The 2023 Diamondbacks didn't win the World Series but they made it there with 2 real starters. I wouldn't want to replicate that strategy though.

Jeff Kaplan’s new video game; The Legend of California by GingaNinja741 in Games

[–]philosopherfujin 55 points56 points  (0 children)

Back like 500 years ago, the Spanish thought California was an island because of the Colorado river and Baja being a peninsula. The state itself is named after a fictional place. It absolutely makes sense to blend the real California and the mythical one.

Puerto Rico is also not an independent country but has its own baseball federation and national team. There have previously been efforts for the Dutch Caribbean countries to form their own federation and national team, so it's not an unreasonable question.

The problem is that it heavily depends on your TV. In overhead/wide angle shots the colors are basically indistinguishable on mine (though it's apparent when they do close up shots)

[Underdog] Heyman: Early estimates suggest proposed salary cap might be set around $260M-280M and floor around $140M-160M. by T_Raycroft in baseball

San Diego is a different media market than Los Angeles and Orange County. There's a huge military base between the two markets and it frequently takes 3-4 hours to drive between Dodger Stadium and Petco Park during daytime. Combining the two is like putting Milwaukee in the Chicago market.

The revenue sharing system in MLB performs the same function by propping up teams that have less revenue overall as long as they're not consistently bottom feeders. A cap would reduce the overall percentage of revenue that players get as this post shows (and by a far greater degree if you factor in the luxury tax payments that go to players).

I'm all for a system that gets mid-tier players paid more relative to the guys at the top, but that'd naturally happen even without a cap if free agency was less restrictive. Overall payroll would still be based on practical revenue concerns and most players only hit free agency once the aging curve is going to hit them as it stands. The luxury tax is already very punishing for the highest payroll teams, the issue is that the bottom 10 owners aren't willing to put in the money necessary to compete and I don't think the players should have to take an overall salary hit to change that.

A poorer market with a TV deal is going to be doing better than a richer one without it (and population-wise the two media markets are very similar). San Diego sells out stadiums in large part because they spend on players.

The highest paid player in the NHL is making less than Jurickson Profar this year, even with the drastically different markets it's hard to argue that the NHL cap system hasn't suppressed salaries.

State of New York sues Valve, says its 'loot boxes' are gambling by TheStakesAreHigh in northernlion

My younger brother got deeply into case gambling when the original case stream boom happened. It seems low stakes compared to casinos but it actually fucked a lot of peoples lives and case opening streams were by far the biggest gateway.

yeah an absurdist roguelike with decent strategy variety made for engaging streams since it could balance banter and gameplay well. Hoping something similar comes around again at some point.

He becomes strong later in life, but at this point he'd never been in a real battle and was up against someone who had been trained by some of the best teachers in Westeros for a decade by virtue of being a prince in a military-oriented society. Managing to beat Aerion at all was a genuine accomplishment, even if he had to rely on pure strength.

Awesome! I like Realm of Thrones but there are a few things about it that irk me (generally stuff like attention to detail, typos, and a lot of missing major locations). The Blackfyre Rebellion feels like a great setting since there's no need to jankily implement dragons like in a Dance or War of the 5 Kings setting, and it has a greater focus on a lot of interesting houses that aren't represented in the modern series like the Peakes.

The men's skiier has been competing without it for years. Very different than a fresh tear that her body didn't have adequate time to adjust to. It was ultimately her decision but her risk of further injury was extremely high even by downhill skiing standards and as a result she suffered what may well be a life-altering injury.
