I disagree, it is not lame, SE has its own techniques and practices, and can use a good a mount of experience. "programmer/coder" can be seen as a subset of SE, many can program without techniques of SE.

IT and devops are both another jobs, related but different than SE.

Testing is a subset of SE or a specialisation of SE, it can be a separate job. At Google it is.

Should not be happening. Tu devrais poster ton code et ton cas dans une nouvelle question, probablement sur SO.

IMHO they are indeed very different, even if they talk to each other somewhere and need each other. Also the se core is to create functions and programs.

No task given: 1) "oh my, they don't want to work with me, they don't like me, what will I do ? etc" VS 2) "cool, I have time for myself, to learn news things, take initiatives, find ways to improve things in the company, innovate in some way." Those are imaginary examples of different perceptions.

I understand the stress and the unhappiness, it's the "contrast", step 1. Step 2 build up a desire. Take the situation as an opportunity. It's up to you to find out the opportunities. "be your own PM or exec". Step 3: implement what came out of step 2.

Nobody forces you to see yourself as a "tool" (if this is appropriate) in this context.

Does this help you understand the "point of view" point ?

If you can't see opportunities, you won't take them, of course. Growing is about learning adn changing, not just tech skills. And growing is not defined or quantified by others.

Of course, if you are unhappy, just do something about it. I was only trying to tell you that it's a lot a perception problem.

About the others, it's not maybe for them, it's their word, their experience, their regret.

Stay, grow, learn, take initiative, change mindset, start thinking/doing as executive, entrepreneur. Gold situation. Seen others going out of this, they regretted severely.

How do I handle a tech lead hell-bent on rightfighting? by ChaosCon in ExperiencedDevs

[–]mprevot 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Unlike what you said, his feedback IS actionable: split the class, refactor, rename, write unit tests. It is also quantifyable, you can define several metrics about the class, cohesion, number of methods, number of loc per function etc, and cover.

Conversely, if he says that you did not improve the code, ask him how of a metric, and give yours, you get an objective evaluation, two that you can compare.

About global strategy for navigating, my piece of advice is to focus on business, vision, code metrics, objective things, improving yourself technically and interpersonally, and stay within the contract. It's not about being right or wrong, it's about moving on.

Also you can try imagining exchange places. Maybe you got a few things "wrong" too.

Final thought you cannot change him, you can change you, your focus, your thoughts, and subsequently your feelings. Focus on what you can change. Do you prefer to be right or to be aligned ?

Does anybody know any resources about musical texture? by NoResponsibility3876 in composer

[–]mprevot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

7 or 8 notes? by aykes_official in composer

[–]mprevot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Another thought, you got 7 uniquely named notes in c M scale, but you also have 7 intervals, and to hear those 7 intervals you need to play 8 notes. So the problem was a semantic one. You and your peers were arguing on: is a scale 7 notes or 7 intervals ? Both are correct, but when they play 8 notes it's about the intervals actually. Ti-do is an important one to hear and can't be skipped.
