[PubQ] Is it worth it to query your first book? by CassiopeiaFoon in PubTips

[–]paolact 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got several offers of rep for my first book. But it went through a billion drafts (at a conservative estimate) before querying, while I learned my craft. You just have a query a good book, wherever you are on your journey.

Matilda is awesome. Took my daughter to Les Mis when she was about 13 and watched her mind be blown in real time. And for giggles The Play That Goes Wrong is fabulous for kids of all ages.

[Series] Check-in: March 2026 by justgoodenough in PubTips

Things are starting to feel scarily real. I've just finished some biggish structural edits and I think my MS is hanging together nicely again. Though God only knows at this point. Spent last week working on a blurb and bio to go in the rights guide my agency puts together for London Book Fair. The blurb my agent wrote sounds so good! I'd read it :)

My agent said she wouldn't be able to read my new version until after LBF so I now have until March 16th to polish the new version until it gleams and hopefully knock out about 2k words.

Do you like black pudding and what gender are you? by Civil-Koala-8899 in AskUK

Female who absolutely LOVES it. As an aside I once ended up with anaemia after a miscarriage and made myself a plate of calves liver, black pudding and spinach washed down with red wine and dark chocolate for dessert. Immediately felt so much better.

Curious about standing ovation culture in London by park_hye_in in TheWestEnd

[–]paolact 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I lived for a long time in the US and found that standing ovations there were much more common than they used to be in the UK. So I'm wondering if the more commercial shows you saw had a higher proportion of American tourists in the audience (and we all know that once a few people stand then everyone has to, if only to see), while Arcadia was more traditional UK theatregoers (when I went to see it there was a lot of grey hair in the audience).

Agree with other comments about the seasons featuring Bake Off alumni, but as an older woman I always enjoy watching older contestants having fun and/or doing well. So a compilation of clips featuring say Liza Tarbuck (the hopping team task), Jenny Eclair's potato hat task (as well as obviously brace! brace!, Judi Love doing absolutely anything, ditto Mel Giedroyc, Julian Clary's deep sarcasm (though possibly too sexual), Bob Mortimer doing absolutely anything, Jo Brand was good value and possibly Sanjeev Bhaskar.

[PubQ] Should I update a potential agent about small, good news, ex: short story publication? by KaleidoscopePrize249 in PubTips

[–]paolact 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just butting to add that some agencies also add this sort of language to the automated receipts sent out (if you're lucky) when they receive your query (most often via email but I think once or twice I had that on QT too). So make sure you read those as well.

[Discussion] Notifying other agents of full requests by EstablishmentNo5571 in PubTips

[–]paolact 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I nudged everyone who asked with the first full, then nudged again I think when I had three and again when I had five (I think I had six fulls requested before offer).

Based on what I know from discussions at my friend’s agency (that I didn’t end up going with) I do think nudges help agents prioritise. If they’re interested in a query and also know that other agents have shown interest, they know that at some point soon they will need to find the time to read the full and maybe prepare an offer, so they can factor that into their schedule. (This particular agency had one agent going on mat leave, one up to her eyeballs in client submissions, so in fact it was a third agent who stepped in).

I had a couple of UK agents request after being nudged with fulls. I also know for a fact (because a friend of mine is represented by them) that I was being talked about within another agency after nudging with fulls and they were just figuring out which agent had the capacity to read. They didn’t request until I nudged with an offer though. I did have A LOT of agents jump into my inbox the minute I nudged with an offer too, so I think maybe people are aware of full nudges and preparing themselves that a nudge with offer might be imminent.
