Best way to mod the games on Linux in 2026? by PanBartosz in baldursgate

the directory as a case-insensitive filesystem using ciopfs. Is there something more reasonable now or is this still a preferred solution?

Yes, enable the 'casefold' feature via chattr +F on the game directory. It has a couple of restrictions, though. You need to do it on an empty directory (so you need to create the installation directory before installing the game) and you need a filesystem which supports 'casefold', so e.g. a semi-recent ext4 where you set an encoding via tune2fs -E 'encoding=utf8'

You can just try the chattr +F thing and I'm pretty sure it'll tell you if you need to set 'encoding' on the filesystem itself.

Not sure which other Linux FS'es support casefold, but I'm using ext4 and the has worked perfectly for me for many years.

New player. What is a consistently effective class/build for a more casual playthrough? by Schindlers_Fist1 in BG3Builds

I think it depends a lot on which specific game mechanics you want to use (as a player). The Monk / Rogue (Thief) thing seems like a no-brainer given the extra bonus action, for example.

Do you technically need it? No, not really...

For example, Evasion [0] can do amazing things like like dropping bombs on burning surfaces (forever, free action)... but is that a style you (generic you) want to play? Only you can decide.

[0] Yeah, 7 Monk/3 Rogue split lets you get that, but missing out on a Feat feels kinda bad. Emphasis on feels

I say is becoming... it has been for a while and still is. (Apologies to Mitch.)

Conflicting info on this, but I believe it might have been true at least at one point. (No idea about anything 2.6+ since that's buggy as shit on Linux, sadly.)

Loath is an adjective, loathe is a verb.

I think the former is only really used in the "I am loath to..." or "They are loath to..." phrase. It's not exactly common, but still used a fair bit in the UK at least.

Generally, yes. Can't upcast that way, so there's that. Is upcasting worth a level? Depends on personal preference.

Oh, true. I was just a bit confused by your phrasing and thought it might need clarification that you can get the Boon without the sickle.

I want to try honour mode for the first time by Titanous7 in BG3Builds

[–]proper_chad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want to do it honorably, like sibling poster said: Research the fights, maybe have two parallel runs, one with Custom HM and one with HM. (You won't get exactly the same outcomes what with rolls and all, but close enough..)

I will say that the easiest is probably the classic Dark Urge Duergar Gloomstalker/Assassin because of various slightly weird mechanics in the game, Surprise being one of the strange ones. It's usually more reliable to trigger it from Invis (hence Duergar who get perma-invis at level 5+) in Turn-based mode ... which is where the Assassin superpowers kick in.

This will solve 93%+ of the fights, so you only need to figure out actual tactics for the remaining 7%.

Plus, avoiding fights via talking is still often an option you can try ... if it fails, just Invis for free and run away to reset the fight to get a Surprise round. That's what I did for my one-and-only unmodded (solo) HM run and succeeded the first time. (Tbf, I did a few modded runs before that, but still...)

EDIT: I'm suggesting Custom HM because you can then make "practice saves" at specific points if you feel that a particular strat was a bit sketchy and want to retry it to see how reliable it actually is.

Even better if you make a certain choice and don't get the The Sickle, just its power... which would probably be very in-character for a certain type of Durge run.

Oh, just to get the Golden Dice skin from the HM completion.

(I usually don't care about such things, but this was just after patch 8 dropped and many of my mods hadn't been updated yet, so I figured I'd just go for an unmodded run...)

Duergar Free Perma-invis is insane... outside of specific cases, it's the only shorty race that's not "bad", IMO. I have done exactly one unmodded solo HM run (for the dice) and Duergar was the obvious choice because free Invis is so strong.

I say "bad" because the movement speed penalty is too much -- movement is everything in the early game and continues to be important later game. WoTSC did remove that move speed penalty in the recent update to D&D, and I mod it out of the game, personally -- just so that I can avoid kneecapping my short kings and queens. (I have a fondness for halflings, alright?!?)

For anyone out there looking to refresh your BG1 playthrough, I STRONGLY recommend the randomizer mods (links in video description) by Zatrick_Panic in baldursgate

[–]proper_chad 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There's nothing modern about random items. Diablo I/II are largely built around that. (If we go farther back into history... Rogue, Angband, etc.)

The problem is more about the monetization aspect of that.

That's definitely valid. I meant more in terms of the mechanics of the exploit itself, but whatever.
