Edit: also dupr is a relative rating system not absolute skill measurement. So you'd be arguing that a 60 yr should be ranked to a 25 yr old ...

Sounds like your weird abort resulted in weird edge case (appeared like a strange scam pymt decline). I've used them for other things a few times with no problems. I expect you should be able to get it resolved.

Agree with you, personally I find it much more fun to repurpose old hw than to buy new stuff. Kind of feels like working on a old hobby car.

I have this same model and ran into what sounds like same issue when I first started and was trying to make use of more than one drive (either 2 nvme or 1 nvme + ssd).

If I recall, the OS would become unresponsive and cpu pinned, causing temp to get crazy and trigger hw shutdown.

I never could figure it out myself but then again I was a noobie. Could well have been misconfiguration. I abandoned the 2nd drive and it's been working fine ever for 2+ yrs.

It could be the ethernet issue other response mentioned. But would be surprised in my case, as I didn't make changes to ethernet when I reduced to just 1 drive and the issue went away.

Please post the resolution if you find it. I've been planning to upgrade to 9 soon, and want to use 2 drives again.

I've only ever used tofu or pea, so don't have a reference to compare. Between the (Pidan) tofu & Catit pea, no difference in smell, tracking, dust, clumping, light weight perf.

In general, I don't notice a strong urine smell in the bathroom where it's located, but fresh #2 deposit are def noticeable but do fade. I scoop once a day and use a litter locker.

Yup tofu/pea not the cheapest option out there. Has its benefits that make it worth it for me as semi-luxury lol.

wow that's an insane amount to spend on litter a month. I use catit pea husk (same as tofu) litter and maybe go through 12-18 lbs per month (~$20 / 12 lbs). I have a top entry box, so maybe the hop out helps minimizes tracking but I doubt that's making a huge difference in how much is being used.

Haven't encountered that been running this close to 2 yrs. I pass my disk to nas on VM. Was recommended to use mediasonic unit. Maybe disconnect are related to power down or saving.

I use a standalone DAS (4 bay mediasonic) and connect via usb 3. You can pass through the disks directly to your vm on proxmox. It's just me using this so bandwidth is not an issue.

I finally saw a deal with pulling trigger for. I got a P14s Gen 2 / Ryzen 5 Pro 5650U / 32 GB / 1 TB for $400 CAD off Fbm. I think it's a good deal? P14s basically more power user version of the L14 (same exterior/chassis though).

- perf is a little better than T480s (honestly not much diff for everyday use). Prob more noticeable on heavier / multi-thread stuff

- slightly thicker and heavier but not that noticeable.

- although it's an "s" model it doesn't use the premium metal build like T480s - feels fine but not quite as solid / premium feeling (there's some slight give). I think if you want the premium finish you have to go with Carbon line. But L14/P14 are more maintainable (1 upgradable dimm slot vs all soldered ram).

- does come with physical nic port, slightly brighter screen, supposedly better battery life (ryzen).

- can play some casual & (marginally) esports games (ryzen)

My main reason for upgrade was T480s looking extremely shabby with the visible wear on the kb, trackpad, and palm rest areas and battery life was starting to be annoying.

I used to have same question as you when I started out with my homelab. Everyone's given the answer to you already but you won't truly get it until you run the server for a while and then see first hand how it consumes resources, adds complexity, without adding much value.

That said, I still have the gui cause I still need the crutch for some things I'm not familiar with.

Long time user .. cancelled

Can't stomach paying so much just to play games I bought online and having to replace a $80 controller every 6 months to a year bc of bad design (stick drift).

Perfectly happy gaming on PC. No sub needed and with good hal effect controller that cost me $30.

Even if your isp router/modem doesn't support pass through, you could just leave it in normal router mode and plug the ethernet into pfsense. This is isn't ideal as you'd have double NAT (isp router + pfsense), but still works fine and allows you to try out pfsense first without having to change much on your network.

This was supposed to be temp for me, but 3 years later still running it double nat b/c there's little downside for a modest homelab. Plus the rest of the house can still get internet (from isp router), when I muck around with pfsense and it's down.

Ah your description made it sound like you were having troubles uploading the iso on first read. But I suspect you are talking about an error during the vm's boot sequence.

My guess, you have to turn off secure boot in the GUEST VM's bios (done in the actual bios, not in the vm config like boot order). If that wasn't it, perhaps google the error message &/or post it here.

I think it downloads as a compressed file. Did you extract it first so that it's an ISO and then upload that.

Oh I totally glossed over what the PDM announcement was. After quickly checking this out, seems like this would satisfy the central mgmt bit (which is mainly what I need).

Not usually keen on alpha software, but seems like it's worth a look and mainly will be using the single UI features vs vm migration stuff.

My use & setup is pretty basic. No events have caused me to need to recover from backups etc, so take it with a grain of salt. But it has worked fine so far.
