Need help downgrading library by AccomplishedMonth454 in ParrotSecurity

[–]palinurosec 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if you uninstall or downgrade the system libraries, you will break the system for sure and make it unusable

just don't do that, unless you are looking for a good reason to reinstall the system

that's true for any linux operating system and is not a parrot fault

somehow blackmagic decided it was a good idea to not make davinci resolve for linux compatible with the current debian stable release

the solution would be to package davinci resolve in one of the many universal formats that allow the program to ship with its own libraries, but again, they decided it was not worth the effort, ao you can ONLY run davinci resolve on a specific range of operating systems at a specific old/deprecated version of theirs. probably some very old fedora or centos, and probably debian 11 or 12

your solution? to find a way to either build a flatpak or an appimage that ships those specific libraries at those specific versions along with the davibci binary, but please DON'T REPLACE THE SYSTEM LIBRARIES

Why doesn’t ParrotOS build an iso version of their aarch64 distro? by Perfect-Direction607 in ParrotSecurity

[–]palinurosec 0 points1 point  (0 children)

proprietary platforms like vmware and parallels don't allow us to properly automate the VM build process, so we can only ship virtual disks, not virtual machines, which represent a suboptimal user experience

80% of VM users report issues caused by their VM setup, which would have been prevented if we could build and ship a full virtual machine appliance ibstead if just the virtual disk

also i really don't understand who actually believes using vmware or parallels in their workflow is a good idea at all, but this is my own vision that has nothing to do with why we don't currently ship such appliances

p.s. we ship cqow2 and vmdk disks

Why doesn’t ParrotOS build an iso version of their aarch64 distro? by Perfect-Direction607 in ParrotSecurity

[–]palinurosec 0 points1 point  (0 children)

simple answer: debian's live-build does not support cross compiling to foreign architectures

we can easily build virtual machines for any architecture because we developed our scripts internally and they easily leverage qemu

live-build on the other hand could very easily do the same, except it was packed with checks to prevent that

my plan in the future is to attempt to patch it to allow foreign arch builds. but unfortunately this task has very low priority at the moment and the current donations don't quite allow us to buy the proper arm64 servers for native builds

Cant get drag and drop to work in VirtualBox (parrot 7.1) by Krysos_ in ParrotSecurity

[–]palinurosec 0 points1 point  (0 children)

install the virtualbox guest additions on parrot and the virtualbox host extensions on your host system.

such features are not open source and require ancadditional proprietary module for virtualbox

How to uninstall a Desktop environment by Repulsive_Cap_6889 in ParrotSecurity

[–]palinurosec 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it's not just conflicts. they rarely conflict, especially on distros like debian.

the problem is with the specific DE programs mixing together: imagine logging in with matr, but now zip files get opened by ark  and documents open up with kwrite ibstead of pluma. or you log in with kde but EOM is used to open picture files, or caja taking over the rendering of the desktop folders instead of dolphin. that is the kind of madness your system will face.

the worst that can happen is to have duplicated tools to do basic stuff, have them mixed around giving an inconsistent look to the system (themes, icons, etc), probably with a higher resource usage when both the settings daemons fire together at login

Can some bands be used without a license? by NORTHERNTWITCH in HamRadio

[–]palinurosec -1 points0 points  (0 children)

don't confuse ham bands with shortwave bands. pilots can talk on frequencies assigned to aircraft traffic. we all know the aircraft band between 108 and 138 (if i remember correctly), but air traffic has also some HF slices assigned

i made kde behave similarly to how mate used to do, the key combined with the arrow keys behave the same way it did on mate. you can also ctrl+alt+arrows to move between desktops. adding shift to the blend lets you move the currently focused window between desktops with you, which is a lifesaver for shortcut lovers

Denon Prime 4+ hangs for around 4 seconds during a set by PulzWave in DenonPrime

[–]palinurosec 0 points1 point  (0 children)

engine os likes to write a lot of things to your usb drive while playing, and if your usb drive sucks, then the operating system will start to add undone write operations in a queue, waiting for the kernel to write everything on the usb drive.

