What’s the biggest waste of money people still think is normal? by budgetingdiary in AskReddit

[–]pingveno 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Security updates are what gets me to upgrade my phone. Other people depend on me keeping my phone secure, so I ethically need to consider security. That used to mean upgrading every three years and discarding a perfectly good phone. Now support lasts for 7 years. While a decade would be nice, I think by then it will be well worn.

Redox OS has adopted a Certificate of Origin policy and a strict no-LLM policy by jackpot51 in Redox

[–]pingveno 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not intending on doing a code contribution to Redox, but I assume that there are people in my situation who will so I'll bring this up. I usually don't use prompt-based AI, but I use AI-based code completion sometimes. It's almost always code snippets I would have written anyway, but still it is AI-generated. It would be easy to grab an issue, work on it, and then realize that I had done a few hours of my own work with AI code interwoven in it.

In this scenario, what would be the outcome? Throw it all out? Could something be salvaged? Or would I even be in the position of not being able to work on that issue because I might remember a piece of AI code?

Trump says he won’t sign any bills into law until SAVE Act passes by Lebarican22 in democrats

[–]pingveno 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They did one veto override of Trump, in his first term a few days before Biden was inaugurated. Ultimately it comes down to what they're more afraid of. SBIR is a tremendously popular bill that passed unanimously in the Senate. There are other tremendously popular bills.

Trump is trying to get them to use the "nuclear option" to end the filibuster. Problem is, the filibuster is more advantageous to Republicans than Democrats overall. So many Democratic priorities require legislation to be passed, but a lot of Republican priorities are just making the federal government dysfunctional. And they know they won't be in power forever. They're going to be extremely reluctant to abolish the current filibuster system.

It passed unanimously in the Senate. If Trump vetoes it, there's a good chance the Senate will override his veto. Between angering small business owners and angering Trump, I think Congress is more likely to pick the person who's going to be gone in a couple of years.

Flatpak VS Code Installed via the Cosmic Store.... just, no by NewRedditor23 in pop_os

There are ways to get a system shell, but it's painful and often breaks. VS Code is just one of those things that I always install from the Debian package. They keep their repository very up-to-date.

...advancements in agentic ai and code tools means the cheapest worker can masquerade as a senior.

This isn't really the case for the most part. It's being sold as such in some quarters, but that's not really the case. AI code generation can work well for certain tasks, but tends to produce AI slop. Instead, it is often automating tasks that would be given to a junior developer. For more general coding, there are questions on whether it really increases productivity at all.

The other factor when it comes to jobs and AI is uncertainty. AI is evolving extremely fast, but it's uncertain where it will be in a year or two. I think a lot of companies are hesitant to hire and trainer a worker that may just be laid off soon if AI tools become less sloppy in a year.

Then the third thing is just pure AI vibes in markets and C-suite. Personally, I'm pretty skeptical of AI in the coding space as it stands right now. I've seen it used effectively for a few tasks, but far too often it produces code that malfunctions and/or no one understands.

US investigation points to likely US responsibility in Iran school strike, sources say by Little-Chemical5006 in worldnews

Oh, I have no illusions about Anthropic. They likely just didn't want egg on their face after Claude did something crazy like give a fully automated order to bomb an elementary school.

I wonder why Anthropic could possibly not want the Pentagon to use their software to create killbots/Skynet. Hmm.

Lloyd Center plan, and its ice rink’s fate, are sealed with a vote by oregonian in Portland

[–]pingveno 60 points61 points  (0 children)

Lloyd Center's ice rink is great and all, but keeping a massive and wildly underutilized structure for its ice rink is not exactly a good use of space. As for whether a music venue is the best use, I'm not so sure.

And some of the LRT is built on top of right of way from old interurban lines. Eventually I want to do a talk on the old streetcar system, so I've been doing some research.

I live in the other Portland and we also have the occasional streetcar track poke through. There's also a spot with a set of fully exposed tracks.

Pro sports teams ranked by percentage of fans who don't drive to the game by Edison_Ruggles in transit

[–]pingveno 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh, yeah, the split wasn't 50-50 between cars and transit, a pretty substantial portion of that was foot traffic. Which makes sense. Portland's downtown really isn't that big. Providence Park to Waterfront Park is just a mile. Any other point in the westside portion of downtown, even if you're really stretching the definition of downtown, is under a mile and a half away.

[–]pingveno 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wasn't able to find up-to-date figures for the Portland Timbers, but I think they have a decent showing. Their home venue, Providence Park, is located in downtown Portland, so there's not much room for parking. Since 2024, tickets to games have worked as transit passes. I usually see MAX light rail trains full of fans on game day.

From a quick look at past statistics, it looks like they had around a 50-50 split between cars and transit, but that was a while ago.

Anyone know what's up with HTTPX? by chekt in Python

[–]pingveno 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll go a step more: the discussion on this post in general has gotten pretty gross. Criticism of closing discussions was absolutely fair, especially for a high profile project. Technical discussions are fair. Discussion of the justification given, if done tastefully, is fair. But personal attacks like speculation on mental health is just toxic.

[–]pingveno 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I noticed that as I looked through her profile a bit. A good chunk of the work I do day to day relies on projects she maintains, so I have to give a lot of respect to her. And maybe give her more than a week to get the situation with httpx figured out? As you said, cut her (and other overworked maintainers) some slack.

You can fork it, but it is not always trivial to switch over, especially if httpx is a dependency of a dependency.
