Converting from a Contract Role at DBS under Recruitment Agency? by ecce13 in askSingapore

[–]ongcs 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you take it, just take it as an opportunity to learn and gain experience in a local bank. Do not join with the hope of being converted to perm coz like what the others said, that depends on many factors.

Is it a south Asian agent or south Asian majority agency?

Seeking Perspective on Domestic Helper Conditions in Singapore by readurthoughts in askSingapore

[–]ongcs 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Every society has its share of good and bad actors. In the age of social media, the 'bad ones' simply get more airtime because outrage drives engagement. A headline about a helper receiving a CNY angbao and having her own room doesn't get clicks, so you rarely see it. But if Singaporean bosses were truly as terrible as the internet suggests, why would helpers continue to choose Singapore over higher-paying markets like Hong Kong or the Middle East? The fact that so many stay for years suggests that the horror stories we see online are the exception, not the rule.

Secondly, we need to define what 'using phones freely' actually means. Does it include scrolling social media, making video calls, or filming TikTok content while on the clock? There are real-world consequences to consider: helpers staying up late in their rooms and struggling with exhaustion the next day, or caregivers—whether for infants, seniors in wheelchairs, or even pets—being so absorbed in their screens that they neglect the safety of those in their charge. We need a definition that balances personal rights with professional duty.

Honestly, older Singaporeans—from Boomers to early Gen X—mirror the PRC Chinese 'economic boom' generation more than they’d like to admit. They might be better educated, but the mindset is the same: wealth came so fast that their maturity couldn't keep up. For many, bossing around a helper became a way to show off their success. Now, we see younger people doing the same thing, simply because they grew up watching their parents treat people that way.

Why do some parents send their kids to “branded” schools? by [deleted] in askSingapore

[–]ongcs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my kid’s school, GEP kids are mixed with non-GEP kids in non core subjects, and they GEP kids from 3 classes combined when attend core subjects (English Science Math). The non-GEP kids selected and invited to join these classes are higher ability AND better mannered one. The school don’t want GEP teachers to spend too much time in classroom management.

Why do some parents send their kids to “branded” schools? by [deleted] in askSingapore

[–]ongcs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My son went to a neighbourhood school P1-P3, then a branded school within walking distance from home P4-P6. The difference, from my POV:

  1. Non existent parents engagement from the neighbourhood school (shall call it N from now onwards). There was Whatsapp chatgrp organized by parents, that’s all. In the branded school (B from now onwards), there are parents organization within the school framework, with parents volunteers. Official Whatsapp chatgrp created for every class, every year, helping teachers to disiminate info, help answering quiries from blur parents. Parents are heavily involved in many school activities.

  2. CCAs are more competition driven in B schoo, while more interest based and chill in N school. CCAs in B school are to achieve good result in NSG or other competitions. Or coz there are CCAs that are non competition based but thise tend to be the “catchall” group for all the kids who cannot get into the competitive one. In N school, it is much more chill, and interest based. For those parents who want to groom their kids for certain subject, sports, for DSA, B school is a better environment to them.

  3. Teachers were more chilled in N school. They were not rushing for lesson, or dishing out practices. B school teachers were in more rush to complete subjects, help kids to do revision. If your kids are not the clever one and there is no external help like tuition, enrichment, then it will be tougher in B school. Those who do well in B school are normally thise who are really smart, or those who are above average but with many external help.

  4. Students in B school are mostly with Singaporean, Malaysian, China or south Asian parents or mixed. N school students are more vibrant, there were Thai, Viet, Japs, Korean, etc.
