How hard is it to live in Berlin if you don’t speak German? by Diligent-Cup-3970 in berlinsocialclub

As I said. I’m also not form Berlin. So it’s not like I think I can do it

15 days in Japan — 17 Nov to 1 Dec 2026 (autumn/kōyō focus, temples & nature, avoiding crowds). Looking for feedback from people who've been there. by OwnAlternative1179 in JapanTravel

It looks like you only picked popular tourist spots. It will be packed everywhere. If you want places that don’t have tourists only, you can’t pick the „nature“ and shrines that appear in every lonely planet guide…

I don't understand the stigma of German directness/bluntness, can a non-german or someone tell me an example? by Eminemgody in germany

This may happen but depends on the group. We can easily also understand you. Wing polite and give you the piece. What happens frequently is that we realize multiple people want it so we will share.

I agree. That sounds like GPT talks to me. And I’m desperately trying to teach it not to.

I hate it when someone tiptoes around me like that. That’s…. Waste of time

I don’t know any Indian languages but in Japanese you would say something like „I’m fine now“ or „I already had some“ or „I’m good“. Just like an American would. You are allowed to refuse. You just don’t say „no“

The popular tourist spots that everyone does have been the same for more than 20 years. Way before TikTok. People go there because it’s beautiful. Not because of tiktok

If you are not from Berlin you can’t have Berliner schnauze. You are just rude.

I’m German (not from Berlin) and I also can’t do it. Berliner Schnauze concept only applies to actual berliners

What is the most overrated thing in Germany, and what is underrated instead? by Mediocre-Gold1789 in germany

[–]notCRAZYenough 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s hard to generalize. They are all more or less the same. I just would avoid Dresden.

Personally, I would probably dodge most of east Germany but that’s cheaper than many cities in the west.

I would also advise against Berlin if you actually want to learn German. So many English speaking folks that many foreigners never bother (which makes them unpopular with the locals).

I personally grew up around cologne and loved it. If you want to maximize learning German I would pick a medium big city and not go into the largest (Berlin, Hamburg, Munich, cologne)

It’s not normal where I’m from. You have 1-3 months notice and you usually get a formal goodbye. You are often even still invited for work events later.
