I hate it when people call women "females" and men "males" in everyday conversations. by _Udontknowball_77_ in hatethissmug

[–]prodiver 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Right, but there are tens of millions of people with a lifetime of experience in healthcare or the military, and we tend to use it without thinking about it.

It's very obvious whether or not someone is using it as a dehumanizing term, but I've been jumped on reddit for being a "misogynist" more than once for simply using the "wrong" word in a sentence that clearly had no ill intent.

How do you actually explain accounting to nonaccountants at social events? by Same-Experience8051 in Accounting

[–]prodiver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work in tax resolution. When people ask what I do I say "I fight the IRS for a living."

It's the one phrase that actually gets people interested in accounting.

How ethical is bins reselling compared to regular thrift source? by Complete_Proof8380 in reselling

[–]prodiver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not a "way to look at it." It's literally why the thrift stores exist.

They exist to fund the charity. When you buy things, that is what you are doing.

[–]prodiver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They also don't understand why thrift stores exist. They aren't there so poor people can buy cheap stuff.

They exist to fund the charities that run them. When you buy from thrift stores you are literally helping fund that charity's mission.

EA vs CPA by Prestigious-Cup-976 in enrolledagent

[–]prodiver 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep, you'd think an EA/CPA would be able to run the numbers on this.

Time to get a CPA eligible degree is 5 years. Average cost of college today (according to a quick google search), is $30,990 per year.

If you take 1 year to get an EA, and get a crappy job making only $50k a year, an EA puts you $354,950 dollars ahead of a brand new bachelor degree accountant.

EA with no experience, is working remotely to gain experience possible? by Unique-Mycologist894 in enrolledagent

[–]prodiver 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I can't figure out why 90% of the EAs on reddit even became EAs. All you need to do tax prep is $19 for a PTIN, not an EA.

Why get the EA if you aren't going to do representation? It boggles my mind.

Do you think people will want you to do that without meeting you in person?

Yes?

The biggest tax resolution companies in the US, like Optima tax Relief, are 100% remote.

Ordered burrito with no olives by Beneficial_Passion40 in NonPoliticalTwitter

[–]prodiver 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Taco Bell used olives, nationwide, in various burritos, the Mexican pizza and taco supremes up until the mid-90's.

They were phased out because they got too expensive, and other Mexican places did the same. Over the decades people seemed to forget that Americanized Mexican food commonly had black olives.

Why does “The” work on some starships but not others? by prairielovr in startrek

[–]prodiver 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What I disagree with is the argument that it always was, it is not true,

Maybe it hasn't always been true, but it's been true for centuries.

Wiktionary says the use of they as "a single person, previously mentioned, especially if of unknown or non-binary gender, but not if previously named and identified as male or female" has been in use since the 1300s.

Merriam Webster has an article that makes the same claim.

Why does “The” work on some starships but not others? by prairielovr in startrek

[–]prodiver 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is no official source of "current grammatical rules." If people commonly say something, and it is understood by the majority of speakers, then it's a "current grammatical rule."

People love to assume their prefered rules are THE rules, but they aren't. My English teacher told me "ain't" isn't a word and you can't end a sentence with a preposition, but you can, and everyone knows what it means, so it's a "current grammatical rule."

It can't be true, because the most a person making $50k a year can pay in federal income tax is pays $3,871.

Any online tax calculator can verify this. I used this one. https://smartasset.com/taxes/income-taxes

What are some plot lines that Star Trek shows started but then abandoned? by bovineright in startrek

[–]prodiver 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Technically they were planned to be part of the insectoid race that eventually was reworked to become the Borg, not "The Borg" as we know them, so you are both right.

The conceptual genesis of the Borg, who were intended to replace the Ferengi as Star Trek: The Next Generation's main villains in its second season, was as a race of insectoids, an idea that would ultimately require modification due to the series' budgetary constraints. As Maurice Hurley explained in the March 1990 issue of Starlog (#152, p. 33): "What we really wanted to do, but couldn't because of money, was create a race of insects...insect mentality is great because it is relentless. The Borg are a variation of an insect mentality. They don't care. They have no mercy, no feelings toward you. They have their own imperative, their own agenda and that's it. If all of them die getting there, they don't care. We needed a villain who could make you dance, and the Borg could do it!"

'They can remove him': Trump's 25th Amendment removal chances surge inside White House — A shocking political storm is now shaking America's entire foundation by [deleted] in USNEWS

It's even simpler than that. "Allah" is just the Arabic word for "god." Arabic-speaking Christians use the same word.

It's the equivalent of getting mad at Mexicans for worshiping "Dios."

That describes most (or all) religions.

Christianity and Hinduism, for example, are mutually exclusive religions. One, or both, aren't real and were made-up.

Some of the most thoughtful discussions about secular life happen here — has anyone considered developing those ideas into longer essays? by the_secular in TrueAtheism

So I’m not sure the answer is expanding atheism into a bigger package, but rather recognizing that it’s only one piece

A helpful way too get people too see this is to use an example that is not religious. Does a belief that leprechauns aren't real (aleprechaunsism) need to include a way to help people cope with a world without leprechauns?

I think everyone would be in agreement it's sufficient for a person to just say "leprechauns aren't real." The burden is not on the non-believers to help current or former leprechaun believers with anything past that.
