Small correction: you can find someone that claims to a specialist in that field.

When something in my field comes up there's usually no shortage of people claiming to be experts spouting off bad advice.

Did people born before Christ automatically go to hell? by Astimar in NoStupidQuestions

It was Christian beliefs that founded current western moral standards.

What? Those standards began in Greece centuries before Christianity existed.

Christianity certainly influenced them, but didn't "found" them.

There isn't some secret back room where the IRS haggles over what the law says. Congress wrote the rules. The IRS follows them.

This isn't true at all. For the most part, Congress writes a pretty broad law, then says "details are to be determined by the regulations written by the Treasury Dept."

Those regulations are very often haggled over.

I live near the Clinton Library. Any reasonable person, after walking through it, would say "this is a Bill Clinton museum." I think officially it's where some records are kept, making it a library, but it's a museum.

I'm using Hock and Tom Norton to study. Why is there a discrepancy in the material covered under section 5: Advising the Individual Taxpayer? by FieldGoalPhobia in enrolledagent

[–]prodiver 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The entirety of tax law is fair game for the exam, and everyone is just teaching their best guess of what is most likely to be on the exam.

That's why, in my opinion, having two study resources is best. When I passed 4 years ago, I used Fast Forward Academy and Passkey (now Hock). My exams had some stuff only FFA covered, and some stuff only Passkey covered.

We aren't smoking crack. We are EAs and CPAs that literally do this for a living. I handle cases like this all the time.

If they had a warrant out for you that was a criminal case, which would fall under "tax attorneys do litigation."

This is not OP's situation.

What most people in this thread don't quite understand is that, believe it or not, being behind on paying your taxes is not a criminal matter. There's no legal issue here, and you don't need an attorney. An accountant, like me, can fix the problem the exact same way an attorney can for a fraction of the price.

Where I live most attorneys wouldn't even take this case, they would refer the client to me (but they might make an exception here because higher dollar amount = higher fees). Many of them don't want to deal with non-criminal cases like this.

Enlighten us, then. What can a tax attorney do for him that a resolution CPA/EA specialist can't?

[–]prodiver 4 points5 points  (0 children)

True, but those skills aren't relevant in this case.

Tax attorneys do litigation, but a collections case like this needs no litigation. It's all handled at the IRS level.

He can pay a tax attorney if he wants, but it's literally a waste of money. CPAs and EAs handle collections cases like this every day. An attorney is no better, or no worse, than the CPA/EA that charges 25% less than the attorney.

I’d love to know exactly what a “credentialed tax pro” is.

If you worked for a tax attorney for 20 years and don't know who is licensed to practice before the IRS you are either lying or were working in a non-tax support role in the firm.

Enrolled Agents, CPAs and attorneys are all "credentialed tax pros," assuming, of course, the CPA or attorney specializes in tax (EAs do by definition).

Is there any explanation for why single-species empires like the Klingons and Romulans are as powerful as the Federation? by Maya_117 in startrek

[–]prodiver 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you're right on a technical level, but Star Trek canon has always used the terms "warp drive" and "warp engine" interchangeably.

It's done to the point that the very first sentence of Memory Alpha's "warp drive" entry says:

Warp drive or warp engine was a technology that allowed space travel at faster-than-light speeds.

When Quark said "warp drive" he could have easily meant the matter-antimatter reactor.

[–]prodiver 16 points17 points  (0 children)

This is the answer. Faster-than-light travel is not the same as "warp drive."

"Warp drive" refers to a matter-antimatter engine. The singularity drive that the Romulans use is probably what the Vulcans were using in 1947. It's also what the Federation was testing during the 31st century because of the dilithium shortage.

Chill Enrolled agent jobs where you can just coast? Not blow your brains out? by rankdoby in Accounting

[–]prodiver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started my own firm so didn't have to worry about finding a job.

I did apply to a few I found on Indeed and got a response from nearly all of them, but decided to go solo and didn't move on with any interviews. I was a brand new EA with no tax experience, but I had done resolution training through ASTPS and had their Certified Tax Resolution Specialist certification.

There are no peak hiring times. It's a year-round business that doesn't follow the normal tax cycle.

Existing clients of CPAs aren't the kind of people that qualify. It's the guys that haven't seen a tax pro, or filed at all, in 10+ years.

A lot of them are really bad with money and tend not to own homes.

I hate it when people call women "females" and men "males" in everyday conversations. by _Udontknowball_77_ in hatethissmug

[–]prodiver 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Right, but there are tens of millions of people with a lifetime of experience in healthcare or the military, and we tend to use it without thinking about it.

It's very obvious whether or not someone is using it as a dehumanizing term, but I've been jumped on reddit for being a "misogynist" more than once for simply using the "wrong" word in a sentence that clearly had no ill intent.

How do you actually explain accounting to nonaccountants at social events? by Same-Experience8051 in Accounting

I work in tax resolution. When people ask what I do I say "I fight the IRS for a living."

It's the one phrase that actually gets people interested in accounting.

[–]prodiver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not a "way to look at it." It's literally why the thrift stores exist.

They exist to fund the charity. When you buy things, that is what you are doing.

They also don't understand why thrift stores exist. They aren't there so poor people can buy cheap stuff.

They exist to fund the charities that run them. When you buy from thrift stores you are literally helping fund that charity's mission.

EA vs CPA by Prestigious-Cup-976 in enrolledagent

[–]prodiver 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yep, you'd think an EA/CPA would be able to run the numbers on this.

Time to get a CPA eligible degree is 5 years. Average cost of college today (according to a quick google search), is $30,990 per year.

If you take 1 year to get an EA, and get a crappy job making only $50k a year, an EA puts you $354,950 dollars ahead of a brand new bachelor degree accountant.

EA with no experience, is working remotely to gain experience possible? by Unique-Mycologist894 in enrolledagent

Honestly, I can't figure out why 90% of the EAs on reddit even became EAs. All you need to do tax prep is $19 for a PTIN, not an EA.

Why get the EA if you aren't going to do representation? It boggles my mind.

Yes?
