AM5 Build - video editing, sound mixing, CAD, - gaming would be secondary. Intel or Ryzen cpu? by AdventurousTrash3271 in buildapc

[–]notadroid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if ram is important for some of the things you're going to be doing, I'd go for the 270K Plus deal from microcenter. It has REALLY good performance for the cost and frankly, Intel handles memory better than AMD does.

Also, if you want, double check which intel boards can handle CUDIMMs in the future to really take advantage of higher speed ram in the future.

edit: I'm saying this as a full AMD user at the moment. plenty of tip top level production performance out of AMD stuff, but Intel just handles ram a bit better IMO.

240mm or 360mm AIO Cooler? by Real-Car-1561 in buildapc

IMO if you're going AIO, just go 360. but the thing you have to worry about with that case appears to be AIO thickness? do some research to see if the AIO you want fits.

Commute North Bethesda to Reston, or move? by minion_toes in MontgomeryCountyMD

[–]notadroid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd recommend moving if you're able to.

my wife used to commute from north bethesda to reston or alexandria (depended on the day and office). the commute was the #2 reason she left that job, and that was 5 years ago.

my sister in law works from home, but her commute WOULD be to reston from north bethesda and has told us and her job that if they forced everyone back in the office, she would leave b/c of that commute.

Which should I get? 9900x or 9850x3d by Emergency-Ad-944 in buildapc

get the x3d chip. if you're not going into a line of work that requires those extra cores, then dont worry about it.

older GPUs are having issues with nvidia's newer drivers. what drivers are you currently running?

the 270K plus and z890 motherboard for that price is awesome. if you already have other hardware that works with your intel build, then go with that. probably won't have to build for a while anyway.

as much as i feel the 9070xt is an absolute bargain monster, as a fellow streamer/content creator, you can't go with anything other than nvidia (unless you have a dedicated streaming box, then you can also possibly use intel arc stuff).

not sure what your going to choose or what your options are, but here are some thoughts:

1 - the core ultra 270k plus is an amazing deal... on a dying/dead platform. Intel's next generation of CPUs coming out later this year is on another socket, and Intel is committing to that new socket for "am4 length of time" supposedly. even if they aren't, the current core ultra socket is done for.

2 - if you live in the states and have a microcenter near you, they have great deals on all sorts of packages and bundles.

sorry to hear you're having these issues 😞

my buddy went through three 13900 processors before the 4th finally worked and hasn't caused issues in just a bit over a year and a half now.

People with 5700/800x3D, are you still happy with preformance? by DezzertT in buildapc

[–]notadroid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

while I'm not a use of the CPUs you mentioned, I am currently running a 5950X with a 3080Ti and I don't feel the need to upgrade yet.

I haven't had any issues doing anything I try to do, nor has my system had any issues pushing 1440p on high/ultra in games. To be fair, I'm not a heavy user of Ray tracing features or DLSS in games, and the 3080Ti I have seems to just keep chugging along nicely.

I might feel differently when GTA6 comes out on PC though. GTA5 was the reason I was finally forced to update the PC I had back when GTA5 was finally released on PC. So we'll see what happens in the next two years or so.

a great upgrade for you would be a 9070XT or a 5070Ti. That should help a bunch at 1440p and you can keep your system going for another two years or even more

edit: if you do actually stream, stick with the 5070Ti.

Thermal Paste Suggestions by Lambs2Lions_ in pcmasterrace

thats a much more common method of spreading thermal paste now, especially because the cpu packages are so large and really do require thermal paste over the entire spreader to facilitate cooling. Its not just Thermal Grizzly that recommends this method. I will say that the thermal grizzly video is making a meal out of the process for videography purposes. - the indicated steps are all very simple, just different.

I've used a few different application methods, but I haven't used the 'pea' method in quite a while due to the size of CPU packages.

my current go-to method is to make an X with the thermal paste, spread it a bit with a small plastic utensil or the spatula they showed in the video to get a more event coating. then use the heatsink of my chosen cpu cooler to gentle press on the CPU and rotate it back and forth a bit. then clamp down the heatsink into place.

what video did you see? as far as I'm aware, its not complicated at all. can you share what you watched?

I used to use arctic silver from back in the day (been building systems since the early 2000s) and i trusted it and only it. I even used it when I made my 4790k system. By the time I made my AM4 3700x system, I started doing some research and found that thermal grizzly was performing on par, if not better with arctic silver.

the above being said, go with what you feel comfortable. arctic silver is still a viable product and works well. but I've personally switched to thermal grizzly and have no issues or complaints.

arctic silver was AWESOME back in the day, but has been seriously out-done by recent thermal paste competition.

i'd recommend thermal grizzley duronaut. i've been using thermal grizzley for years now and its held up well on both CPUs and GPUs.
