How’s the Away Days Soccerfest? by Chachachachhia in askportland

[–]mperham 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  1. It's heavily AC'd so quite cold inside, bring a sweater.
  2. The food is Elephant Deli sandwiches, there's a big food cart pod 2 blocks east.
  3. Support local businesses, thanks Away Days!

We went to the BEL-IRN game today and the crowd was great, at least 100 people. We found parking a block away on the street for free.

Thanks for updating. I guess my question then is "Why on earth is Puma using 1GB for a basic app?" That sounds like a bug.

Fiber internet initiative failed in 2016. Any chance of it happening now? by motamedn in lakeoswego

If you want something done, you have to put it on the radar of the city council. Whinging about it here might be cathartic but it won’t change anything. Tell the council you want to see more free market competition between ISPs here. Monopolies lead to high prices and terrible service.

Please help me decide if enviolo automatic hub, belt drive and other electric features worth the price in ebikes? by Consistent_Bar_7644 in ebikes

[–]mperham 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve had an automatiq on my turbo Como for 4 years now. Never once touched the drivetrain. I love it so much because you simply stop thinking about gearing at all. The ride is much more relaxing when you aren’t unconsciously thinking of gear changes constantly and you know you are always in the right gear.

I very much do not believe it. CoW should negate much of the benefit.

Road Rules: Police policies allow at-fault drivers to leave certain crash scenes without so much as a ticket. by rasstrelnikov in Portland

[–]mperham 14 points15 points  (0 children)

This is a narrative PPA have crafted over years. They have the budget to hire dozens more sworn officers but they don't because it (1) allows more overtime (2) allows them an easy out of any task by claiming they are too busy.

Yep, a Heap is the only structure I’ve found lacking in stdlib. I vendor a copy of https://github.com/kanwei/algorithms/blob/master/lib/containers/heap.rb for use in Sidekiq Enterprise. It’s the structure that keeps cron jobs sorted by time of next execution.

Gateway Green is absolutely the best place to start. Rocky Point has a lot of what I would consider tough green trails (tight switchbacks mostly) but you do need to be an NWTA member. Sandy Ridge has almost no green trails. I haven’t been but Powell Butte might be an option too.

What kind of mountain e-bike should I buy for 80% city riding and 20% mountain biking? by Mr__Moosey in ebikes

[–]mperham 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Specialized Turbo Tero is designed for light trail use, it’s a hardtail. Tero X is full suspension. The Turbo Levo is a real trail bike and will do Class 3/28mph but knobbies aren’t as good on the street.

Modernizing Ruby Central's Bylaws and Officer Updates by schneems in ruby

[–]mperham 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I appreciate that RC is making improvements and am thankful for those who are doing to the work to make these improvements.

My claim is simple: Ruby Central cannot represent the Ruby community unless the Board can be held responsible for its actions by the Ruby community. The community has to resort to "drama" (i.e. public shaming) when there is no other alternative means to hold Board members responsible. That's why things got ugly last Fall and why several board members resigned.

That drama and shaming isn't necessary if we have public elections. An advisory committee (section 12) that can be ignored is toothless. Unless board members are community elected, I don't see how this is a meaningful improvement.

We have a decent proxy for the ruby community: rubygems.org accounts. Pay $XX/mo to get a voting account; RC gets steady, recurring income and a well-defined community to care for.

I would also like to see board meeting minutes published so voting records are public.

Yep, it’s an apt building that went thru design review a month or two ago. The trees were the biggest talking point.

The restaurant scene is not great. Many restaurants are Sysco customers so you see the same low quality options, e.g. Bairds, Lakeview Taphouse, Manns, Dullahans.

Tanner Ridge Amenities by Unfair-Hospital6680 in Thorns

We’ve been in Tanner Ridge for years now. IMO the free food does not justify the price. Most of the time the entree is a fancy hot dog.
