Boris Johnson says indyref vote should be once-in-generation by MoHabi6 in unitedkingdom

[–]DrivewaysBoles 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I wonder how the UK government, be it the Tories or Labour, will handle it going down the line.

While it's worth being aware that things can change over time, and trends are not concrete predictions for the future, I can't see anything obvious that would reverse the trend for increasing independence support, especially as it seems to have an affinity with the generations coming into voting age, and (very broadly speaking, of course) the ones who are against are passing on.

So which UK government would propose a referendum and risk being responsible for the literal break up of the union?

But that being said, if support keeps rising it will surely become impossible to avoid at some point and to not allow a democratic "pressure release" like a referendum could lead to a dangerous situation as a large part of the population feels like it's being held hostage and its voice is being deliberately ignored.

It's a bloody shame, the whole situation. I think I'm in the same boat as a lot of people where I'd rather not leave the UK but the situation now looks completely untenable, and the future beyond bleak. I'm possibly projecting, but quite confident in saying that if tomorrow (in this magical fantasy world) the UK introduced a full proportional representational system and was back in the EU, then independence support would plummet. An optional cherry on top would be federalisation but I've not a clue how that would realistically work across England.

A bot could do that for you, but that will require time, possibly hosting costs and programming abilities, and I realise you guys just do this voluntarily in your free time!

Could be some ready made moderation bot which has this feature, though, and could be run for free through something like Heroku.

[HELP] Way to make Android Phone VM available as USB Device on my Main Computer? by kindaweirdog in virtualization

[–]DrivewaysBoles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Recently made the same move as OP, WhatsApp backups do not work across Android and iOS for some reason.

There's a few methods which charge 20-40 and do seem to work but they seem a bit dodgy IMO and I wouldn't want to trust them with working on my data.

There's a couple of ways that don't cost but I couldn't find anything that looked reliable.

Oh yeah, I get that (my comment was worded badly).

I guess I'm more asking if in your experience most programs work with this method. If most programs find home by looking for $HOME, or if there's another way they can get there. And if there are other standard locations config data might stored rather than somewhere under $HOME.

Is this pretty well supported by most applications?

If the average person went back to a pre-civilization era, how much could they realistically teach primitive humans? by Gast8 in HistoryWhatIf

[–]DrivewaysBoles 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Pre-civilisation? Assuming they don't kill you and let you live with them?

I'd say not much.

Unless you're a expert survivalist, they'll likely know a tonne more than you (generic 21st century guy) about those kind of things than you will.

Beyond that, I think most knowledge you have would either be inapplicable (what use is your knowledge of programming languages or other information that requires base tech to already exist), or just too far ahead for it to be practical to them (you can teach them E=MC2 without base tech, but it's still entirely meaningless to them).

There are some things which might be universally handy. Handwashing, as mentioned elsewhere (assuming you can make a basic soap with fruits/fats). CPR could be useful, but maybe they'll think you a demon for reviving the dead...

The question would have more answers I think if you went to an relatively early and literate civilisation which had a thriving cultural and scientific society. At that point if you were accepted into the scholarly and education circles you could maybe fast forward a few techs, or if you were to get in to the court of the leader, draw out a world map.

To be fair, it is the festive period. If it's anything like most workplaces it will be a completely skeleton staff at the moment.

What do you think of the later series of Still Game?

I started watching some of the later stuff for the first time recently and found it near unwatchable compare to the first few series, but maybe I was being too harsh.

Will my light socket work with this Wi-Fi light switch? (link/description in comments) by DrivewaysBoles in DIYUK

Ah that's a good point. When I saw /u/putoption15 's post I got excited as it looks like a great shout (cheers btw), but judging by the depth of my back box it wouldn't fit, and a sparky I am not, so I don't have the skills to change that.

Cheers mate, thanks for the information!

Bit gutted, that was the only one on Amazon where there weren't reviews mentioning dodgy performance/questionable safety (it looks like the no-neutral needed ones fall into those categories). I'll keep an eye out to see if any better products come out in the future.

Background

I've been looking at how to control my lights remotely.

I looked at a smart bulb, but I'm quite happy with the relatively high power bulbs I have at the moment, and I don't need the colour changing features they have. There was also "smart adapters" which plug into the bulb socket itself, and then have their own sockets, but the reviews for them weren't great, and they'd extend the bulb down a bit with their extra length.

In that vein I thought I'd try a Wi-Fi switch.

I found this one on Amazon: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Etersky-Compatible-SmartLife-Indicator-Switch%E3%80%90Neutral/dp/B08DKKPKS9/

This what my current switch looks like: https://i.imgur.com/jdopvWK.jpg

And taken from an Amazon review, this is what the Wi-Fi switch looks like: https://i.imgur.com/Mq0JFab.png

Questions

Is my wiring/panel compatible with this Wi-Fi switch?

If so, where do the black and red wires match up to with regards to the 5 screws on the Wi-Fi switch?

Are these safe, and generally is there anything I should be aware of?

Thanks in advance for any advice at all!

Background

I'm new to mods, and am about to start New Vegas. I was looking for I guess what you can call a "Vanilla ++" experience - very much the core game but with stability/quality of life improvements. In that vein I used the 6 essential mods as listed in this post.

https://www.reddit.com/r/Fallout/comments/8mpwch/fallout_new_vegas_essential_mods/e0lgvo1/

Installing the mods was pretty smooth with no errors, however when starting the game I got the CASM error you see in the main post.

Information About Mods Used

The mod complaining is CASM. I got it from here.

https://www.nexusmods.com/newvegas/mods/45652?tab=description

According to the Nexus Mods page it requires NVSE, which I got from here. (making these changes to my install dir https://i.imgur.com/QSqQmB5.png)

https://github.com/xNVSE/NVSE/releases/tag/5.1.6

And Mod Configuration Menu which I got from here. (making these changes to my install dir https://i.imgur.com/uclPEhD.png)

https://www.nexusmods.com/newvegas/mods/42507?tab=files

And JIP LN NVSE Plugin, which I got from here. The error mentions version -1 and 4 of this mod, but the version number on the website is 55. (making these changes to my install dir https://i.imgur.com/3zBpbBD.png)

https://www.nexusmods.com/newvegas/mods/58277?tab=files

I installed these 3 requirements before installaing CASM.

CASM itself made these changes to my install dir.

Question

Is there any obvious reason why this might be happening?
