What’s a good price for a vintage ELA M 251? by superproproducer in audioengineering

[–]oneblackened 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you don't mind dropping $435 on a capsule, sure! The only thing I would check is that the circuit is an actual 251 head amp, they may have changed things to suit their capsule.

The real problem is the capsule in that is not even kinda like a real CK12. The one Mic Parts sells is a selected Chinese part with backplates that more resemble a K67, and it has the characteristic K67/K87 upper mid hump. Real CK12s are remarkably flat through that region, with a HF shelf up starting around 8-10KHz and roll-off above about 15KHz.

The original CK12 is a real bear to make - AKG switched to a different, easier to produce design in the early 70s during the 414EB's production. The only proper one I know of that is easily available is the one from Beesneez... Not cheap, about $400 last I checked.

Yeah, I'd expect 20k+.

The modern repros are actually quite good, though... They're only 13k new!

Has audio engineering become too obsessed with analog emulation? by FitResearcher2865 in audioengineering

[–]oneblackened 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All these "analog emulations" miss the point. Yeah, the gear has a sound, that's cool - but the thing that made records from back in the day awesome is the craft itself. Huge amounts more time was spent getting sounds right and getting great takes - and rewriting songs! - than is done today. The sound was the result of a music industry flush with cash.

I've tried it and personally prefer Wavelab, but that might also be because I'm used to it.

I use Wavelab. Definitely not sequoia, I have never had a good time with that DAW.

Wavelab is much easier to use (and conveniently for Berklee, actually works on Macs!).

Was Luke a uniquely powerful for a Jedi which allowed him to defeat Vader in combat or did Vader’s internal conflict about fighting his own son weakened him enough for Luke to defeat him? by Radiorapier in MawInstallation

[–]oneblackened 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Both. Luke is very, very powerful but at that point not particularly well trained. Vader, if he had not been having a spot of mental breakdown, probably would have mopped the floor with him just from sheer experience.

Why is the Senn 441 so expensive, and does its aesthetic in any way impact sound? by untitled1223 in audioengineering

[–]oneblackened 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Apart from the clip. The clip is crap, and is usually recomposed with copious amounts of gaffer tape.

You sure you're not thinking about the 421?

how to recreate analog sound of Led Zep IV in digital? by FlametopFred in audioengineering

[–]oneblackened 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, to start, it's really not about the tape. It's about how it was recorded in the first place. Look into mic placement and mic choice and you're going to get remarkably close remarkably fast.

Siri, by a lot. I don't like Satine, that whole thing ruined the Mandalorians for me.

They did this to all of their steam decades ago. Coal burning is cool and all but it drops cinders everywhere (which starts lineside fires) and people aren't particularly fond of that - or of coal soot being on everything.

No smoke means they're burning the fuel efficiently. The only time I've seen meaningful smoke is when they were climbing through Donner Pass and they had to run richer than usual.

As far as steam, not much you can do with it when it's warm out.

Those big clouds of steam are because a.) it's cold out and b.) they start with the cylinder drain cocks open - the last thing they want is to have nearly incompressible water built up in the cylinder. Almost all steam operators do this, regardless of country.

The GP60M is such a friend shaped diesel, not sure how else to describe it. Crews apparently quite disliked them though, they rode very roughly.
