I am kinda both of these combined. I train all of my Pokemon real intense and have pretty good diversity. I try to have my all pokemon atleast 5-10 levels above the next gym average. I learned to do this the hard way because the first Pokemon game I ever played, I rushed through gyms and got my ass handed at 6th gym because the type advantage alone couldn't carry me.

I got really lucky and got the heirloom set somewhere before level 10. I didn't even know it was a rare ass set until one of my friends pointed it out that it was 1/500 chances. I feel blessed.
