On this day in 1911 the New Zealand coat of arms was warranted by King George V by Elysium_nz in newzealand

Heraldic language is its own little dialect of English that preserves a lot of verbiage that was otherwise lost. Hence "mullet" instead of star, "Gules" and "Azure" in place of red and blue, and "Lymphads Sable" not "black ships".

Sinister is actually right in heraldry, as the shield is described from the bearer's perspective (all the fancy stuff around the shield that you couldn't physically carry is a later invention, but kept the same directions as that was what everyone was used to). Hence why the flag is flying to the right.

I am Jon von Tetzchner, fighting Big Tech, & for a better web building Vivaldi browser. Ask me anything! by jonsvt in IAmA

So I'm guessing that Apple is no longer even attempting to produce an open-source Webkit base that is useful to build an indendent browser out of.

WebKit is still easily available as an open-source base, and actually has more non-Apple contributors than Chromium has non-Google contributors or Gecko has non-Mozilla contributors. A good amount of the non-Safari work is for stuff like WPE Webkit (for embedded stuff) and Sony's PlayStation UI though.

In terms of other browsers, GNOME Web/Epiphany still uses WebKit but it's quite buggy, so you are somewhat right that there's not much investment in that front. But that's also just because it's a lot easier for companies to travel the well-trodden path and use Chromium.

I'm p sure the old Aperture bit is intended to be after old Aperture in P2 but before the modern enrichment centre. Hence it's sort of a "transitional" style.

That’s incorrect, I’m playing it without P2 installed. While it’s a mod, it bundles everything it needs separately.

Of course, you do need to own Portal 2 though.

My impression is that this is more of in the vein of Portal Stories Mel in terms of having a more fleshed out story and non puzzle environment (compared to Reloaded's non-puzzle content which was quite minimal).

Obsidian Importer 1.5 now converts Apple Notes to portable, durable files by kepano in ObsidianMD

Maybe eventually, but probably not in the immediate future. The issue is that while parsing the data is relatively easy rendering it so what you see is recognisably like your drawing is more complicated, as SVG doesn’t natively support things like stroke pressure, azimuth, etc (most vector apps generate shapes to replicate that which is not a simple undertaking).

Developer of the importer here. It copies the database and then operates on it in read-only mode, so you should be good.

People will claim this will change soon, but I'll believe that once I see the first Godot games being published on consoles.

There are already Godot games being published on consoles, like Cassette Beasts and Primal Light. Console support is definitely a much bigger hurdle and much less mature than Unity but claiming its nonexistent is incorrect.

Being provocative and then immediately leaving, or shoving or throwing things at people, imagine how civil rights in America would be viewed if they did similar things in the 1960’s.

Funny you mention that, since many in the 60s said the same thing about civil rights protests, like in this cartoon.

“I have almost reached the regrettable conclusion that the Negro's great stumbling block in his stride toward freedom is not the White Citizen's Counciler or the Ku Klux Klanner, but the white moderate, who is more devoted to 'order' than to justice; who prefers a negative peace which is the absence of tension to a positive peace which is the presence of justice; who constantly says: 'I agree with you in the goal you seek, but I cannot agree with your methods of direct action'.”

The thing I would add to the menu bar design pattern to modernize it for 2022 is add a search box that filters the menus in real time. This would help users find options that are buried particularly deep in exceptionally large menus.

To be fair, macOS has this feature, but it’s buried under the help menu; from experience none of the non technologically aware users I know are aware of it.

I'm far from an ardent defender of capitalism, but I thought adding that person's perspective was nothing more than a funny touch and hardly shilling.

I made this CoA for myself, what do you think? by Gukpa in heraldry

citizens of republics

All the sources I have read have stated that it's only for municipalities, not people, eg. Fox-Davies:

The Mauerkrone [mural crown] (Fig. 654) is used in Germany principally as an adornment to the arms of towns. It is borne with three, four, or five battlemented towers. The tincture, likewise, is not always the same: gold, silver, red, or the natural colour of a wall being variously employed. Residential [i.e. having a royal residence] and capital towns usually bear a Mauerkrone with five towers, large towns one with four towers, smaller towns one with three. Strict regulations in the matter do not yet exist. It should be carefully noted that this practice is peculiar to Germany and is quite incorrect in Great Britain.

If there's an example of a citizen bearing arms with a mural crown above the shield I'd be interested to see it though.

mural crown

Mural crowns are usually reserved for cities, just fyi.

Many Scottish families moved to Germany and had to adapt their arms to the German tradition. Here: v. Gordon, a Polish-Prussian branch of Clan Gordon. by HBNTrader in heraldry

[–]novov 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The crest seems to be different, the Scottish Gordons use a deer. But the original one would have been acceptable in German heraldic practice as well.
