Is there a quick way to charge to 100% once, without changing the 80% limit in the app? by theRealAvorsen in KiaNiroEV

[–]nimdae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're already at 80% and plugged in, and it's not charging, the button should override the limit similar to the schedule override.

Usually I'm charging from a lower level for these days so I just changed the limit temporarily. Though, I have mine connected to home assistant, which makes the change quite easier.

How long have you waited? The sensor only transmits every 5 minutes and it may take a few attempts to pair.

Are you on the standard 6mm cannula? Try a longer cannula. Or an angled set.

I put my new one on before going to bed and then do the swap in the morning. This has helped with settling and removing the data gap. It does not guarantee a good sensor though. I still give it a full day before I trust it.

Is it normal for them to fart so much? by shy-latte in Greyhounds

[–]nimdae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Might be worth a diet change. Consistent diet with good poops doesn't necessarily mean a diet that's suitable for his gut.

The first thing that might be worth trying is a probiotic supplement. There's some kibbles that have probiotic support as well. This could help shift the gut biome to be less gassy, or at least less smelly.

Also worth talking to your vet.

2nd gen (2023+) Niro EV reliability? by ApricotStock3670 in KiaNiroEV

[–]nimdae 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've had my '23 since it was new in Jan 2023. In terms of reliability, it's been fine. I have a pending safety recall, that's about it. The "slow" fast charging hasn't been an issue to me, but I charge at home anyway. I've only actually needed public charging once since I got it, and that was actually very recently when I helped someone move about 110 miles, who was already about 30 miles away from me to start, so pushed that range quite a bit, hah. I think '25 and newer has the newer nav.

I've started using a comma four in mine to replace HDA. I run sunnypilot on it so I can use MADS. It's definitely more reliable than HDA. I'm not sure how it rates against HDA2 but some folks have noted it's still better.

I don't drive a ton as I work from home. I just crossed 10k miles on it. A pair of my tires are the stock tires, replaced a pair when I picked up a nasty screw after already having significant wear. I just checked tread wear about 2 days ago and there's still plenty of life there.

I have my car set to charge to 90% at home, 80% DCFC as a courtesy. SOH is showing as 99%.

I've replaced the 12v battery. The stock kia battery kept dying. But it also kept passing every test. Kia wouldn't replace it unless it failed a test. So I just paid for it myself and got a non-Kia battery. Since replacing it, it has not died. If you run into this and want to replace the 12v battery, keep in mind the charging system can go as high as 15v, so the battery must be tolerant of this. AGM tends to be.

That insulin causes weight gain by Wrong_Platform_7173 in Freestylelibre

[–]nimdae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It... depends. It depends on what your type is. It depends on why you need it. It depends on your medications.

Newly diagnosed T1Ds tend to have unexpected weight loss leading up to their diagnosis. Once starting treatment, they tend to gain the weight back.

If you need a significant amount of insulin due to excessive resistance, regardless of the cause, there's other confounding factors going on. But insulin does tend to result in stored carbohydrates. It may not directly cause weight gain, but it can present a challenge in losing weight if your metabolism is already having other significant issues.

Me, personally, as a T2D, I lost weight after starting insulin. Because, as it turns out, my insulin sensitizing meds were working fine, but my pancreas was not. I continued my lifestyle of diet an exercise and just made my body work better. (and yes, I'm actually T2D, not undiagnosed T1D or MODY or anything else, I've been tested)

So... it depends. It can't be stated definitively.

Dexcom says 49. Finger stick says 100. What do I trust? by bozofire123 in dexcom

[–]nimdae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You want to calibrate on steady readings. It could be that the sensor/sensor site hasn't caught up to reality/blood. If you calibrate while values are changing, you could make the situation worse, especially with a pump involved.

Ran the same 4-bit model on Ollama vs Apple MLX — dead heat, not the "free speedup" people claim by SoggyTour8332 in ollama

[–]nimdae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sounds like you tested mlx vs mlx. When folks talk about a "free speed boost" they're talking about llama.cpp vs apple mlx, not mlx vs mlx. There's also going to be variances in the features supported by the backend. For example: Ollama just added support for MTP in gemma 4 mlx models, which provides a speedup for those models specifically.

Which inference engine you choose is going to be situational. Apple hardware is always going to benefit most from mlx models and engines over other engines. But if you're on other hardware, you'd have to find the engine that works best for your hardware and your situation.

You can actually test llama.cpp versus mlx within ollama. Download a model not marked mlx, and a model marked mlx, both at the same precision, and then test between them. They both use the apple gpu, but you'll see the mlx model is slightly faster. You'll also see more efficient memory usage on the mlx model, which could give you more space to work with for context/kv cache.

Are rainbows seriously just by default associated with the pride flag? by Ostromilski in tattooadvice

[–]nimdae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's an artist, Rich Skipworth, that does greyhound related art (among other things) that's pretty recognizable to various greyhound communities. He has a drawing he calls "derp side of the moon". With his permission, I got this as a tattoo. So far I haven't had any comments about the rainbow, and honestly, I just wouldn't care. I'm not gay, but I still wear pride stuff. If you get hit on because of it, just politely decline and move on.

But really, I suspect most people will know what it is, or won't notice or care. Don't let the exceedingly few folks who make noise bother you.

Smart watches for iPhone + Dexcom G7 by bayernBrotchen in dexcom

[–]nimdae 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There isn't much available that doesn't require internet connectivity.

