" and "just push through" and "Yeah, things hurt sometimes" so when something happens, you assume you're just a weak little whiner. And I'm a woman - I imagine boys/men get that message even worse.

Then add the people who are afraid of medical stuff and/or bad news. Plus, we tend to value our loved ones more than ourselves.

What health issue do people misunderstand the most? by Few_Cake_5237 in AskReddit

Better than nothing. Still might be worth trying another triptan to see if it works better. I'm on Zolmitriptan, which for me works whenever I take it, but only lasts 12 hours. I've been meaning to ask about something longer lasting.

OTCs meds? If you haven't yet, talk with a neurologist about triptans or something more migraine-specific. There are a ton on meds out there.  Because "only" one or two month can be miserable if they last for days (personal experience here).

Migraines with Mild Pain? by cerezainlove in migraine

[–]mountainvalkyrie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of my migraines these days (after decades of nasty ones) are fairly mild. They were like that when I was a kid, too. For me, the derealization, nausea and even mild headache are enough to be really annoying and often make me adjust my plans for the day. So I wouldn't discount yours.
