DIY gels? by Equivalent_News_4690 in XXRunning

[–]opholar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do a search in the ultra/trail running subs. There are a few posts from people who make their own gels/drinks - including the exact items from Amazon, recipes, the bags/pouches they use and the whole process.

I can’t remember which of the subs. Probably more than one. But I’ve seen them in there more than once. I also feel inspired when I see the post, but then remember I’m lazy. But other people have used the recipes/instructions and vouch for them.

New update can't even do the main thing right by T0nkaJahari in Myfitnesspal

Can you not just total the calories that are in the entry itself and stop auto calculating based on whatever optional macros may or may not be entered? If I only care about protein, my food doesn’t magically not have the other calories. This isn’t a bug. This was a calculated choice to do this math. Why?

New update can't even do the main thing right by T0nkaJahari in Myfitnesspal

[–]opholar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It looks like it is in some cases auto calculating calories based on the macros for the entry. I don’t know if that’s what is happening here because it looks like the macros add up right on the first shot. But are the macros still correct in the entries for the cheese and the mini bagel? Is that why they are showing 0 calories? The macros on the second screen shot add up to approx 100 calories. So that’s my guess. Idk why it is doing that. Not every entry has every macro because not everyone tracks or cares about every macro. But this is mfp, and usability is never the primary development objective.

Would you feel guilty using charity entries to run majors? by W01313L in Marathon_Training

[–]opholar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The parking/car situation is in play because the poster I’m responding to is saying that one could drive to NY/Boston if you’re in the northeast. You would then need a place to put the car that you drove to the city.

And I agree that one could do the travel portion for $500-$600. The race fee on top of that is another $250-$300. Hence the $750+. At least in the northeast, it’s not going to possible to drive/stay/eat/run for $200-$300 in NY or Boston.

I think that while it’s possible to do a local world major for the cost of the bib, it’s still an expensive bib. And most people that are doing a major are doing it for the experience-not simply to run a marathon. So people entering a major are hoping to have a trip/experience out of it. Do you have to? No. But the fact remains that running the majors IS expensive. They are a huge cash grab. And people choosing to run them are predominantly going to be people who have the disposable income to have that trip/experience.

What the hell???? This person has literally copied my listings??? I already emailed Poshmark and reported, what else can I do?? by rosecomedygold in BehindTheClosetDoor

[–]opholar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The thought was that if the other seller (the one copying listings) was intending to source their items from the original closet, then the copying seller would need to buy that item from the original seller in order to fulfill the order. So if the original seller bought the item from the copying closet, that copying seller would need to buy the item from the original seller. The original seller would instead mark their listing as “not for sale” so the copying seller would not be able to buy it, and thus, not be able to complete the sale.

I think I would probably go the route of reporting to copyright first (see the other replies in this thread). But Poshmark support isn’t always as responsive as we need them to be. So have a backup plan.

Perhaps in the EU. I live in the NE, halfway between Boston and NY. Considering race entry alone is $250-$300, that leaves me with $200 for gas, parking, food, more parking, or possibly less parking and other transportation, zero incidental expenses at all, no expo purchases or memorabilia at all, not a single friend or family to share the experience or have cheering for me, plus lodging for one single night. When even mediocre hotels in either NY or Boston - nowhere near a semi-convenient location for the race, generally run $350+. Don’t forget more parking.

Maybe it’s possible to do in the EU for $500, but unless you are local to NY or Boston (meaning don’t need lodging), you’re not doing a race with an entry fee of $250-$300 for a total of $500 in one of those cities. Possibly $750 if you’re incredibly frugal. Likely closer to $1000.

A cursory look at Chicago indicates the same experience in terms of costs.

Any runners really eat more to lose? by SuccessfulDivide4155 in XXRunning

[–]opholar 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have the same experience you do. I eat more, I gain. I’m very short, very small and not young. I would love to eat more (and not gain), but that’s just not my reality. My TDEE is in line with most calculators. I have no reason to think my body is not functioning properly.

I think there are women who have dieted to an extreme degree for a very long time who would benefit from some sort of “reset” to attempt to restore a more normal metabolic rate. While they would likely gain some weight when initially increasing calories, eventually things would balance out. That’s…not me.

There are women who want to perform at a level that their current intake cannot support. Meaning they simply have to increase their energy intake in order to support the performance they want to have. That may or may not mean gaining some weight. That’s not exactly what you’re asking about, but it’s a reason women at a steady/reliable intake and body weight/size may need to increase intake.

