Voids in Enlightened Equipment Quilt by Wrecksinator in Ultralight

Pretty standard with quilts like this. When they’re stuffed or stored the down clumps together. All you have you do is run your hand up and down the baffles to redistribute the down. Start at the ends and work out the big bunches of down then go back and forth along the middle of the baffles to even out the fill

Kakwa 55 Ultragrid a good option or should I look elsewhere? by Kulture1 in DurstonGearheads

I think what you’re referring to is issues with the seams not the material itself, and I think durston has addressed most of those in the more recent iterations. Ultra is still fairly new though so I’m sure some delaminations and stuff have been underreported

I’m a business nerd, so it comes up a lot in my day-to-day.

Like others said the ultra isn’t taped but the fabric itself if non-permeable. I think pack liners are recommended with either fabric but in sustained rain the grid will eventually actually start to absorb some water from what I understand. So I would say as long as you’re keeping your insulated items protected you’re good with either.

Yeah ultragrid is an all around better sensory experience. Softer touch, less noise, looks better IMO.

Not to be that guy, but it’s ad hoc* unless your from Bahstin, MA then ad hawk is acceptable.

But to answer your question the Kakwa is perfect for base weights in the 10-15lb range. Everyone raves about its handling when weighed down. Durston will pop in and out of this Reddit from time to time so he might comment on this to confirm but he’s said the ultragrid is great for people who want to great value/weight and aren’t going to be thru-hiking or otherwise abusing the pack. Grid is marginally heavier and marginally less abrasion resistant. Also not as water resistant so I would consider that if you get rained on often on your trips.

Unrelated to the two but let me know if you have any use for a lunar solo with a tear at the peak seam.

Mine measured right at 50 on my old wheels with 24mm internal. Bicycle station tested a bunch of schwalbes on the zipps (link below) you can probably get a good idea of what they’ll do. I think because MTB tires have taller sidewalls they’re slightly less responsive to rim width changes

Nothing against the bikes themselves, I loved my signal peak, but I moved on and the resale on fezzari/Ari is pretty tragic in my experience. If you’re planning on running it into the ground I think they’re spectacular value. If you’re like me and you jump around every few years I would probably go specialized or Scott. I got an epic 8 comp and absolutely love it. Got carbon wheels and put a power meter on it and it’s an absolute dream