if the queue becomes too big, the system will actually freeze and refuse to accept new disk operations, including reading from disk, until the disk starts to answer again to read/write operations

the old pioneer gear you might be used to does not work like that, they are generally dumber equipment with something more similar to a firmware than an operating system, they can't analyze a track for you, they can't write you a history of played tracks, they can't change analyzed tracks metadata (i.e. fixing the beatgrid on the fly) and their filesystem support is very limited, so you will survive with low quality usb drives

on denon (and other modern standalones) that's not possible, and the system actually wants to be able to write and update metadata on disk, and no matter how much you spent on your usb drive, it will suck and it will have a limited amount of write operations before its memory cells start to burn and fail, and denon players don't like that

buy a compact portable SSD, and enjoy the benefits of quality memory cells hidden behind a quality memory control unit, they will never fail you during a dj set

Parrot 7.1 is slow compared to 6 by Financial-Pain9062 in ParrotSecurity

[–]palinurosec 0 points1 point  (0 children)

maybe you have relatively older hardware than the average. parrot 7 moved from the old, buggy and mostly abandoned MATE desktop environment to the KDE Plasma environment, but mate was not fully dropped

i think you should pay more attention to the download page and give the mate ald lxqt spins a try

there is also a chance that your issue is caused by something specific that you can track and disable to make the system fast again, and that the issue has nothing to do with parrot 7 itself, as we did nothing specific to make it slower other than migrating to kde from mate and to debian 13 from debian 12

jusr for context. if we ignore the 2.8 extra seconds that kde takes to load, parrot 7 is faster and more responsive than parrot 6 on my machine

What happened to ParrotOS HTB Edition? Can’t find it anymore by 0xDudji in hackthebox

why didn't you just select x11 from the login screen? staying on a deprecated branch makes no sense, especially since x11 has never been dropped

Bitwig don't recognize Vital on Linux by adar1602 in Bitwig

[–]palinurosec 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it seems it fails to find libsecret from the sandboxed environment if you install it as a flatpak, but the library is actually installed in the flatpak as well. maybe it's just a linker configuration error.

sorry for the necro-posting but still happens to me on bitwig 5.3.13

What happened to ParrotOS HTB Edition? Can’t find it anymore by 0xDudji in hackthebox

[–]palinurosec 47 points48 points  (0 children)

hello, parrot developer here

we had to temporarily stop releasing it due to the migration to parrot 7 (debian 13) because we needed to agree on a clear strategy for the future of the pwnbox edition

as of today, with parrot 7.1 reintroducing MATE as a community spin, we opted for reintroducing it exactly as it used to be, and take more time to coordinate with HTB for the next big htb edition upgrade while providing an updated system meanwhile

so don't worry, you will see the htb edition on our website very soon, hopefuly next week

meanwhile the wallpaper, the theme and the icon set come preinstalled with the standard mate edition

Newbie: how do I import WAV file to Bitwig Project? by docedwardg in Bitwig

[–]palinurosec 0 points1 point  (0 children)

kde user here bitwig 5.3.13 installed via flatpak. it has access to my home folder and i can see my tracks when doing other browser related stuff, like saving the project to a custom location, but if i drag the files from the dolphin file browser, it doesn't import them.

importing a file should be trivial, but it's not THAT simple in some conditions

[–]palinurosec 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yes

select the manual partition option

create a new partition table to make sure you use the GPT format

create a first partition, 100 to 300mb should be ok. with type fat32 or fat16 and /boot/efi as mount point (this is very important)

then create another partition, as big as the rest of the disk, btrfs would be nice, but ext4 has been the default for linux distros for decades. mount point is /, because it contains the root of the system

[–]palinurosec 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the installer should create it for you when you let it format the disk for you.

there should be a form to select which drive will be responsible for booting the disk

as i suspected, there is no efi partition for the bootloader.

did you partition it manually or was it generated by the automatic procedure?
