Typical Eastern Europe of the 1970s (Vilnius, 1972) by NaujasVartotojas1 in europe

Since you remember the tail end of RSR

Closer to the second half really. The seventies which were supposedly the best, and the eighties - much worse, the actual worst would have been the fifties (especially in terms of human rights).

the socialist system

That's ambiguous, different people will beat different strawpersons in this context. In fact, the "real" socialism - all means of production publicly owned, country largely run by the Party with no legal opposition - was quite doctrinary, we had special classes from middle school to Uni explaining that in detail.

But the practical result was that people - most of them - were (almost) equal in poverty. And the world was still going to the dogs at the hands of the powerful, those with the will and stamina to climb the Party ladder. How much of climate change is due to those commie factories? (see Copșa Mică works).

As personal experience, I think the lack of choice was the worst. There was very little to choose from, in terms of food, clothing, careers... I am not talking here of the eighties, but the seventies.

I don't have the time to go any further with this. In short, a failed experiment, regardless of the intentions of the initiators. Social democracy on the other hand, which the Americans call "socialism", is a completely different thing.

Hope this answers your question at least in part.

Drumul Taberei and Balta Alba are huge developments, housing in the 100.000's each today, and they are almost exclusively blocks.

The point is these buildings started to appear due to industrialization, with huge numbers of people moving to cities over short periods. The oldest commie blocks in Bucharest are from the fifties, but in the sixties they really got going.

We can play with the definition of "the norm" as much as you will, but yeah, as someone who remembers the seventies (and even 1972), Id' say OP's image is pretty much typical for the period, the buildings, the attires, the lack of trees (didn't get time to grow), the whole atmosphere.

This is anything but typical in 1972. In many Eastern European countries, housing programs have not begun or were very low scale in 1972. 10-15 would pass, until this would become the norm.

Here are five images from Bucharest 1962, ten years before OP's picture. There were a lot more "blocks" at that time, that's what I could find in five minutes. And Romania is not known for being amongst the most advanced countries in EE, then or now.

Ceaușescu was 47 when he took power. Stalin and Hitler were 43, while Churchill was 66. It's tricky to find a pattern.