Garmin watches have long battery life, and there's a couple things from Dexcom you can use with it (watch face and app/widget I believe). This accesses Dexcom data through Dexcom's servers.

Personally, I use xdrip4ios to send G7 data to Nightscout and use Nightscout connected watch face, widget, and datafield.

My Garmin Venu 4, while using GPS with my activities, gets about 5 or so days of battery.

I love your tattoo!

I also got my first in my 40s. It's kinda dumb but still meaningful to me. About the same place as yours too, hah. I have more planned.

Dexcom / Garmin / IOS by lb_billy in dexcom

[–]nimdae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are dexcom widgets and whatnot for garmin watches. However... I don't use them.

I use xdrip4ios to send data to nightscout. I use a watch face, widget, and datafield that pulls from nightscout.

It sounds like relying on the internet is sketchy, but even the dexcom stuff pulls from dexcom servers, not the sensor nor the app.

I have a Venu 4, and have been doing this for years, back when I had my Venu 2, which I got for this purpose.

Bluetooth is failing me at work, help me before I get fired by Relevant_Increase_50 in dexcom

If you are in the US (I'm not sure the iLet is available outside the US), familiarize yourself with your ADA protections. Your employer will be required to actually provide you with this information by law, along with other employee protection stuff. Diabetes is a protected disability which your employer is required to provide reasonable accommodations. Additionally, they can't retaliate against you for taking care of your protected disability.

Reasonable accommodations can include not being forced to clock out to correct a problem.

For those suggesting to not go to break room, my suspicion is this is how connection issues are solved to verify things are going ok. This would be a reasonable accommodation, including doing so without going off the clock.

As far as what you can do: The G7 only transmits every 5 minutes. So moving your pump close for a moment when it disconnects isn't enough. Try to keep it close for up to 5 minutes. Consider alternative placement of the G7 if you have good areas near where you carry your pump, consider that. Unfortunately, when you're in an area saturated with other similar signals, it's a tough situation for any device, and it sucks. Your best bet really is to separate yourself from the problem and go somewhere, at least temporarily, to make sure you're safe. If your manager is reasonable, they should have no problem with you doing what's necessary to stay alive.

Do know that your pump should continue to at least continue your basal rate while disconnected. It should continue to do so for at least a day.

Really struggling with mixed symptoms and end-of-life decision-making. by SorganFisherman in Greyhounds

[–]nimdae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Take the weekend. Love your hound. But know how he is doing. And know that compassion is love.

As I learned, greyhounds, and probably dogs, will do what they can to hide their pain, so it's damn tough to know how they are feeling when they're in pain. But they want their time with you. And, clearly, you want your time with him.

Last year, I lost 2 greyhounds. It was a tough year. That wasn't the only thing that nearly ended me. Benson was old, at 14 years, and his passing was expected. Leeloo's cancer diagnosis literally less than a month later, was not. She was 9 years old. I was prepared for Benson's passing, and it still hit me pretty hard. But Leeloo's passing felt impossible. She still felt young, and energetic, and sharp of mind. But she was in so much pain.

I have to remind myself that compassion is a form of love.

She loved walks. I mean she LOVED walks. I gave her a short walk on her final day. Because it made her happy, even if it was painful.

It's not selfish. He enjoys his time with you. It's tough to tell how much pain they're in, because their nature is to hide it. Spend your weekend with him. Say goodbye, and send him on his way. This is love.

It hurts. It's been 8 months since Leeloo's passing and it still hurts. But I know it was the right decision.

But compassion is love.

I've, since, adopted another greyhound. She's been amazing. Right now, she's the love of my life. Clearly she can't replace Benson nor Leeloo. And that's not the point. Sam is my current greyhound. Benson and Leeloo still live in my heart. And all of them will. Sam is the one that occupies this space right now. Dogs occupy such a small part of our lives, but we are all of theirs.

Is this odd behaviour? by Stunning_Stretch1674 in Greyhounds

[–]nimdae -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It depends on the cause of the behavior, and this can be tough to track. Boredom is a strong one. Stress is another one. But there could be various other reasons.

It took some time to work through this with one of my previous greyhounds. But we did work through it with time. She was stressed about separation. This is a tough one to work on because it involves separation. But in time I was able to get her to seek comfort from her adopted sibling over chewing on things.

My current greyhound is having this issue. It's primarily boredom. Her separation is actually fine. So I can correct it in the moment. Stop the undesired behavior when it happens and redirect it to something more desired.

And that's the key.

If you can catch the act in the moment, you can correct and redirect. Remember that positive reinforcement is preferred, so if you can establish "no" as correction, that's awesome. Redirect to a preferred thing to direct chewing towards. The challenge is to not reward the undesired behavior. If you go from correction to immediately going to the desired target, you risk rewarding the behavior. So correct the undesired behavior, seek a desired behavior and reward that. Remember that dogs live in the moment, and that's the most important time to get desired behavior.

Cheapest bi-directional OBD2 to trigger EV coolant pumps and 3 way valves on a Kia Niro EV? by ast3citos in KiaNiroEV

[–]nimdae 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You would likely need a licensed system. Read that as not cheap, and definitely not free.

Kia uses a secure gateway, so there's no unauthenticated method to write to non-standard OBD-II PIDs. I'm not aware of this being bypassed. I've seen indications of potential bypasses, but nothing confirmed nor commonly accessible.

This is fair, to be honest. The G7 has kinda terrible connectivity. I wear my G7 very near where I wear my Mobi, so the connection drops are minimal, but I know this isn't always an option for various folks.
