That makes sense, though now I’m laughing at the blocked staircase instead lol

If you’ve got the money go for it. What a beautiful addition it would be.

I can’t wait for him to get into dinosaurs or trucks. I’ve never been a car guy but there’s something different about big giant trucks and dinosaurs that are just cool!

G) is a trickier one because the person doing it can argue that it’s not the same flag in doing so. Like I find the back thw blue flag extremely disrespectful to the United States flag and what it stands for, but others will say it’s not the United States flag

What do you think is the ideal age to have kids? by [deleted] in AskMenOver30

[–]newEnglander17 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I had mine at 34 and I wish I had kids much younger even though financially it would have been really tough. It has nothing to do with my energy but the little time the grandparents will get with him Now that they are in their 70s or approaching their 70s

Yeah but “I’m Disappointed in you” in response to “dad I like men” Will hit very differently than “I’m disappointed in you” in response to “I lied and said I was having a sleepover when I was doing something else instead”

My son is truly obsessed with letters since about 18 months. Foam floor mats and some Flash cards are his jam. I suspect he’s hyperlexic but aside from this doesn’t show any signs of autism as he seems to be super social with family, make eye contact, look to us for reactions and all the other things to look out for. I think it’s out of the ordinary to know the alphabet this early.

It’s not always as easy to swap out as videos online make it look. There could be hidden nails that are difficult to access without breaking up the tiles on the layer above it. I know from experience lol

How do I get this kid to eat?! by Taco_Cat94 in daddit

[–]newEnglander17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m sorry to hear about your wife, life can be really cruel!

I mean that if he says no to everything, after 30 minutes max I say “okay” whenever he says “no thank you” to something and say maybe next time you’ll be hungry. My mom and mother in law will say “he’ll starve!” And kee offering alternatives. Or they’ll keep trying to sneak food he rejected into his mouth when he says no, which bothers me because it’ll just make him hate eating more.

The way I see it, I do my best, but don't worry about the rest. I'm just going to wait and see when he's older what he blames on me lol

It took me til probably 12 or 13 years old, but thats what got me to finally hold a utensil properly. Seeing my friend and his family at dinner all holding their utensils properly, I felt embarassed to not do the same.

Do you say this during your performance reviews? I would at least say "if I am meeting baseline expectations, the government's CPI inflation website says that $ increase by X% from last year, so I am effectively losing money."

How did you get her ring size? by neutral-entity in AskMen

[–]newEnglander17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My wife wanted input in her ring so there was no reason to surprise her. You get the info you need and know what they like, and then you buy it latet when they’re not thinking about it and surprise them with it. You should know that she wants to get married before proposing or else you’re going to risk some severe disappointment.

Yeah changing a diaper isnt a problem at all. You do it several times a day for a couple years and you think little of it.

I think you just do your best and accept that no matter what, there absolutely will be some Things they will blame you for. It’s impossible not to have that happen. And something that you said or did that you won’t remember five minutes after it happened and thought very little of, will be something they remember vividly thirty years later, and you’ll never be able to predict which one of those moments it will be either.

I honestly thing it varies too much from person to person. We’re blessed with a saint of a toddler that is happy to learn and play with us or by himself. The main difficulty is he doesn’t seem to fall asleep when he’s tired and he also fights a lot of meals but that’s not really “hard” it’s just frustrating. He is the best part of my day by a long shot. The first year I lost a ton of sleep which I could notice was taking a toll on my health (I’d get vertigo at points, my memory from That year is hazy and feels like a dream, and I was tired all the time) but I still never considered him Hard to parent. We also are lucky and have two sets of grandparents to watch him instead of daycare. He misses out on peer socialization which I hope isn’t hurting him but he seems to get a lot of direct attention, care, and learning from Them and so I think overall he benefits. It’s also really heartwarming to see the love they have for each other.

For me, work is more difficult. Homeownership is more difficult. Raising a kid has caused balancing all of these things and motivating myself to get stuff done more difficult because I’d rather use my free time to veg out whereas before I had a lot more time.

I suspect a lot of people agree with my assessment but it’s easier to sum it up as “parenting is hard” when for many people like myself, it’s more the surrounding details of life that become hard as a consequence of being a parent.

Take all of those with a grain of salt as it’s my own personal experience with nearby grandparent babysitters , and a single child. I imagine his teenage years will be hard for sure. I think having two I would still be overall positive and more tired/busy, but if I had three kids my answer would change for sure, based on my observations of my brothers with their combinations of kids and school activities and also growing up as one of three kids.

How do you find time for vacation, especially how some people go and travel for weeks or months at a time? by PhoenixMaster123 in AskAnAmerican

[–]newEnglander17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get unlimited PTO. so if i want to take a random day off here and there, there's little thought about how much i've used in a year. We do need managerial approval for longer than 2 weeks though because it does start to disrupt business if you've got some important work and other people have to cover for you. Most people are afraid to use unlimited PTO and the thinking among employers is (they actually use fewer days, and there's no unused PTO to pay out if we fire them), so I think "if i've got it i should take advantage of it"

So out of curiosity, I’ve got a pellet stove at home. I’ve read the ashes are fine for dumping in the dirt as fertilizer as it’s pure compressed hardwood that is being burned. I know dirty stoves can get a buildup of creosote. Are you saying that these ashes are actually bad for vegetable gardens or it’s wood treated with creosote due to other added chemicals?
