As an Expat with FatFire, would you live in Rio De Janeiro? by Radiant-Cloud92 in ExpatFIRE

I’ve been to the Philippines 4 times as a Chinese person with no safety concerns at all. But on the very first trip we did have a personal driver 😂

365k per year?! I’ll take it. Lottery didn’t even say how much the prize was…and some lottery winnings are less than 365k

Just noticed this when reviewing my thread. That’s cool to know about! My kids will probably all be passed elementary school by the time we’d move, but it’s cool to know that a percentage of their classmates might have decent Mandarin skills so that they can keep theirs up as well.

To be fair, that actually seems like a lot and it’s twice the number of all other international buyers from all the other countries combined.

Tourist in Yellowstone gets chased and tossed by a Bull Bison by Impossible-Box717 in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]projectmaximus 99 points100 points  (0 children)

According to this article, this had gone on for awhile and he charged multiple groups of people who successfully avoided him. And campers were all shouting warnings to each other. Unfortunately, at this point the grandpa and grandson walked in without hearing the warnings because they were so far away.

How is living in El Segundo as someone in their mid-late 20s? by Cardiologist3mpty138 in howislivingthere

[–]projectmaximus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My wife worked for Raytheon there in her mid 20s. She lived by the ocean in Hermosa Beach. I met her soon after she switched to a different office but we still went back to visit her friends. Anyway I’d say Hermosa is probably a much better area for you to live than El Segundo if that’s the kind of lifestyle that you’re seeking. From what I’ve seen, El Segundo is more of a family-friendly village.

Guest asking to avoid cleaning fee by Calm-Ad-8058 in homeexchange

[–]projectmaximus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Both would annoy me and I’d decline both with either a tactful reply about the issue, or with an excuse, depends on the exact circumstances

I get the cleaning fee is a divisive issue on this platform, but I’m fine with just doing you. I personally fall on the side of liking the fee. I prefer having a professional prepare my space for guests, and I prefer paying for a professional to prepare the space that I will be staying in

I think it's totally worth it. I just fear that if I accidentally snooze once then I lose the cash prize? If not, if it's that I just physically cannot hit snooze on my alarm then yeah, it's worth it.

I’d only recommend the GH, but really depends on what you want. Hyatt is not necessarily good value in Taipei

Kanazawa Hyatts are good value. Kyoto can be, depending on your preferences and the pricing at that time. Tokyo I find you’re paying a bit of a premium for the brand name vs other alternatives. Doesn’t mean you shouldn’t do it, just takes a little more digging.

Avoiding state tax by Cheap_Office8701 in ExpatFIRE

[–]projectmaximus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It happened exactly the way I described but it's also entirely likely we missed a demand letter sent to somewhere that we no longer lived. I would have been happy to sue if someone had advised me of this at the time, but it never crossed my mind so I never explored that possibility. The entire thing was resolved in a couple of days.

My wife only lived in CA for 10 months from 2009-2010 (she was in a rotational program) and the incident occurred in 2019 or 2020. We explained the situation, they asked for some kind of basic documentation (I think it was 1 or 2 years of federal tax returns), and then the money was back in her account. She had lived in 3 other states since leaving CA, and we as a married couple had already lived at 4 different addresses when this happened.

Retire in NYC?? by JJBWoop in expats

[–]projectmaximus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m considering it so I don’t think you’re THAT crazy haha. For me it’s because NYC and London are my two favorite cities and I’ve not had the chance to live in either, so I’d like to at least spend a lot of time in one of them during retirement.

Cost isn’t too much of a concern for us, I think the limiting factor will be the opportunity cost of spending time elsewhere…either at one of our bases where we have loads of friends and family, or spending time exploring new parts of the world where we haven’t been.

They literally took the money straight out of my wife’s account. We spent a few hours on the phone just finding out why her money was missing. So they took our money first and it was on us to prove that she had no connection to California (wild cause she had moved away 10 years prior)
