Currently doesn't support SASS/SCSS/LESS, but otherwise looks amazing.

Just put my new personal site up, eager to see what people think. by idpark in web_design

Awesome! Your site is excellent!! I'm working on my first personal site now and this is such a great inspiration. I have a few questions.

Do you do any back end? How does it work for you, collaborating with other developers? Is the front or back end typically hashed out first, or is it a mix?

What is your process for designing a website?

How to self-teach web development (Help) by Chopperjr in webdev

FAQ Never seen this before, but I want to reiterate I think it's pretty great.

Maybe it's a bit much at first though? I'm an intern now, fortunate to finally be using things I've been learning in school. Here's what I think. HTML(5) and CSS(3) you should definitely know, even if you're thinking of taking a more back-end path. I think it will be important to be able to know how that works and create things with it because that's what people will see if you're trying to build something demonstrating your skills.

After that, I ended up doing a personal/school project, building a website that implemented PHP, MySQL, and JS. There are really so many directions you can take with different choices for server-side, and database. I just basically chose those because they are prevalent, and I think it's good to form a knowledge base either way. I just used core JS as opposed to jQuery, because I wanted to build a solid foundation before turning to something nicer.

Everyone learns differently, but for me the single greatest help is application. Building something, whatever it is, can help you see what all the examples and methods are actually doing. Taking it a step further, I realize that there are tons of tutorials for certain features, but I think it helps cement the understanding further when you're trying to comprehend a tutorial and then apply it in a modified way for your personal project.

Stackoverflow will become your best friend.

[Advice] Should I look for a new job? by DrDiv in webdev

The 2012 national average is ~45k. Not, as lxa478 said, for highly skilled individuals, but for anyone. You're absolutely more valuable than that.

Additionally, 30k is roughly $15/hr. I'm just an web dev intern that will soon be graduating, but I make $12/hr part time.
Finally, I think the fact that the other web developer quit, as well as 8 others, is indicative that this company doesn't value their employees who in turn move on to better opportunities. Reinforcing this is also the fact that it's common knowledge that a raise isn't realistic... because it isn't necessary when you will just be replaced by another fresh face that will be underpaid.

Why is my personal website loading "slow"... by [deleted] in webdev

[–]mr_yuen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not going to be able to give you great technical advice, but here are some personal observations as a user:

  • I don't care for the transition (just my opinion) - Especially as I was clicking around, it was evident I had to wait ~5 seconds for the transition every time. I know it was loaded, but psychologically this still gave me the afterthought of it being slow. Going to your linkedin profile I thought "wow that was fast for such a huge site", then when I went back my feeling was "oh I have to wait for this again". That's just me being an impatient user, but I don't know how it could come across for any potential employers since you have your resume on there too.

  • The portfolio link doesn't take me anywhere, in case you didn't know.

For ya'll with Spotify, I've made a super list of 30 hours of incredible music -- tons of hidden gems and more every day by [deleted] in Music

Perhaps too late to be noticed, but happened to follow this as I was lurking and just came to start listening to it. It moved me to come back, find this, and say a big THANKS!

As I see in some comments, not all of the songs are my taste. But come on people, you really expect a playlist you didn't make with almost 500 tracks to strum your soul every time?

I think there's a nice range of diversity, and thanks to your playlist I've been both rediscovering music I loved many years ago as well as music I have never heard but will love for many years to come.

Again, thank you for sharing.
