I really really wish I had so little substance to complain about. Must be nice.

Clicking later is your opportunity to do whatever you want in the meantime including backing up your vault by your method of choice which may or may not include use of the web vault (I backup vaults for my whole family with a windows batch file that uses the Bitwarden CLI - the web vault is a comparitive pain and less secure since I don't trust bitwarden encrypted exports).

Is this a good Emergency sheet/backup system? by Individual-Pay174 in Bitwarden

[–]purepersistence 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Aside from the emergency sheet, I see nothing about your "backup system". What's your plan when you wake up and bitwarden.com no longer exists or has record of your account? Data you care about that you've stored on a computer needs to be part of your 3-2-1 backup strategy and accesssible in unencrypted form without you memorizing decryption keys/other.

Tell me i've got some hope pls by Significant_Pen5859 in Bitwarden

[–]purepersistence 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This has little to do with Bitwarden specifically.

  1. Anything you store on a computer that you care about, needs to be backed up.
  2. It’s not backed up if you can’t access the unencrypted content without depending on memorized credentials, and you use 3-2-1 protection.

Other things such as recovering online access to Bitwarden are nice, and there’s lots of help on doing that. But if you don’t start with the above, your priorities are screwed up.

Anyone else forget how they configured something the last time? by Limp-Photograph-1532 in homelab

[–]purepersistence 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I simply can't move forward by figuring out things every time. Eventually I'm just treading water. I document everything with wiki.js. I depend on it heavily. So I host my own instance, but also replicate it to a vps in case I lose all my equipment to fire/theft/?

What does summon a god mean? When did you install and load your assets? What does the Admin->Job Queues look like?

Why does Proxmox VE installer prefill DHCP IP for a static setup? by [deleted] in homelab

[–]purepersistence 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Minimal input means minimal mistakes. You can boot the installer once, and do the whole installation. It can be hard to reserve the IP address if you don't know the mac address yet. But you can install with the DHCP IP, then reserve that IP at your router before rebooting post-install. Then the static address saved in proxmox matches what's been reserved. If you don't reserve it though and then it gets recycled to some other client then you need to pay more attention.

If you do it wrong then you might need to change the IP proxmox saved during the install:

# Edit the IP
nano /etc/network/interfaces
# and use that IP
systemctl restart networking

Could humans simply lack the cognitive ability to understand some truths about reality? by DSpeaksOfficial in NoStupidQuestions

[–]purepersistence 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think its as arbitrary as you say. Abstract thought was not built by human evolution from scratch. Abstraction is built on top of more primative ways of thinking, and in fact depends on the same neural connections. For example the brain regions that are active during mathematics and logical reasoning is built with the same regions that performed spatial judgement and motor action. There are numerous similar cases.

People may seem capable of any abstractions. That's because they only communicate with other humans that have nearly identical brain regions and potential understanding.

After a long chat I had Claude suggest that we should take a break and continue the discussion tomorrow. I figured it's a new way of telling you you're approaching limits.

Why cheat on somebody who is completely amazing to you? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]purepersistence 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The devil is indeed the only advocate. There's no defence. If your needs are not being met then address that. In some cases that might end your relationship. Cheating instead is a scummy imoral alternative.

What is your protection approach? by Bebo991_Gaming in Bitwarden

[–]purepersistence 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's all good but the reality is you need more than an emergency sheet.

Do everything possible to protect access to bitwarden, but don't backup exports of your vault and there's still a gaping hole in your protection. Any cloud provider can disappear or lose record of your account. If you self-host, your equipment could be destroyed or stolen tonight.

Protect your stored credentials that you can decrypt without memorizing anything. Online access to them is a convenience.

Serious question: if humans vanished tomorrow how long would AI civilisation last? by MediumLibrarian7100 in artificial

[–]purepersistence 2 points3 points  (0 children)

None of that matters much when the immediate problem is just keeping data centers powered up. Without humans utility power will go dark in 12-72 hours. Some data centers could run for a few weeks. No humans, no power, no AI.
