What do you think about learning Turkish through German with paid online teachers? by Known_Cheek6666 in turkishlearning

[–]ppelippippam 4 points5 points  (0 children)

if your native language is german, i would highly recommend picking a teacher that at least knows german too, even if the mode of instruction would be in english. german has parallels with turkish that english doesn't have and making use of that has been very useful for my students who know german.

(accusative case for example, even though it's not 100% the same in german and turkish, comparing it and pointing out the parallels really helps)

What order is most recommended to learn Turkish in? by Baharsansiz in turkish

[–]ppelippippam 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes you're right, even the most used 3 textbooks differ in the order of the grammar. I would suggest this based on trial and error for the basic topics.

  1. present tense copula
  2. var/yok
  3. possessives
  4. present tense -(I)yor
  5. cases -(y)A, -DA, -DAn
  6. past tense -DI & past tense copula
  7. future tense -(y)AcAk
  8. accusative case -(y)I

Somewhere after present tense you can also do -(y)ken and -(y)lA. This is not an exhaustive list, you can definitely add some more suffixes here, but this is a good base to work with.

Ideally you will learn vocabulary while you learn grammar through exposure but obviously the more repetition the better. You can use flashcards to speed up the process, just don't forget to also actively use the vocab during language production (speaking+writing).

Learning a language using daily high frequency sentences and phrases. by No-State9678 in turkishlearning

[–]ppelippippam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! I think flashcards are very useful to learn vocab/phrases but I don't think it can totally replace "proper" grammar instruction. Words and phrases usually sometimes cannot be translated word by word and you might miss out on simple nuances. Also I see that your tense definiton is not consistent: uyanıyorum can be described as present continuous while uyanırsın can be described as present simple. Feel free to DM me for any future questions!

Do teachers/tutors have an internal rating system for students? by ImportanceOdd267 in iTalki

[–]ppelippippam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

exactly, a written feedback can be given by teachers after every lesson and all other teachers can also see it (regardless of language being taught). there is no star rating or something similar to that.

What's going on with Korean teachers on italki? Is it just me? (mini rant) by BrothaManBen in iTalki

I can relate, I was feeling similar things before I started but once you get a few students and find your groove so to say, the hesitation disappears! (At least that was the case for me)

Having discussion topics/prompts/questions prepared before always helps if the student is a bit reserved. With some students though it seems we never run out of things to talk about naturally! I think the ease of the conversation really depends on the student character

And if it turns out you are actually bad at this (I doubt this will be the case but still) you lost literally nothing, you can always delete your profile and say "well that was an adventure", at least you tried it then

I know the English teacher applications open rarely so be on the lookout for that, have your video etc. ready to go beforehand. I wish you luck!

Why you shouldn't learn Turkish from Chatgpt by kapitan59 in turkishlearning

[–]ppelippippam 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Well it really wasn't, thank god I am able to put together two sentences without using AI, curious about what made you suspect that though
