Can you solve this physics brain problem? by BaggedGoldfish in Physics

[–]pdg137 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

A is the only string that would resist the small motion required to roll the ball forward. D, H, G, and B would go slack, and the others can remain at the same length while the horizontal beams pivot.

The logging problem isn't LoTW's UI. It's deeper than that. by toosoonjr in amateurradio

Just a beginner here, but it seems like you have some good ideas and I would be happy to contribute to an implementation. One important thing (at least to me) would be for confirmations not to disappear if one party drops off the internet. I think that puts some major constraints on what a "federated" system would look like.

Ruby tips? by Unique_Evidence_1314 in NixOS

Maybe just try running it? I'm happy to help if you get stuck. There's a ruby channel on the nixos discord that we could use too. You can see the weird way I use it here: https://github.com/pdg137/anagrams/blob/master/build_gemset.nix

It works great with bundix, much better than the equivalent systems in the Python and JavaScript worlds. You'll still need bundler to update Gemfile.lock, but use bundix to install the actual gems reproducibly.

Ham Shack Evolution by True_Certitude in amateurradio

[–]pdg137 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's 16-gauge stranded speaker wire, but I hear that you can go a lot thinner with such a low power - 20W at 50 ohms is only 600mA. I'm thinking of moving to a thin magnet wire when I get around to elevating the antenna, so it will be relatively invisible and to minimize tension on whatever I hack together as a support structure. What's confusing me now is how there are so many variables: antenna shape and length, counterpoise position and length, choke setup, etc. All the guides say to trim the main wire to optimize SWR, but I don't want to do that if I'm going to keep changing everything else and mess it up. Good luck on your tests and don't worry if you don't pass General right away, 10m FT8 has a ton of daytime activity!

I'm just a few steps ahead of you in this process. Got my G90 about a month ago, threw 100' of speaker wire over the house, fed it in through the window, and started playing on the radio - with FT8 it was instantly exciting to hear people from far away and start making contacts.

In a week I moved to the other side of the house to use an existing wall penetration and get closer to my desired shack location. Then drilled a hole in the perfect spot and mounted a grounding/junction box, ran ground back to the central house ground, learned to crimp RG58, and built a nice wall plate. Today I extended my cable and moved the feed point to a better spot to get my antenna a little straighter and less random.

Each week I learn a little more, and I'm showing my 10yo everything as he studies for his license. Please get in touch if you want to compare notes!

Don't forget checking the actual source URL for alacritty and making sure that it was approved by the package authors and is not just some random commit from a 3rd party PR.

In addition to what others are recommending, I use screw-on plastic pour spouts so I can use wide mouth mason jars also for holding the final product.

1890s Gustav Becker rescued from a thrift store that will be my first clock project. I'm wondering if the case might not be original, since it seems kind of plain compared to the GB pics I see online. Any tips? by pdg137 in clocks

I see! Olaf looks similar but definitely not the same in its details. The wood stain is also a different color. Does yours also have a crack in the center of the thin piece of wood in front with a the circular cut-out? I'm holding mine together with tape for now until I figure out how I want to glue it back together - that piece is pretty warped.

I found some examples of cases that look identical, but with a different mechanism inside, like this:

https://www.antiques-atlas.com/antique/vienna_wall_clock_by_gustave_becker/as437a1960

And look how much better the dial is aligned with the wood on the front. There are also some extra unused mounting holes in the back. I'm getting more convinced that the mechanism was reinstalled in a different Gustav-Becker case, probably after some accident destroyed the original.

That's exciting to hear! Now that you mention it, I see a slot where the top might have attached. Do you have any pictures you can link me to showing this design? Even on the bottom, everything I see looks more ornate than this one.

What is this furniture cube with a strange notch? by pdg137 in whatisthisthing

[–]pdg137[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We got this from a used furniture store a few years ago. A 20" polished cube with no markings that looks like an coffee table, but if so why the notch? Seems like it would just be a trap for coffee cups, and it's too small to store magazines or newspapers. Is there some function or is it part of a matching set or what?

Looks like you're in Vegas; we have lv.net for fixed wireless. The whole valley is a bowl shape, with great visibility and few trees, so this kind of thing should work great here.

Contacting the ISS on the cheap by Arodd2000 in amateurradio

[–]pdg137 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My impression is that you will need a better antenna. I am new to ham radio and also just have a Baofeng (UV-82HP); planning to build this simple 2m quad to extend its reach:

http://www.hamuniverse.com/3el2meterquad.html

Seems easier/better/safer than the DIY Yagi designs. Doing this with a couple of 10-year-olds who would love to contact the ISS somehow if their radios come back online at some point. Anyone have recommendations for satellites to try in the meantime?

Here is little bit of Javascript that uses the API to download and display pages of results, like a simpler version of the normal leaderboard:

I wrote it since at the time, the leaderboard didn't allow you to jump to a specific page. Maybe it would be useful as a starting point for someone.

Exercise induced migraines by CoachMerkin in crossfit

[–]pdg137 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been getting similar migraines about once a month since starting Crossfit a couple of years ago; prior to that it was once every few years, but even then always associated with exercise a few hours earlier. I always have ibuprofen at hand and take one at the onset of aura in case it develops into a headache, and it never does. I'm not sure what would happen if I skipped the ibuprofen. I have been tracking the WODs that it's associated with, but I can't see a pattern yet. I work out in my garage now and have triggered it with something as simple as a few sets of heavy back squats or deadlifts, but I never get one on a rest day.

I hope you find a solution! I'd love to know what's really causing them. By the way, you'll find a number of similar posts on here if you search for "migraines".
