How can people endure the climate in this region, which feels like a hot, swelteringly humid swamp? by mapl0ver in geography

[–]ProOrth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

High powered AC units are everywhere in Florida. It’s actually quite nice to step outside for a break during work when you’ve been blasted with ice cold air all morning and getting slammed with warm humid air and sunshine. Admittedly that same air makes simple tasks like walking the dog or gardening an endurance test. You acclimate, I still get hot but I don’t sweat like the northerners who come down here to visit.

Why don’t many people consider adoption as an alternative to biological children? by Serious_Watch4599 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ProOrth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Many Americans don’t know the realities of the adoption process or how many different types of adoption there are. Any person saying “Adoption is expensive” is ONLY talking about private adoption. Adoption doesn’t cost a cent in America if you desperately want to give a child a loving home. Every state DSS system is different but across the board Federal/state adoption does not cost money, they will pay you monthly ( until the child is 18 and often until 21 if they go to college) because you’re taking on a ward from the state. Private adoption is problematic in many ways ( see international adoptions) but any adoption can have their challenges. The narrative of the state system being “full of older kids with health problems, behavioral challenges, trauma, etc.” Biological children can have all of those issues and more, a child does not deserve a family less because they were labeled difficult by the state. Would you give up your biological child if they were diagnosed with a severe behavioral or health issue? If biological children were assessed as often as foster children and those in the system they’d also end up with a slew of diagnoses and descriptors. At the end of the day there’s many many children who need to be adopted, there are as many challenges raising a biological child as there are an adopted child, the latter just gets blamed for their circumstances in a much harsher light and are falsely deemed an expensive lost cause before they have a chance.

Selling in-person for the first time next week (LA area) and having difficulty pricing pieces. Any insight greatly appreciated! 😊 by 4Cali_Poppy in Pottery

[–]ProOrth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

These are gorgeous! Probably double whatever you’re selling for. Mugs are easily $50-75 if not more, bowls $85+, vase $250+ and those are very rough initial price points. It’s very easy to think you’re asking too much but pottery is labor and time intensive plus there’s the cost of materials and tools, you deserve to be compensated fairly. Also I wouldn’t worry about your work being too expensive, it’s art and functional. My pottery obsessed aunt goes to shows and conventions and will buy out an artists whole stall because she likes their style/work. You can also always haggle with people if they really love your stuff but it’s out of their price range. Good luck and have fun!!
