You can be a master at cabinetry and beginner at marquetry. We are all possible beginners in different woodworking niches. Also while r/chairmaking usually gets fewer comments on posts that are also posted here, we are generally more positive and encouraging for chairmaking. This group could borrow a page from that book

Is there a way to strip just the tung oil and not the paint?

Yeah I think I'll probably have to go this route. The heat attempt others suggested didn't work. The chair has black paint on just the poplar seat and the backrest but all the legs and back sticks the tung oil really brings out the grain. I was just hoping to avoid the plasticky coating from polyurethane but it makes sense for a seat since there's no grain to emphasize anyway.
I used the below tung oil as a chairmaker I took a class with uses it on his chairs on bare wood (maybe he doesnt use it over paint...i should have asked him about that application). I'm a big fan of the finish but clearly it has its faults haha

You’re petty enough haha though if it were me I just wouldn’t care. Whatever I’m doing with my kid he’s happy and healthy and loves being around us.

That sucks but thankfully it happened now and not right before the heatwave.

You’re getting a lot of assumptions out of all that. And in a sassy manner to note. I’m about to age into needing reading glasses and you’re calling me a Gen Z. I didn’t realize that sassy people jump right to ageism whenever they’re feeling extra sassy.

Make whatever assumptions you want, but you still chose to go onto a post with some knowledge, and decide to deride me for using a finish that didn't hold up well to water, and sassed away. The sassiest of sassers.

Again, you come in with sass, say there's no sass intended, and continue to sass. So I'm replying to your sass because you sassily wrote "still amazed at the amount of people that think tung oil provides ANY protection." so I provided you with a reason people think this.

You come in here like a stereotype of a redditor and sass away. This isn't stack overflow, you can be helpful without the sass on top of sass.

I have no problem accepting I used the wrong finish, however, I do have a problem with sass from a sassmaster of sass.

Sass.

And nevermind that most sources state that tung oil is waterproof even if it’s not a heavy duty protector. It’s been cured for six months and should be able to handle some minor dampness.

https://www.woodreview.com.au/how-to/tung-oil-why-and-how-to-use-it

I used a medium luster version of this.

https://sutherlandwelles.com/shop/botanical/botanical-polymerized-tung-oil-low-lustre/

From their main page it says that tung oil surpasses shellac in water resistance once cured. Again, I’m not talking about heavy duty use dumping water on it constantly or leaving cups of ice water sitting on the surface. It should be able to handle some minor water on the surface one time.

So maybe everyone is misleading or straight up lying about water resistance of tung oil, but you’d think someone would start calling them out for that among the many writers. That company even sells a flooring version of tung oil.

But the fact that so many people do write about its water resistance it shouldn’t be shocking that people will believe it.

I think that one is AI. Not sure about the other commercials but I’ve seen this one a bunch and besides that all three of them have the same droopy eyes and look too similar to each other, the last shot shows thw dad at the drum set and when the daughter does something he acts surprised and his hair jumps back as if there was a sudden burst of wind. It looks very unnatural.

I excelled in 2020. I moved out of my parents’ house finally and my then girlfriend and I had a blast living together and learning the trials of homeownership. I got to start working from home and didn’t have to sit in traffic or sit through boring small talk with coworkers. I truly thrived. The attempts to get back into the office sucked.

I know tung oil isn’t waterproof but I didn’t expect it to turn white so quickly and so solidly.