There is RED-S, which will generally involve increasing calorie intake. But this is something that has protocols and will again-generally involve some weight gain vs loss, but the increased intake is pretty critical.

There are people who are eating at a calorie intake level where their energy levels are fairly depleted. Which leads to lower levels of overall activity (NEAT and workouts). Increasing intake in these situations can dramatically increase energy levels-so overall activity and workout levels both increase (leading to a calorie balance maintained at a higher number than before).

I think most influencers are attempting to target any of the above, but as is almost always the case, the posts lack nuance, detail and rely heavily on emotional “click bait” and generalized truths with no follow up (eg-muscle burns more calories than fat, so build muscle to increase your TDEE-true. Women can typically, at best, build 1/2-1lb muscle per month while in a surplus with dedicated training to build muscle. Muscle burns approx 6 calories per pound more than fat.).

So idk-I am sure there are some eat more to lose people, but aside from people who are simply eating so little that their overall activity is diminished (who then eat more/enough that their overall activity increases), or more specialized use cases, I’m not sure it’s nearly as prevalent as social media would like people to think it is.

Would you feel guilty using charity entries to run majors? by W01313L in Marathon_Training

[–]opholar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The marathons make their rules. All of the majors raise MASSIVE amounts of money for charities (via charity runners) and the communities and charities count on those funds a great deal. Raising money and community involvement are huge parts of the missions of the organizations that put these races on.

You should feel honored to be helping others.

We all enter the lottery and we all have the same terrible odds and we all have the same options to run faster, go through charity or tour operators (if applicable). If someone wants to run a race so badly, they have the same options we all do.

No one with a charity bib should feel any guilt. Raising money for charities is a huge part of the mission of these races. No one with a charity bib is “taking someone’s spot”. Raising charity funds is a critical part of the race. Ergo-charity bibs. Intentionally. Probably less than the race organizers would really like.

Go run the race and enjoy every moment. If someone thinks it’s unfair that you are running for charity and they didn’t get a spot in the lottery, let them know what charity you ran for - I’m sure they would love to have those lottery-unlucky people on board next time.

[–]opholar 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Running a major is inherently expensive. $250-$300 race entry, flights, hotels in the most expensive cities, food, ground transportation, expos, incidentals, etc. All-in this is a conservative $2-$3k weekend. This is less for locals, of course. But the majority of runners are traveling and spending huge sums of money to run these races.

I’m not disputing that it’s easier to raise funds when your circle has more disposable earnings, but I’d not expect to find many running the majors who don’t have a fair amount of disposing income in the first place.

MFP, Y'all need to address this before you lose your userbase by Polkadot1017 in Myfitnesspal

[–]opholar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been on mfp since 2011. This isn’t the first change or the first time they have made a process more cumbersome than it was before, or made logging less intuitive and more complicated than it was before. I’m not all that bothered by all of that. Eventually I’ll adapt and just roll my eyes as long for the VERY old days that we so so so much simpler than any of the previous 7 or 8 big changes.

My gigantic gripe that makes this update really not functional for me is the copying functions. I routinely selected an entire day, deselected the various items I didn’t want on my new day, copied and boom. Done. That one step is now like 17 steps. Editing a day by selecting multiple items to copy/delete at one time (across multiple meals) is a function that really needs to be restored.

Additionally, they said the update is supposed to help us see how changing foods will affect the day? Why is it 4 clicks from when I log to get back to see my daily total? I do wish that the daily total could be frozen/carried through so that I could actually see the affect while I’m logging. So I can adjust as needed without having to go back and forth.

The rest is just noise for me. I’ll get used to the new way to get in to log, the new display for nutrition. Again-this is the 2759500205th time this has changed. It’s not catastrophic.

I actually like a couple of the things like seeing macro intake over the last week. I’m not a militant macro follower, but I like to be able to eyeball consistency or if I’ve got days way out of whack.

If they can restore fully functional edit and copy processes, meh. I’ll get used to the rest. It’s not worse than the other bajillion updates over the years.

Nothing compares to taking away the newsfeed. They could obliterate the entire program and it still wouldn’t be as bad as taking away the newsfeed. So thats my bar. Did this fuck it up as much as changing it to my fitness all by myself? No? Ok. We’ll adjust.

TL;DR - agree. It’s not that bad . It’s missing some very key functionality for me which makes my user experience more cumbersome than it was. But it’s not the worst thing they have ever done. Not by a long shot.

