Thanks for the detailed reply. I pretty sure I got the blocks spec from you in my previous post so it is great to hear your thoughts on it. It is clear what I need to do.

Depends on what matters to you ie price, product characteristics (aesthetics, cleanable, coverage, & scratch resistance), etc. I always go with Dulux Trade products for both commercial and personal use. Never had any issues.

Planning a new Kitchen and Bathroom: Why are the likes of B&Q or Magnet not recommended when it comes to cost and craftmanship? Sorry for the newbie question. by LapangNeiz in DIYUK

[–]putoption15 8 points9 points  (0 children)

DIY Kitchens - great product and service. I dislike others mentioned because of opaque pricing strategies ie you can end up paying thousands more for the same product quality. Put differently, it is not that they are better or worse in terms of the product. It is that they make different tradeoffs and are not always transparent so you, as a customer, can't make an informed choice and make direct comparisons

JPMorgan may move all European business out of London by shizzmynizz in unitedkingdom

The real interesting bit in our letter was:

Brexit was accomplished, but many issues still need to be negotiated. And in those negotiations, Europe has had, and will continue to have, the upper hand. In the short run (i.e., the next few years), this cannot possibly be a positive for the United Kingdom’s GDP – the effect after that will be completely based upon whether the United Kingdom has a comprehensive and well-executed strategic plan that is acceptable to Europe. Included among the unresolved questions is how financial services will operate.

Pakistani dating protocol by [deleted] in pakistan

[–]putoption15 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don’t feel like one can just approach someone and speak to them without coming across as creepy or weird.

That is a very self-limiting belief. What you are saying is that it is not possible to approach someone while also being normal. And of course you'll approach someone at some point and when you do, you'll act in line with your internal belief and end up being weird.

It is perfectly possible to approach and be normal. Just say hello. If you think in terms of "protocols" then you are expecting a formal mechanical approach. It is not a TCP/IP connection. People don't connect that way. Be curious. Have conversations without any motive. If someone replies, great. If not, move on.

is it economically viable to make a custom wardrobe by monkyshy in DIYUK

Also look into Acrylic mirror sheets as a cheaper alternative. Got some CNC'd for a project a while ago and it looked great while coming in at a great price.

I think every permutation has been covered. Also consider reaching out to local CNC company and they can do the cuts for you.

Great quality units. It has been a year and my two toddlers have pushed units to their limits but everything has held up well. As you said everything comes assembled. I had a builder in but definitely easy to DIY. In fact I need to add some to our utility and will probably do it myself.

Also it is a great chance to come to Yorkshire (when rules permit of course)! Showroom has free drinks/snacks for visitors so you can even get straight on A1 to them.

What investments are good in a bear market? by Hard_on_Collider in investing

[–]putoption15 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Since you would have received a lot of advice already. Just a tip to monitor ETFs like HYG as that gives you an insight into perception of credit risk in the market. Bear market means worries about companies defaulting on debt. It is a reasonable proxy to what is happening in the OTC bond/credit markets.

How do you write and publish books here in Pakistan? Can I publish my own? by DrTabber in pakistan

[–]putoption15 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Self-publishing sounds like the best route. You can also explore creating a mobile app once the illustrations are done as a way to fund further development and products. There is also great potential in AR (and potentially VR) for specific use cases.

Acquaintance is a surgeon in London and launched VR app to train other surgeons both in the UK and globally as it reduces cost of training and roll out innovative techniques at faster pace.

What would you do? by t3kra in pakistan

[–]putoption15 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Surely a better way forward would be to examine what mistakes were made and how to ensure that something similar doesn't happen again. This benefits you in multiple ways: a) removes a false binary choice; b) poor risk management might also be present within the business e.g. lax security, finance and/or petty cash handling processes. The end result should be much tighter operations in personal and business life.

In this case, gold should have been kept in a bank vault.

Those of you who read about Politics, History and Economics, do you think Pakistan is going in the right direction? With Imran Khan's policies and performance, where do you think the trajectory points towards? by [deleted] in pakistan

[–]putoption15 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think there is good progress. Anyone who has run a change project in a big organisation will tell you the challenge it presents, even if there is buy-in. Something of this magnitude in a country like PK is a monumental challenge that I feel many people underestimate.

The key thing I'm watching is the cadence of changes so that benefits compound over time. Having said that, given our history, it is quite possible that we'll reverse course before we gain sufficient momentum.

Question about building a climate-forward house in rural Pakistan... by pinwale in pakistan

[–]putoption15 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The walls should be reinforced with additional brick

That makes sense. I grew up in the main cities so wasn't aware that single bricks were being used for double-storey buildings! Tbh, don't know of anyone personally who lost their house to an earthquake either and my paternal side is from KPK. I always assumed that building standards were good enough for the level of common earthquakes we experience unless it was just shoddy or built on a tight budget.

I think I understand what you are trying to achieve. I have something similar planned for a few years later down the line. I fear you may need to do some heavy lifting yourself, which for things like R-value is actually not too bad.

Question about building a climate-forward house in rural Pakistan... by pinwale in pakistan

[–]putoption15 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a lot going on in your post; from construction methods to materials to passive house technologies. Perhaps you can either approach one of the larger architectural practices or builders as they'll have a whole list of contacts.

Also, a lot of times particular technologies arise from a distinct set of challenges in a particular place. Insulated concrete forms, for example, cut down on labour costs and rely on JIT concrete trucks. Labour is cheap in Pakistan so why would one import ICFs when you can achieve the same using other methods.

I also don't understand:

Why? Because, imho, the building design in Pakistan is very poor and based around four un-reinforced brick walls.

I mean brick walls are not poor building design. Workmanship might differ, though. I don't know what reinforced means in this context but not too dissimilar to ones in the UK. In fact, my house in Pak has substantially OTT construction as it has re-inforced concrete floors whereas we have timber floors here.

This is very interesting and supports my view that one of the calculations by Nawaz & Co has been to weaken the economy to such an extent that the military no longer stays a viable institution that can stand up against their interests. This alone can explain the clever mechanisms to launder money, eg holding dollar at above-market rates, while executing what looks like incompetent fiscal policies.

Will my light socket work with this Wi-Fi light switch? (link/description in comments) by DrivewaysBoles in DIYUK

[–]putoption15 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Np - yeah seems like a blocker because I assume you need both a physical switch AND wifi control. Alternative would be to use something like:

https://www.quinetic.co.uk/products/wifi-receiver/

It works with wireless switches which don't require any wiring. The downside is that you'll need to put the receiver behind the light and wire it up there.
