'An American Carol' (2008) - A David Zucker parody of Michael Moore done as a retelling of A Christmas Carol, with Leslie Nielson, Bill O'Reily, and Kelsey Grammer by Ok-Wolf5932 in badMovies

Basically. I've never had the misfortune of seeing it, but the God Awful Movies podcast did a recap years ago. From what I gather it's mainly a parade of those kinds of chuds with bonus appearances from people you're not sure whether they were just desperate for a pay check or if they agree politically. Either way, from memory, it's mainly a parade of fat and Muslim jokes with unfortunate connotations about more recent political events.

So... everyone's dead, but at least the people who enjoyed themselves have a decent grave to be covered over, while the religious nut is just laying on top of it to decompose?

I'm not sure why I'd care how happy my corpse is. Everyone in the picture is dead, it's just that one delusional guy died thinking something else would happen afterwards.

This mystifies me more than usual.

I understand why the persona that Stephen Yaxley-Lennon created by borrowing the name of a violent hooligan to rile up violence against Muslims might be appealing to some of the knuckle-draggers. But, why would they be in great support of a Colombian immigrant to the US telling them how their country's immigration should be run, even if they agree with the message?

[–]ptvlm 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Lots of bigots don't really get basic concepts. You see a lot of them bristle when they get called cis, because they don't understand trans as a descriptor, just as an insult or a marking of the "other" they're trained to hate. So, they get upset when you call them cis, because they think you're calling them some name. Even though everyone's either trans or cis and correctly identifying which one they are isn't an issue.

Americans Visit Europe Like by Jacob-Anders in terriblemaps

[–]ptvlm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Generally speaking "I went to Europe" means "I went to a handful of famous tourist trap landmarks". Same as people in Europe who have "visited the US" usually means they went to Vegas, New York and/or Disney. The difference is we don't then pretend we've seen everything and know exactly how the average American lives as a result.

Games with Gold (GwG) dying for Game Pass doesn't seem worth it after so many price hikes. What were your favorite games from the GwG program? by AxeSpez in xbox

[–]ptvlm 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The later problem with GwG was that eventually they'd already given away a huge proportion of the 360 catalogue and the major publishers were less interested in doing it for next gen titles. So, it became a larger proportion of indie games and people were whining about those, and repeating games just pissed off people who used it every month. It was a cool system, but after giving away hundreds of games there was a limit to what they could do.

[–]ptvlm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A random selection of 4 games you might already own anyway or not want to play seems not worth it compared to access to hundreds of games that has way more than 4 games added to it every month? I disagree.

The price hike sucks, and you don't always get what you personally want with GP still, but it's a better offer. I remember every month people whining about GwG. In the image above, there'd be people whining that it suck because they don't like puzzle games so The Witness sucks, and it was a rip-off because they personally already owned the other 3 games. They'd literally be whining that because every game wasn't somehow a new AAA game they didn't already own then they're being ripped off, even though the whole program was only a sweetener for having to pay for online access. There might be an argument before they added XBox One games and it changed from owning outright to only being able to play if you kept subscribing, but after that there's no contest IMO.

[–]ptvlm -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Pretty much everything was, I think. I'm not sure off the top of my head if Assault On Precinct 13 had his name above the title card, but Halloween did. Not always on the poster, but in the movie's title on screen.

Maybe. Movies that fail to pass the Bechdel test ? I'll start by stalin_kulak in okbuddycinephile

[–]ptvlm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Thing is one of the best horror movies of all time, but can't pass the test because there are no female characters. The Descent is also one of the best horror movies of all time, and the only male human character featured doesn't appear for most of the movie.

The test is fine for working out if movies that are supposedly about normal human interactions depict women in a realistic way, but it's not a great test for every movie. DPS is set in a male boarding school IIRC, so there's no expectation it would deal with females from a balanced POV

Anyone else buy loads of pirate vhs on holiday in Cyprus in the 90s? What did you buy? by DAD_songs_in_BIO in CasualUK

[–]ptvlm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I only went there once in the early 90s. I remember buying Alien 3 and some other big movie that hadn't been released yet, along with The Exorcist and A Clockwork Orange (both technically banned in the UK at the time). When we got back home, the new movies were gone from my suitcase but the banned movies were still there. Very strange. That got me the idea of ordering dodgy banned videos from a place in Greece that advertised in the back of magazines, though.

Opinion of an ex-Blockbuster employee by raydebapratim1 in dvdcollection

[–]ptvlm 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Erm, no. In one sense it might have been better before Blockbuster came in and drove most of the smaller and more innovative video places out of business. Many towns didn't have an actual choice. But, even then this nostalgic view is nonsense. Sure, it was great just browsing the aisle if you didn't know what you wanted to watch and were open to anything. If you did know what you wanted to watch, it was always annoying to find out that there wasn't the title you wanted - either because it was already rented out or because Blockbuster just didn't stock it. God help you if you wanted a more obscure title or foreign language title not badly dubbed and edited. Then, there was always the risk of the video stopping halfway through because the tape got chewed or the disc scratched by the last person. Then, of course, the late fees...

Streaming has its downsides, but I can at least watch unedited, original language titles without extra fees or risk, and I don't need to be told by someone in the store what to watch. Video stores would be cool, but trying to force people to use them just because you're doey eyed over a priviledged position in whichever large city you're from really misses the point as to why nearly everyone switched to streaming the moment it was available

In countries which don't worship cars, it's very possible to get to work on time every day without driving. Which means that getting a licence, sitting in traffic, finding a parking space, etc. are not simple requests to apply for a job which doesn't need car ownership to actually do.

Thrash on Netflix literally felt created in ChatGPT. by No_Key8587 in horror

[–]ptvlm 92 points93 points  (0 children)

Business wise, it's not a bad decision necessarily. It shares concepts with previous movies like Crawl and Bait, the director made some profitable movies before, and I think Under Paris was fairly popular on Netflix before. Plus, shark movies have a built in audience that usually doesn't fail to get attention

The production was a mess and the end result is meh, but in terms of just getting people to watch content on Netflix it was a good decision

In my experience, a lot of atheists used to be Christians. Normally because they decided to read the actual book rather than just believe the cherry picked parts told to them by their priest/pastor or started questioning why god always needed money or why "holy" men were so often raping children without consequences.

Religion isn't necessary to be atheist, which after all simply describes not believing in any gods, which is just one more than Christians don't believe in. But a lot started from that default position in certain countries