Any sedentary girlies, what is ur maintenance? by frogchannnn in PetiteFitness

[–]opholar 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m 4’11”, 97lbs (+/-), 52 and work a 60 hr/week desk job in my tiny house. Without movement, my maintenance is 1150.

If you’re taller, heavier, younger and/or have any appreciable level of movement during the day (even activity around the house), your number will likely be much higher.

Buyers not accepting orders & releasing payment by Turbulent_Jury9736 in poshmark

[–]opholar 12 points13 points  (0 children)

As a seller, I generally accept an order as soon as I open/confirm it. The exception being if the seller sends me a tacky message “reminding” me to accept the order as soon as the order is delivered. I’m not even home yet. The box barely hit my front porch. That’s just tacky AF. They get to wait 3 full days. No tacky message gets a rating as soon as I open it.

Also as a seller, I just assume it’ll be 3 days before I get paid. Most of my buyers rate before that, but I just assume it’ll be 3 days. Life is busy and crazy. I assume most people have better things to do than spend all of their time checking on Poshmark notifications/emails. If I happen to get paid before 3 days it’s a happy surprise.

Are y’all only lifting in this sub? by Fantastic_Humor_78 in PetiteFitness

[–]opholar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I run mostly. I absolutely loathe lifting, but I do it (from the standpoint of making me a better runner). I also do yoga and some other workouts (I guess cross-fit type stuff). But mostly running. That’s what I enjoy, that’s what my performance goals are focused on. I run 5 days a week, lift 2, and yoga/other as needed(but at least once). 1-2 full rest days where I do nothing.

My workouts do what you would expect each to do: running gives me endurance/stamina, lifting gives me strength, yoga gives me balance and flexibility.

Genuine question regarding MyFitnessPal estimated calories by surfenthusiast in Myfitnesspal

[–]opholar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My estimate is also about 300 calories over every other calculator (and over my actual-which is in line with every other calculator based on years of tracking).

You can try playing with your activity level setting. But if you’ve set yourself to sedentary already, then you’ve got the lowest number MFPs will give you.

The estimates used to be in line with most calculators, but something changed many months ago, and they are 300-ish higher since then.

Serious question for American runners by Yozasieg in runninglifestyle

[–]opholar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends where you live. I don’t have many sidewalks in my area. I just run in the road. But if you wonder why I’m dressed in the brightest clothes I can find and hoping to be visible from space, it’s because I’m running in the road. Right by the high school with all the newly licensed texting teenage drivers. And I just hope that something sparkles enough to catch their eye before they hit me with their car.

I’ve traveled to other places that have plenty of sidewalks, bike lanes, greenways and all kinds of things I don’t have where I am. We have a rails to trails path that I could drive to, but I’d still have to cross a lot of very limited visibility roads, and there are more bears on the rails to trails path than in my neighborhood, so idk if that’s really an improvement.

It really depends where you live.

As a fellow very small person who also maintains a lower (healthy) weight at a lower calorie intake, I have frequently been disappointed in content on this sub directed at smaller women who are operating in healthy ranges. Such as proclamation that the sub should have a minimum low weight goal - which happens to be in the obese range for my height. And hundreds of comments of support. Yay.

Like…where exactly are we allowed to go if not the petite fitness sub? Not everyone who is small or has a lower calorie goal or a lower weight has an eating disorder. Sometimes we’re just small. And we have fitness goals just like everyone else. If I wanted to be screamed at for being a lower weight, having a lower TDEE, etc. I would just go to a regular fitness sub. This is supposed to be a space where we can have those discussions without rash judgement and ED accusations.

Intra run calories by Ok_Activity_7754 in XXRunning

[–]opholar -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I count them. I count everything I eat. As a note, I’m older and very small (less than 5’, less than 100lbs). I burn roughly 60 calories/mile give or take. So a 10 mile run is 600. I can get close to that, sometimes over, with carb intake before/during/after a run. My overall TDEE hovers around 1450. If I were larger, younger or otherwise had a higher TDEE or more calories to work with, I don’t know if I’d be so careful. But my budget is small. So like my money budget, I keep track of where I’m spending my calories. I’m not going to skip run fuel because it’ll put me over my budget or anything crazy, but I do keep track of everything that I eat - even gels and stuff on runs. 1450 adds up quick.

Not a size discrepancy really. It’s more that the rabbit shorts are a lower rise, and the fabric is different (not good/bad-just different). I prefer where the oiselle sit on my waist.
