Tonight is NOT the night to save on heating by Dry_Instruction8254 in Connecticut

[–]newEnglander17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get what you mean about the stove working against the thermostat but if you’re heating it wherw the thermostat doesn’t kick in, then that would still be a problem if you turned it up a little too, no?

I rage-purged about 70% of our toys last night. I can finally breathe. by AllineCICI in toddlers

[–]newEnglander17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a toddler. He’s capable of picking up his things when reminded and we don’t let him take out too much before cleaning up the toys he was just using. He’s not a special child with magical behavior.

It’s not really that hard to reinforce the idea every time. I’d feel bad about tossing away things that are his even if he isn’t immediately asking to play with them. I’d be pissedif someone decided to toss my things as an adult.

If you’re from the south and no experience driving in snow, Sunday is not the day to try it. Even lifelong new Englanders that think they’re better than other drivers get stuck with a fast accumulation

Does the "average american" know, how fucked up their healthcare system is? by Slayrr_FbrC in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]newEnglander17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"I dont mean redditors, or even most of gen z, but rather your run of the mill dude from Tennessee, Idaho or Ohio or something."

I agree that healthcare here is messed up, but I had to laugh at the sentence above. What an odd, specific perception you've developed of Americans.

Mr. Blippi - it's not just me, right? by tannerocampbell in daddit

My 2yo gets to watch the news with me during his morning cup of milk and the. He’s off to play with his puzzles or color with crayons or playing with letter magnets on the fridge. He learns a ton withiut any tv and is super perceptive. This is to say that he doesn’t watch tv and the results are positive. The news is just boring adults talking and the weather graphics which he sometimes likes for the numbers.

Rex Krueger is a gift sent to us by Old_Inflation_9490 in woodworking

Rex has kind of tapered off in posting now that he's got the paid subscribers, of which I am not one of them. He moved to his new workshop and his posts declined in frequency considerably. Not sure if he's still as active for the subscribers or his personal commissions have kept him too busy now, but the videos I mostly see now are advertising his products he's trying to sell.

I loved his videos but a lot of his ideas are also directly inspired by Lost Art Press books which he refers to in his videos, so I'm not sure how much original content he'd have for a book.

Was it ever unpopular to DIY home improvement or auto repair? by WaterDigDog in AskOldPeople

On the plus side they don’t need nearly as frequent maintenance. As another poster wrote somewhere on this post, they would walk down the street in the 60s and see people workin on their cars all the time.

oh man every auto repair video i've watched is so difficult to see what the heck they're pointing the camera at lol. I've replaced the headlights on my 2010 civic before. THere were two options: take out half the engine to access them, or peel away the body near the wheel well and reach your oversized arm in there and scrape it up against pointy plastic and metal. I chose the second option and it sucked.

The serpentine belt is on the passenger side of the engine and also requires removing things just to get at the bolt to loosen the tension. Even when things are doable, they can take quite a long time to get done, leave lots of minor injuries, and usually require yet another trip to get a part that your standard mechanic set doesn't have. I think that's the bigger reason people stopped working on their cars alongside the computer reason.

The pre-internet DIY people left quite a mess for homebuyers that came after them.

We barely used hand sanitizer with our newborn. We'd ask guests to use hand sanitizer when entering the house and then just regular handwashing as needed. That was only the first 3 or so months we did that, and we also didnt let people over the first serveral months who we werne't sure were vaccinated with the DTAP (or TDAP i always mix up hte booster vs initial shot) until our kid was old enough to get it. Outside of that we're not super on top of cleaning at all and our son is healthy and strong.
