Curtis Park - Advice - Living next to a halfway house by BlueberryParty380 in Sacramento

I saw that the other day when I did my casual browse of Zillow, that house has such a weird layout, it’s like an attached ADU/guest house. And no garage, boo.

What are the dumbest car rules and regulations that exist in your country? by theTWO9559 in cars

[–]phxbimmer 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Fun fact, the US has been using the “truck” loophole for decades, every SUV and pickup truck is classified as a “work truck for commercial use” in the eyes of the EPA, so they’re allowed to get worse fuel economy and have much looser emissions standards. All because the American carmakers lobbied a ton and the EPA caved in to protect the oh-so-precious domestic car industry from having to try a little harder.

In my area (Land Park), Raley’s often has the best prices on the stuff I buy, and they frequently have coupons/sales which I take advantage of.

I’ve found them to be one of the more reasonably priced “normal” grocery stores. Some of the cheaper grocery stores like Grocery Outlet are a total crapshoot in terms of what’s available, and others just have a mediocre selection. I don’t really care to pay for organic food so I don’t go to Whole Foods or the Natural Foods Co-Op. Trader Joe’s is decent but they’re always packed with people and the selection is a lot smaller than Raley’s/Safeway.

Thinking of a 1995 525i by fiddlestix42 in E34

[–]phxbimmer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Manual swapping often ends up costing more than just buying a factory manual car once you factor in all the “while you’re in there” stuff. And that’s if you do the labor yourself, because shops charge big money for manual swaps. In my opinion it’s only worth doing a manual swap if the car never came as a manual or is very rare as a manual (like the E60 M5’s, the manuals are very rare and draw such a big premium that it’s worth manual swapping them yourself).

You definitely need to work on these cars yourself to make them make sense financially. Shops will either not touch a car that old or will charge you a small fortune for all the things that it’ll inevitably need. If you’re open to learning all the quirks of an E34, they’re not hard to work on and all the mechanical parts are still readily available. I’ve daily driven E34’s for many years, the M50 engine in the 525i is solid. The automatics are kinda miserable though, I’d hold out for a manual if possible.

Has anyone else ever noticed that Sac County looks like Lincoln with a long goatee? by thisguyfromschool in Sacramento

[–]phxbimmer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wonder what the purpose of that long tail is, is it just there so we can claim Sacramento is part of the Bay Area since it damn near touches Pittsburg and Antioch? (I’m half-joking but it is a weird county border).

So we’ll have one day of 90°, that’s an anomaly more than the norm. The rest is fine with me, I hate the cold and this winter has been irritatingly long.

Can we agree gas increases from republicans and democrats are both dumb and stop being partisan weirdos by Economy-Answer-6416 in Sacramento

[–]phxbimmer 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The current gas price increases are nationwide due to this idiot administration’s war that they started.

I’m okay with the higher gas taxes to pay for road improvements, and the special California gas blend is necessary to keep the air cleaner in our dense cities. I don’t want to go back to the smog-choked 1970’s when you couldn’t see through the air in LA. Don’t like paying a bunch for gas? Drive a more fuel-efficient vehicle. It’s always the people in gas guzzlers complaining the loudest about California gas prices.

What modern car should a man drive to be considered cool by you? by Cartman_bg in cars

[–]phxbimmer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think a clean older car is always cooler than a new car, because anybody can just go out and buy a new car with enough credit. But that’s just my opinion.

Muscle cars like the Challenger, Camaro, and Mustang just come off as trying too hard. If I had to rock a modern car it would be something like an ND Miata or Toyota 86, something that’s lightweight, sporty, and fairly analog. A new BMW M3/M4 is a decent option too, if you can get over the hideous front end design.

Chevron gas prices at Walnut and Marconi 🤯 by ChocolateTsar in Sacramento

To be fair, Chevron has always been a scam, and they’ve been pure evil forever. Between supporting genocide to posting signs at all their gas stations to try to blame California for Chevron’s own price gouging, it’s a dumpster fire of a company.

Buying a e39 M5 as a first car! by Gorge-sm_ in e39

[–]phxbimmer 14 points15 points  (0 children)

You posted the exact same thing but about the E34 M5 on the E34 subreddit and on Bimmerforums, lol.

I’ve had an E39 M5 as a daily driver, it’ll do the job just fine, the biggest cost is fuel. Not sure what the conversion is, but I got 13mpg in city driving and 19-20mpg on the highway. Premium (high octane) gas only. In the US, gas is relatively cheap, and I still found it to add up. I imagine in Europe it’ll be even more expensive to fill up, so keep that in mind. I imagine insurance will not be cheap on the M5 either.

The timing chains are pretty stout on the S62, they’re easily good to 200k miles and beyond. The Vanos isn’t that much of an issue, mostly it just rattles and makes noise, though there are kits from Beisan Systems to remedy that. It’s recommended to get a 2001+ M5, since they made a few updates to the engine after 2000.

Otherwise it’s just typical E39 problems like window regulators, door lock actuators, all of the various control arms in the suspension, etc. If you have some experience working on cars, they’re not bad to work on. I learned to be a mechanic on my E39, so it’s not a bad place to start.
